Unidentified Man Crushed In Rail Car In Savanna Yards
Early Sunday morning the crushed body of an unidentified man was found in a gondola type freight car in the Milwaukee railroad yards at Savanna by train crew. An inquest found death from crushing injuries. The victim, about 50, had no identification. Fingerprints were taken to aid identification. The body was buried in Savanna cemetery.

Brooks Construction company of Fort Wayne Indiana was the low bidder on the Savanna Ordnance depot project to pave 23 000 square yards of concrete pavement. The bid totaled 45 294 75 dollars and came from seven bids. Final approval in Washington will let the contract and work will begin soon. The paving will connect the lower post with the upper area.

Fire destroys farm residence near Savanna
A two story frame house on the Frank Frederick farm eight miles north of Savanna burned shortly before noon on Friday. Mrs. Frederick started a gasoline washing machine motor in the summer kitchen, left for water, and returned to find the room aflame. Neighbors and Savanna fire department arrived as the blaze was already out of control. most household furnishings were destroyed and part of the loss was covered by insurance.

Milledgeville Court Actions Include Guilty Plea and Juries
Circuit court on July 15 will hear reports from petit and grand juries recalled for that date. Claire Sandell, 37, Milledgeville, pleaded guilty to a statutory charge and was sentenced to 1 to 20 years in prison. A bridge project funds were approved and wills probated for several locals. Miss Curve Crashes Into Phone Pole Near Lanark
Palmer Cramer of Savanna and Robert Hann of Joliet escaped serious injuries when their Pickard Studebaker Commander coupe failed to turn at routes 72 and 75 four miles north of Lanark and four miles west of Shannon. A broken telephone pole, $400 plus in damages, and a deep ditch accompanied the nose dive. Cramer sustained a deep elbow cut requiring four stitches. Hann had minor bruises. The car suffered major damage to the radiator grill bumper fenders wheels and frame. The youths were returning to Savanna from Rockford and were aided to Savanna by Dr. E C Turner and Mrs. Lela Turner.

Grain Harvest Begins in County Fields
Harvesting of small grain crons began this week in parts of the county as farmers handle hay and corn work. A binder cut oats on the Albert Hook farm east of Thomson while rye was being cut on the Stransky farm near Ayers crossing. More fields soon ready. small grain harvest likely to be in full swing within one or two weeks. Corn growth appears normal overall with a few replanted or late planted areas.

Two Drownings Reported After Boat Accident
