Ned Spencer former clerk at Handel Traplement Store Chadwick has purchased the grocery business long operated by the late Fred Smith in Argo Fa and rented the store building. He plans to reopen by the latter part of this week and move his family upstairs once renovations are complete. He announced the opening date as Saturday July 20.
Miss Georgia F Lingle daughter of Mrs W C Beaton of Savanna married Robert E Notz son of Mrs Ern est Johnson of Savanna and Emil Notz of LaCrosse Wis at 6 pm Friday July 12 in the Beaton home Savanna The Rev E Cedric Pope Methodist pastor officiated Attendants were Miss Geraldine Dickman and William Notz A wedding dinner and reception for over 100 followed The couple will reside in the Johnson home for now
James Canavan, an 80 year old Savanna World War II veteran, pleaded guilty to tampering with a state police car on Main Street. He admitted letting air out of a tire and was fined 50 dollars plus costs. He also faced a later charge of disorderly conduct and assault with a 25 dollar penalty and costs. The witnesses included Sgt Herbert Krahn and Fred Thrasher.
H S Heilman district rent executive notifies Peoria landlords and tenants that evictions will be governed by Local Law and that notices must comply with Illinois law until Congress enacts new rent control. He advises consulting an attorney if rights are in doubt.
Service Officer Lafe A. Sanders in Mt. Carroll Illinois will aid veterans in tracing overdue subsistence payments. Eligible veterans on the job training or in school under the GI Bill receive first subsistence allowance 60 days after their eligibility certificate is endorsed and returned by the employer trainer to the Chicago Veterans Administration. Bring all letters from the VA and provide the date the eligibility letter was forwarded by the employer.
Chadwick residents welcomed a number of guests at a Sunday dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Baker. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Halfman and family of Thomson, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hall of Savanna, and Mr. and Mrs. Dewight Wagoner of Rochelle.
Gov Green defends selecting Savanna and Mt Vernon for new tuberculosis sanitariums as fair impartial. He says commission studied multiple sites and chose Savanna and Mt Vernon for favorable location and water supply while serving the largest area. State Rep Stransky says sites chosen on merit after tours of prospective communities.

The Secretary of the Navy announces current base pay scales for enlisted ranks led by Chief Petty Officer at 165 dollars and Petty Officer 1st Class at 185. Total monthly income also includes allowances and five percent increases for each three years of service.

Two Chadwick Illinois teachers join 5,000 students in the University of Illinois summer session. Hugh F Senneff, a Milledgeville high school teacher last year, will return in fall and pursues agricultural education. Harley Whitney Foster, Hooppole high principal, will return in fall and is working on a master’s degree in education.

Frances Shimer college will offer athletic facilities to Mt. Carroll residents and interested adults. A supervised social recreation period runs July 22 to Sept 1 with Friday parties at the college grill. Tennis volleyball and softball free. golf courses may incur a small daily fee. Swimming pool out for repairs this summer. expected to reopen next year. Community ministers assist, aiming for an annual program.

Winners listed include Viola Schultz Evelyn Larson and D Moothart in multiple events such as rolling pin throw nail driving and 100 yard dash. District meet and state camp dates announced with state camp in Bloomington July 18 24.
Mrs. Lloyd Handel and Gary and Mrs. Harlen Handel with children are staying several days at the Handel Cottage in Riverview. Several local families visited, dined, or hosted gatherings at cottages and homes including the Pines State Park, the Herman Aude home, and the Clyde Morden residence near Sterling.
Ben St. Clair 32 of Savanna suffered crushing abdominal injuries when he was caught between a forklift and a truck at the Savanna ordnance depot. He was taken to Savanna city hospital where officials said his condition was not believed serious. He is foreman in the ammunition storage area and son of Mrs. George I. Clove of Chadwick. St. Clair served in Europe in World War II and was discharged about six months ago.
At an auction sale in Mt. Carroll the Fred Homedew estate five room house sold for 6250 to James Williamson who will move to town after selling the farm north of Mt. Carroll. A 1938 automobile brought 810, a 1934 electric refrigerator 177.50, a ten year old 3 burner electric stove 75, and a 1954 coupe 271 with other items selling high.
Pouring of cement for the foundation walls of the John trailer factory to be erected just west of the Y at the junction of Routes 80 and 52 at Savanna was started last week. The Savanna Construction company is doing the work.
The 17th annual Kness reunion will be held Sunday July 21 at Lawrence park Sterling with Ed Kness of Chadwick as president and Mrs Monroe Fossett of Milledgeville as secretary. The Doden family reunion meets Sunday at Waterworks park Morrison led by George Doden of Sterling and secretary Mrs Clifton Hartman. The East Paul reunion takes place Sunday July 21 at Old Mill park Savanna led by Geo Bast of Chadwick president and Mrs Myron Scott of Brookville secretary-treasurer.
Mrs. Minnie Carter Lamb of Illinois, a Poled Hereford breeder, earned first prize a form of a check from Hereford Journal United War Board and leading farm groups for wartime service. She will judge at the 4-H club Round-up on Labor Day in Freeport and spoke by radio on women’s wartime roles from Rockford. A 11 month old Polled Hereford from Lambs was grand champion at a Merced show, selling for 6900 dollars.
Members of the 13th district Woman's clubs will hold a picnic at White Pines state park today. Dinner is set for 1 p.m. CDT, and each guest should bring a dish to pass a drink and her own table service.

Rep. Franklin A. Stransky reports a site has been selected for a lodge at Mississippi Palisades State Park north of Savanna. Groundwork and road building will begin soon with funds from the last Illinois legislature and Illinois post war planning grants. The lounge and dining lodge with cabins is favored for privacy and economy, with park officials and engineers inspecting multiple sites and aiming to expand as funds allow.
Mrs Ernest Rathje has been hired as teacher for seventh and eighth grades at Chestnut Park school Savanna completing the faculty for the coming year Other teachers include Hazel Heinze principal Marie Krahn Paul Becker Jr and Bernard Crist The school term opens Tuesday September 3.
In Chadwick area a collision damaged two cars operated by Charles Shuman and Frank Kness. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries. Kness's car struck Shuman's on the left side crushing front and rear doors. Shuman suffered a bruised side from an arm rest jammed against his ribs.
WWII veterans honorably discharged and Illinois residents at entry may receive scholarships to any state normal university teachers college or University of Illinois. Law approved May 1 1945 under Illinois revised statutes. Non residents who were students at the University or normal schools may complete their studies without tuition. Illinois Service Officer Lafe A Sanders cites benefits for shorter service periods and mentions additional scholarships for children of veterans who died in service plus $150 yearly education allowance from ages 16 to 22 if in school.
