Isabelle Donnelly Atkinson, born August 31, 1916 in Milledgeville, died at her Clinton Iowa home on Saturday. Her husband Glenn W. Atkinson survives along with her parents James E. Donnelly and Ted Goettsch, a sister Mrs. Earl Lee, and other relatives. An autopsy was planned per coroner's note. cause of death was not disclosed.
Mr and Mrs Glen Bower entertained Friday at a scrambled supper honoring their son Gerald on his third birthday. Certificates for scholarships in Illinois normal colleges were sent to seven 1946 Carroll County high school graduates. Scholarships go to the top ranking graduate who intends to teach in Illinois. Recipients include Ted Strauch Chadwick Vivjean Ritenour Milledgeville Lila Curley Thomson Irene Miller Lanark Carol Wirtjes Shannon Jean Mulder penal Doris Schneider Mt Carroll.
Don Richter of Carroll County is invited to attend the first annual Flying Farmers Field Day at Purdue University West Lafayette Indiana on July 29. The event expects 6000 to 10000 attendees with 400 personal planes and displays from sixteen manufacturers.
Mrs Glen Hartman and Mrs Lawrence Doden co hosted a shower at the Hartman home in honor of Mrs Richard Adolph. Court whist produced high prize for Mrs Charles Heffelfinger and low for Mrs Phillip Kradle. Many gifts and refreshments were served by the hostesses with a long list of attendees including Mesdames Queckboerner Barnhart Smith Adolph Meyers Harter Queckboerner Miller Kradle George Doden Handel Clevidence and Misses Doden Olson.
Mrs Wm Kruse and Ralph Frederick were honored Sunday at the Frederick home near Loran. A picnic dinner followed with many guests from Freeport Pearl City Polo Orangeville Mt Carroll and Mt Carroll area joining the hosts Mr and Mrs John Frederick and Ralph Frederick.
Savanna Garment Factory installed fifteen new electric sewing machines last week, bringing total machines to seventy. Manager Paul V. Schember notes twenty five women are employed now and more workers are needed to meet demand on cotton dress sewing led by forelady Mrs. Frank Vetricek of Savanna.
A Democratic state committee group led by State Chairman George D. Kells met Carroll County candidates and workers in Old Mill Park Savanna. The nine day downstate tour includes 15 districts with attendees signaling strong Democratic turnout this fall. Participants include C. H. Engle Sam Keys Paul Powell Blanche Fritz W. J. Stanton and Emily Taft Douglas to join later.
Owen M. Wiens 35 died suddenly of a heart attack at 8 a m Friday in his home on the farm where he lived near Sterling Illinois He had been ill for some time Surviving are his widow two children Norma and Lonnie his father Frank Wiens of Sterling three brothers Hallie Guy and Junior and three sisters Gene Holland Nina and Carroll The mother died Apr 12 1946 Funeral services were arranged at Sterling funeral home born Dec 29 1910 in Glen Elder Kansas moved to Illinois about 1919
James W. Scarborough, 81, of Miles City Montana died at 10 30 a m Thursday July 18 at Savanna City hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks He fell ill with pneumonia while visiting his brother in Sabula and later suffered a stroke Funeral services were held in Sabula and burial was in Sterling Iowa
Carroll county girls 4-H clubs host an achievement demonstration and exhibit on Wednesday July 31 at Farm Bureau hall Mt Carroll. Exhibits judging starts at 10 AM followed by an afternoon program and demonstration. Barbara Herlin Lee county home adviser will judge.
The Swartz estate residence in Chadwick sold at auction Saturday for 4575 dollars. Fred Zemke was the purchaser. Don Brand of Downers Grove spent the weekend at the Ed Mest home. John Mest of Riverview visited Chadwick on Saturday. John Bierman and Carl H. Kness drove to Janesville Wisconsin on business Friday.
Mr and Mrs Ned Spencer opened a general store in Argo after relocating from Chadwick where Spencer worked at Handel Implement Store. The oat harvest is finished and threshing begins. Mrs Clyde Carpenter visited Spencer Hendersons and Myrtle Colehour is critically ill. Rev Paul Van Zee to enter Mayo Clinic Rochester this week. Sunday July 20 he will conduct services here.
Fair Haven Store and Locker Plant owned by Helen and Harold Adair completed a new facility with 168 lockers and a sharp freez e unit begun July 22. A modern processing room now bustling as lockers fill. Original 1939 locker plant started in Carroll County. total lockers now 251 with two sharp freeze units. Plans include lard rendering curing smoking slaughtering services once materials and labor permit.
