Charles Queckboerner a familiar Chadwick figure and longtime Carroll County farmer discusses changes in farming and land debt myths. Born 1854 in New York City he moved to Garrell County as a child and later married Katherine Merls. The couple celebrated a golden wedding after years of farming the home place and expanding holdings.
Harvey Kahler of Chadwick leads Carroll County war vets among 1,200 men transferred from Camp Custer Michigan to Camp Grant. The advance unit, including three other Carroll County veterans, will help rebuild Camp Grant during their stay.
The northern district federal year ending July shows bankruptcy petitions dropping to 271 from 342, a decline of 30 percent, while criminal actions increase 42 percent. Judge Charles E. Woodward noted similar civ il caseload levels, with about 46 differences year over year. William Ties announced the filing totals between July 1, 1941 and July 1, 1932.
Carroll County girls 4 H clubs prepare for the county contest at Carroll High School in the final week of July. Plans by Mrs. Roske include dress and undergarment entries by year level, with demonstration and judging teams from most clubs. Winners may advance to district and state fairs, reflecting years of project work by members across Lanark Stitch and Chatter, Fall, Mt. Carroll, and other clubs.
Savanna Public Library will shut for the month of August to reserve funds for current bills. Illinois leads all states in farm bankruptcies for the year ended June 30, 1902 with more than 9,000 farmers filing. The bureau reports 61 Illinois cases, far ahead of Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Indiana, New York, and Georgia, while the previous year showed lower figures across the board.
The gas tax revenue will be split so cities and villages in Illinois receive one third for road construction and repair within municipal limits. In Carroll County the distributions include Chadwick 821.3, Lanark 1792.00, Milledgeville 1204.00, Arbans 672.00, and Beron 877.4 each year for four years totaling 5 768.00 for the county. The plan, backed by the Illinois Municipal League, aims to curb diversion of funds and boost urban street projects.
A historic plan proposes Thomson melon growers form a cooperative selling point on the pavement for easy truck and rail access. A board of directors would elect a manager to run operations, with growers optionally selling retail melons only and restricting quantities per party.
A 212 man unit residing at Smith’s Park near Mount Carroll begins a six month soil erosion prevention program. Led by Ist Lt E B Chrysta rans and Ist Lt Charles Wesner, the group traveled from Camp Grant to Mt Carroll on a special train. They set up quarters, planned camp operations, and will construct facilities as they work under army supervision with cooks providing balanced meals.
