Second session of Carroll county's air raid warden school of instruction will be held tomorrow night July 24 at 8 p m in the supervisors room of the courthouse in Mt. Carroll Eber Shepherd chief air raid warden for the county leads the sessions about 50 attended the first session in Mt Carroll He stressed civilian defense readiness noting vital defense areas Savanna Rock Island arsenal and a new plant in Lee county are nearby Wardens must learn valve locations first aid hours and map preparation and must list ambulances and the sick in their sector The class uses a wooden dummy bomb to show handling and spray water to suppress incendiaries Leaflets with instructions were distributed and newspapers asked to publish them Attendees came from Chadwick Thomson Lanark Milledgeville Shannon Mt Carroll and other communities

Savanna's Times Theatre Set to Open July 28

Savanna announces the Times Theatre will open Tuesday July 28 under manager Vern Malone who arrived from Monroe Louisiana. The new theatre features cream porcelain enamel front terrazzo lobby indirect lighting air conditioning and distinct smoking and powder rooms with specially designed furniture. The auditorium uses blended rose green and white decor with a floodlit stage and rose drapes. U S Army Renews Milk Contract With Stransdale Farms

U S Army officials at Savanna ordnance depot renewed the milk supply contract with Stransdale Farm Products of Savanna. The firm is described as the only dairy in Carroll or Jo Daviess counties meeting the depot’s sanitary standards and qualified to bid for and fulfill contracts for the quartermaster department and government employees. To meet demand, Stransdale Farm Products is expanding its plant and adding equipment.

One Killed in Route 80 Crash Near Fulton

State Highway 80 crash south of Fulton claimed life of Max Beech el 21 of Mrephetstown who died in Clinton hospital hours after injury. Beechel rode with Vincent Mays of Sterling when Mays lost control and crashed into a bridge abutment. They were returning from a Tri-Cities union meeting at about 4 am. Beecher suffered a deep throat laceration and skull fracture. Mays was also severely injured and in critical condition.

Methodists Campmeet Opens 24th at Lena Campgrounds

Northern Illinois Methodists begin the 72nd annual camp meeting at Lena with daily services July 24 through August 2 and multiple institutes. Four Injured In Crash Near Palisades Park

Four people were injured in a 4:30 p m Sunday crash on Route 80 two miles north of Savanna. Frank Gillen 24 of Sterling driver of the car suffered three fractured ribs a sprained ankle and facial bruises. Joseph Hernandez 21 of Savanna had facial hand and chest cuts. Angie Hernandez Savanna had a deep leg gash stitches and facial bruises. Mrs Joe Urrutia Sterling was facially cut and bruised. All were treated at Savanna hospital and released.

Savanna Woman Patty Youngman Leonard Dies at 73

Mrs. Patty Youngman Leonard, 73, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at her Savanna home after a month bedridden. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday at Savanna Presbyterian Church with Rev. Chester Irwin. burial in Savanna cemetery. Born March 20, 1869 in Freeport. married Jeremiah Leonard November 10, 1887 at Rock City. Survived by three children and several relatives.

Duck Season Extended to Seventy Days in 1942

Secretary Ickes announced a 70 day duck season for 1942 with hours from sunrise to sunset and hunting in three zones. Open dates are Sept 26 in the north, Oct 15 in the intermediate, and Nov 2 in the south. Possession extends 30 days after the close. Goose and dove limits are tightened.

Autos damaged Saturday near Mt Carroll

Two cars sustained damage in a late Saturday accident at the Hartman corner near the old fairgrounds west of Mt Carroll. Drivers were Fred Wagner of Chicago and Donald Knauer of Mt Carroll. no injuries were reported. Wagner’s eastbound vehicle and Knauer’s westbound car sideswiped on the curve, damaging multiple fenders and running boards.

Carroll County Issues First Bicycle and Tire Purchase Certificates

The Carroll county rationing board issued first certificates for bicycle purchases to Kenneth Truninger of Savanna and for new grade two tires to Glenn Buckwalter of Thomson. Between July 1h and July 18, certificates covered passenger tires and tubes, truck tires and tubes, implement tires and tubes, and retreads, with many recipients listed including Joseph Yeager Lanark Nell Fay Stewart Mt. Carroll Howard Rice Leroy North and others. 216 voters registered in the county, a small share of the over 10,000 eligible voters.
