New Ruling Tightens Job Change Rules in War Effort

Carroll county cattle led the week’s activity at the Chicago Stock Yards. Paul Diffenderfer shipped 57 head of 1112 lb steers at 17.15 per cwt without sorting, while Frank Collinson presented 103 head of Aberdeen Angus heifers averaging 818 lb, topping light heifers at 17.00 per cwt. A New Year high price also emerged with Chicago trading up to 17.75 per cwt, the highest since April 1943 and July levels in 25 years.

Two Drownings in Mississippi River Near Savanna
Two men drowned in the Mississippi River near Savanna on Tuesday evening about two hours apart. Albert Kohn, 27, of Sabula Iowa, died while swimming near Evergreen cemetery north of Sabula. Glen Wheeler, 50, of Savanna, drowned when a boat overturned near the Savanna Sabula bridge. Wheeler’s body was not recovered by Tuesday night. Kohn’s body was recovered within an hour. Wheeler, a guard at the Savanna ordnance depot, lived at the Radke hotel in Savanna.