Orville W Tempel 30 a native of Shannon and World War II veteran died July 17 at St Francis hospital Freeport He was born September 7 1915 at Shannon and married to Beryl Griffin in 1941 Funeral services were Saturday at Trinity Evangelical church Freeport with Rev Grant V Graver presiding Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery Survived by his parents his widow a son Lyle two brothers and two sisters
Betsey Marie Ross of Stockton and William Rohner, son of Ida Tuttle of French Camp, married June 15 at the Putnam home in Stockton with Rev. Carl F. Truex officiating. Attendants were Theodore Salisbury and the couple now reside at 2057 East Myrtle Street. Ross is Mount Carroll high school graduate and former Marine. Elma B Schroeppel of Mt. Carroll and Walton Schroepel wed at 7 am in Mt. Carroll. they plan to live in Glenview after a Wisconsin Dells trip. Schroepel discharged from navy after four years and works in Chicago.
About 40 Milwaukee freight cars piled into a ditch near the United Gypsum plant at Cordova after a broken wheel caused a derailment on a 60 foot bridge. The wreck halted road traffic for several days while wreckers worked and trains were rerouted via Savanna and the Iowa side. Hundreds visited the scene as officials predicted repairs by week’s end. Mr and Mrs Glen Kendell of Ashton and Bert Robinson left Tuesday to visit in Iowa.
Clear skies and warm weather last week sped the small grain harvest in the area. By Monday morning several threshing rings were in operation, though outfits appear fewer than in past years as many farmers are combining. Some follow with pickup balers to save the straw.
Miss Jane Kier daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Kier Morrison marries Warren P Slocum son of Mr and Mrs L B Slocum Morrison in a candlelight service at First Presbyterian church. Rev C Harrison Backer officiates before 150 relatives and friends. After a reception for 100, the couple plans to reside in Unionville.
Sinnissippi District of the Illinois Welfare Association will hold a meeting on August 1, 1946 at the Sycamore Memorial Community Center in Sycamore Illinois. Registration starts at 9 30 a m with morning noon and afternoon sessions. The program includes discussions on Community Planning Councils Youth Projects and a luncheon with speaker Dr Charles E Howell and an explanation of the Peoria plan of operation. A panel of area workers will share experiences and discussed questions. Reservations for luncheon should be mailed to Mrs Ann Hemenway. Martha Morse is Sinnissippi District president.
Lavern Landorf formerly of Savannah is held in Portsmouth Ohio on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses. He is wanted in Whiteside county for passing six bad checks from five to twenty dollars and in Lee Carroll counties and Wisconsin for similar offenses.
Twelfth annual Daehler clan reunion set for Sunday at Old Mill park in Savanna. Charles Lew of Chadwick serves as president with Della Nesbitt of Waterloo vice president and Mrs. Melvin Straub of Chadwick secretary treasurer. Oscar and Albert Daehler lead tables while Herman Daehler Carl Haag and Donald Smith handle the ice cream.
Mrs H F Weber and H L Spearman attended the funeral for Charles Binder 77 husband of Allie McInery. Rites were held at a Rock Island funeral home and burial took place there. Howard Brett and wife left for a week visit with relatives near Elgin and Chicago.
Miss Sally Abrams 15 of Mt Carroll was fined 25 dollars and 11 dollars costs after pleading guilty to driving without a state license. The hearing was by Justice Frank Schroieppel. She borrowed a car from William Wilson, struck a parked vehicle owned by Orville Rogers, and left the scene. Witnesses followed, a warrant was issued, and she paid 95 dollars for repairs with 65 more estimated.
County clerk records show recent licenses granted to Kenneth E. Kniss and June B. Martin of Lanark along with several other couples from Mt. Carroll Chicago Thomson Savanna and Savanna. Circuit Clerk Gordon B. Smith and buildings committee members inspected photostat equipment in Dixon as the county considers purchasing for the clerk’s office. Honorable discharges from military service filed include several from Savanna Potosi Thomson Milledgeville and other nearby locales.

The June DHIA list highlights Harry Tallman’s Lucky Maxine atop the top cows with 2555 lbs milk and 94.2 lbs fat. Holland and Pratt lead the 16 Guernsey Holstein herd with 1139 lbs milk and 48.6 lbs fat, while John K. Morris herd averages 1007 lbs milk and 43.5 lbs fat across 26 animals.
Mrs. Elsie Frank of Mt. Carroll sues Willard Evans in Whiteside County Circuit Court for 510,000 claiming injuries from a February crash on Route 30 two miles east of Morrison. She alleges a stalled car in snow impaired visibility and Evans drove too fast with an obstructed view.
Farmers report first calf born via artificial insemination by Drs Olson and Moret at Morrison area. Calf a purebred Holstein, born to Clarence Siefken's cow four miles north of Morrison, marking a milestone in Midwest dairy practice after eastern adoption.
