As the Democratic national convention in Chicago opens the column notes Roosevelt's likely nomination and the complex task of choosing a running mate. It also covers bank lending trends in Illinois, a sheriff’s anti bad check system, and political moves shaping the 1940 campaign.
County Judge Orson M. Grove overruled objections to the confirmation of appointments of eight Democratic judges and clerks of election in Carroll county precincts. Walter Sherlock, Sa vanna chairman, had challenged the selections saying independents should follow central committee recommendations. Sherlock plans to appeal in circuit court. similar prior challenges were also overruled.
The Carroll county American Legion unit met in the Milledgeville Village hall Monday evening. Eber Shepherd county commander presided. A resolution favored Paul Armstrong for National Commander at the Danville state convention. Harold Evans and Bruce Mahher of Savanna installed officers including Commander C. F. Moon Milledgeville and others from Shannon Lanark Savanna Mt. Carroll Chadwick.
Jo-Carroll Electric cooperative seeks more applicant names and farm locations in Elizabeth to expand service in Carroll County. Floyd I Ruble says funds require a September 1 deadline to attach extensions to the original project and finish before winter. About 169 miles of the 300 mile plan are in service now.
A marriage license is issued in Clinton to George F. Deem of Clinton and Helen Schreiner of Milledgeville.
Construction of a new corn crib and overhead granary on the Conrad Heinze farm at the southeast corner of Mt. Carroll is nearing completion under F. J. Eckel of Chadwick. The 28 foot long crib has concrete floors on both sides of a central drive and will use a portable elevator. The roof uses laminated rafter Gothic arch construction, removing central posts and increasing storage while offering greater strength.
June saw 21 births in Carroll county with 13 girls and 8 boys and 11 deaths. Registries note 28 late certificates from past years. Names, birthdates, and places include Ellen Elizabeth Savanna June 3 and William Harvey Savanna June 7. Multiple cemeteries listed for interments. one stillbirth recorded. Court sessions noted for July 22 and 29.
Inquests reveal Glen Sack killed his family and then himself in a barn based murder suicide. Florence Sack Beat rice and Glen Sack Jr. died from gunshot wounds inflicted by Glen Sack. The案 bodies were found in the family auto after the sequence and the dog’s body was found in the vehicle.
The Carroll County Farm Bureau and county AAA office relocated Friday to the second floor of the old I O O F building in Mt Carroll. The AAA staff will move into front rooms as remodels finish, with permanent quarters planned in a few days. The Farm Bureau will stay in the hall until September when Mt Carroll’s post office moves, after which headquarters will be in the west ground floor rooms. Marth Brothers, new building owners, plan razing the old structure and building a Mt Carroll variety store then occupying the new building by October.
Edson Holland of Thomson sold 25 head of steers weighing 1020 pounds for 10.75 per hundredweight. The cattle averaged just over two pounds daily gain while on his farm after purchase at 472 pounds.
Custodian Fro Tack reports the big spring at Palisades Park in Mississippi has resumed flowing after drying up for weeks. The flow shifted about 20 feet south of its former location and plans are to pipe water to drinking fountains near the old site. Visitors had missed the refreshment while awaiting the spring’s return.
Carroll county farmers may redeem their 1937 and 1938 corn stored on farms for 58 cents per bushel through Oct 1 1940 aligning with the 1939 corn rate. The change follows the Commodity Credit Corporation cut on July 5 and eases accrued charges. Extended loans mature Aug 1 1940 with storage obligations to Oct 1 1940. About 18.14 million bushels were resealed last fall.
Seventy five people attended the annual picnic at Old Mill Park in Savannah on Tuesday. The event, sponsored by the Carroll County Federation of Women's Clubs, drew representatives from all communities except Shannon. At the business meeting, the group set the fall conference for Thomson on Oct 29 and announced a regional conference in Freeport on Oct 17.
President Roosevelt signed a bill relieving Lieut. Paul E La Master of responsibility for 1158 dollars stolen in a payroll robbery at Camp Carroll Illinois Civilian Conservation Corps camp March 31 1939. La Master was killed during the robbery and the bill directs credit of the amount to Captain David H Passell. The ledger covers an early recovery and references related divorce proceedings of Agnes A Hubble and Thomas R Hubble in Savanna.
A Tuesday grand jury returned indictments naming three men in a criminal case. The report notes the Illinois road maps for 1940 issued by the secretary of state and available at the Review office for motorists.

Oscar E. Heard 84 former Illinois Supreme Court justice from the Sixth district died Monday night at his Freeport home after a weeklong illness. Born June 26 1856 he served as circuit judge from 1909 to 1924 and on the high court from 1924 to 1933 where he was acting chief justice for two terms. He practiced law in Freeport with his son Oscar E. Heard Jr after leaving the bench. Funeral services were held Wednesday at his home with Dr. David L. McNary officiating. Burial in Oakland Cemetery. He was survived by four grandchildren and preceded in death by his wife and a daughter.
Don DeRusha a 16 year old from Schiller Park pled guilty to theft of a boat motor. He was fined 100 dollars and costs by County Judge O M Grove. The motor belonged to Dr D B Wolf of Savanna.
Robert Puter baugh of Lanark, a noted Carroll county stockman, sold 21 head of prime beeves fed on his farm. The cattle averaged 1311 pounds and brought $11.40 per cwt at the Chicago Stock Yards. Hog prices also rose with a Thursday top of $6.90 per cwt, the year’s peak to date.
Electric power at Savanna Ordnance depot was cut for about 45 minutes Tuesday afternoon while high voltage lines were repaired after a messenger wire touched them. Five utilities linemen were working below and were not injured.
