Red Cross Year In Review At Carroll County Chapter

The Carroll County American Red Cross held its annual meeting at the Savanna library. Miss Mabel Greve led the session while chairmen reported on 2811 articles for the Camp and Hospital Council and 105 for the Veterans Hospital. Production totals included 1581 garments and 303 knitted items. The War Fund quota was met with 16036.91 dollars. Officers re-elected and Home Service efforts noted as priorities.

Chicago Junior Market Hog Show Offers 75 Prizes

Few Owners Sign Up for Bang's Disease Testing

About 100 dairy herd owners in Carroll county signed up for the Bang's disease testing program. Tests will be offered with TB testing by state veterinarians if enough owners register. Signups occurred in early July with low turnout, but owners may still enroll at the Farm Bureau office township supervisors or Farm Bureau directors. If 50 percent or more register, the Bang's test will be free.

Harvest boost for sweet clover seed under AAA plan

County AAA chairman Herman Daehler announces no limit on acres for sweet clover seed payments at 3.50 per acre to boost seed production. The change aims to secure legume and grass seeds amid poor harvests, with other approved crops listed and May June Dairy Feed Payments forms being mailed. Milking machines and grain elevators will no longer be rationed effective July 20, and a revised machinery list is issued with permits for July 10–15.

Soldier Drowns in Mississippi River Near Savanna

Pvt. Lee H. Delaney, a Negro soldier traveling on a troop train, drowned while wading in eight feet of water near the Mississippi River shore at Savanna Illinois. He disappeared after undressing and attempting to swim. body recovered after two hours by workers with a diving helmet. An inquest ruled accidental drowning. Delaney’s mother in Memphis was notified.

Mrs Edwin Keim of Mt Carroll was elected president of the Corral County Federation of Woman clubs at a county meeting held in the Keim home. She succeeds Mrs Eugene Murray of Thomson. Other officers named for the year are vice president Mrs C Sumner Darrow of Savanna and secretary treasurer Mrs J W Stickell of Chadwick. Trucks Wrecked In An Accident Near Mt. Carroll

James Ritenour of Mt Carroll suffered minor injuries when his rendering truck collided with a gasoline tanker driven by M G Handel two miles north of Mt Carroll on Route 78 about 3 p m on July 13. The rendering truck overturned after hitting a cement culvert and a dead cow was discarded on the pavement. Handel escaped injury and his truck was damaged.

Cattle From Carroll County Top Chicago Market Prices

Two Carroll county herds were among Chicago Stock Yards top sellers last week. Elmer Buffington's Milledgeville shipment consisted of 24 head at 1122 pounds selling at 17.15 dollars per cwt, while Ralph A. Picking of Shannon sent 20 head averaging 1262 pounds at 17.10 dollars per cwt. The Picking cattle topped the day's prices and were bought for eastern shipment.

First Lieutenant Russell Carson Receives Oak Leaf Cluster

First Lieut Russell Carson son of Mr and Mrs Robert Carson of Woodland township has been awarded an Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of an additional air medal. The award is announced by Lieut Gen Millard F Harmon commanding U S Army Air Forces in the South Pacific. Carson served as pilot from April 14 to May 9 1944 with the 15th AAF on missions for which the award was given.

County tops fifth war loan quota short one bonds

State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports June declines in Illinois old age pension payments and ADC aid to dependent children. Pensions totaled 4,981 with a statewide drop of over 70,000. ADC payments were 703,168 down nearly 8,000. Carroll and Whiteside counties show smaller totals for pensions and ADC beneficiaries.

Final plans for Carroll County Farm Bureau picnic

The Farm Bureau board of directors will meet Thursday evening July 27 at 8 p m in Mt Carroll to finalize arrangements for the annual picnic and 4 H roundup. Committees for the event will be chosen. The picnic is set for Friday Aug 25 in Old Mill park Savanna with livestock judging in the morning a basket dinner at noon and an afternoon program including a talk music readings a 4 H chess revue and a softball game.

Sheriff Probes Thefts Of Two Cars Last Week

Sheriff Eber Shepherd investigated the theft of two automobiles last Thursday night. A Lanark resident reported a car taken and abandoned at the Isadore Saidel home in Mt. Carroll, then Saidel’s car was used by the thief and found later in Lanark. Theodore Colehour described two men attempting to steal his truck at about 2 30 a m before they fled in a nearby car.

Italians Join Savanna Ordnance Depot Labor Force

Arrival of 400 Italian service unit troops to aid ammunition and war supplies production at the Savanna ordnance depot was announced by Col. Max A. Brackett. He stressed ongoing labor shortages and opened jobs to anyone 16 and older. The Italians will be housed in depot barracks. theater of war unspecified.

Savanna Woman Hurt In Ridge Road Crash

Mrs Henry Moltman of Savanna sustained a fractured rib and dislocated kneecap when her car veered after a front tire blew out on Ridge Road about four miles north of Savanna. Semi conscious, she was found by nearby farmers and taken to Savanna hospital.

Savanna Sailor Receives Navy Medal for Anzio Action

Mo. MM2c Harry K. Clark 19 earned the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism during the Anzio Nettuno landings on February 7 1944. The citation notes his action in fighting a fire and removing injured aboard a landing craft at a harbor dock after a bomb hit.
