Used car prices rise since year's start but will be controlled under new price ceilings for 25 makes and 6 000 models made 1927 to 1942. Fire destroys Becker home near Savanna Wacker

Fire Monday morning swept a two story eight room frame house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Becker Jr. near Wacker five miles southeast of Savanna. Loss estimated 7000 to 8000 dollars with some insurance. A small garage also burned. neighbors freed a car by breaking a window in the car floor to roll it out.

Tax collection in Carroll County shows strong payment rate

More than 76 percent of Carroll County's 1943 tax bill is paid, with some townships at 82 percent. Treasurer Frank L. Ross cites timely payments and notes delinquencies are unlikely this year. Three distributions totaling 164,500 have been sent to taxing units, as shown in township totals.

Plan Two Sales At Mt Carroll On July 14 15

Turney Descendants Reunion Held at Old Mill Park

The annual reunion of the descendants of James and Mary Turney will be held at Old Mill Park in Savanna on Sunday, July 16. Mr and Mrs Francis Burdick and Mr and Mrs Louis Heller of Rockford were fourth of July guests at the Mervin Marshall home. Mr and Mrs Irve Martindale are visiting relatives and friends in Baraboo Wisconsin this week.

Grain storage and hay price ceilings set by AAA plan

Herman Daehler of Carroll county AAA urges using CCC steel bins to ease grain storage. A few 2000 bushel bins remain at Sterling with details from the Morison AAA office. Alfalfa hay prices are capped in dollars per ton, lifting maximums by about 1.25 in western states and parts of Texas, while retail prices may drop 4 to 7 dollars per ton in other states. Base prices depend on delivery month, hay grade, bale type, handling, and region. Carroll county farm machinery rationing lists permits for new equipment from July 8 to July 8, 1944, including tractors, hayleaders, rakes, elevators, a combine, and a corn planter.

Rippled Children Clinic Set at Rockford July 20

A crippled children clinic will be held at J Anthony's hospital in Rockford on Thursday July 20 from 9 00 to 2 00 pm. Lawrence J Linck director of the Division of Service for Crippled Children of the University of Illinois will conduct the event with the Winnebago County Medical Society and the Rockford Visiting Nurse Association. The aim is to provide expert diagnosis and arrange treatment funding for families unable to pay. Eligible are crippled children under 21 and adults with recent poliomyelitis. County Board Meets Tuesday with Light Agenda

Carroll county board of supervisors held a routine monthly session at the county seat. Reports from the audit bureau and the June grand jury on the county jail were presented and accepted. Resolutions on old age assistance were read and discussed along with local views on the law requiring financially able children to support aged parents. The chair reappointed Mrs. Hannah E. Straka to the tuberculosis sanitarium board for a three year term. A heating system repair estimate was referred to the building committee. A petition for repairs to the Mitchell bridge was granted, and a bridge committee was formed by the chairman appointing Supervisors Aha Carroll and Mahood.

County bond chairman Robert L. Morris reports Carroll County reached 75 percent of its E bond quota and 83-84 percent of related sales as of July 7, with hopes to win a prize of a Jap Zero fighter in Pearl Harbor if all three quotas are met. Buford Cow Tops County DHIA in Carroll County

Buford Brothers registered Holstein tops June DHIA with 108.7 pounds butterfat and 2,364 pounds milk. Second high is a Brown Swiss from R. R. Porter and son with 76.8 fat and 1,707 milk. third a Grade Guernsey from Holland and Pratt with 70.2 fat and 1,080 milk. The Harry Tallman herd leads the top herd list for a fifth straight month with 54.6 fat and 1,230 milk average.

Local visits and suppers shared among Savanna residents

Mr and Mrs John Hallman and family visited the Charles Bristol home in Savanna Monday evening. Frank Switzer of Mt Carroll called on Mr and Mrs Roy Hellman Sunday afternoon. Harvesting Seed Boosts 4A Payments in Carroll County

Carroll county farmers can earn additional 1945 production practice payments by harvesting more legume and grass seed. SAA chairman Herman Daehler says Congress provided 12 000 additional funds to encourage seed harvests, with $3 50 per acre for alfalfa red clover alsike white clover and various grasses and 3 ½ cents per pound for red clover alsike and alfalfa seed. Payments require clean seed and apply with other farm allowances. He urges reduced grazing on legume fields and notes domestic needs and aid to liberated nations. Voters to Decide Amendment Allowing Sheriff and Treasurer to Succeed Themselves

Clerical workers prepare a four page voter pamphlet arguing in favor of an Illinois constitutional amendment to let sheriffs and county treasurers seek successive terms. The measure appears on the November 7 ballot and requires a majority of votes in the election.

Carroll county cattle led the Chicago Stock Yards trade last week. Ed Kamsmeier near Shannon earned the top price of 17.50 per cwt on 22 Hereford steers weighing 1320 pounds. Fred Guenzler of Lanark shipped 22 Hereford steers at 1319 pounds on Monday. Riley Lotzbaugh of Lanark sold 31 Aberdeen Angur steers at 17.50 per cwt, averaging 1218 pounds.
