Northern Illinois WPA district starts a survey of non profit groups to map civilian services for defense. Canners will ask about training in 36 activities including ambulance, sewing, first aid, and air raid services, aiming to publish a nationwide directory. Carroll county draft board releases names of twelve white men called for induction on July 28 as the July quota. No colored men were included. Frank Ross Home Damaged By Fire

Fire hit the Frank Ross residence in Mt. Carroll last Tuesday night with an estimated $500 loss. Investigators suspect a kerosene stove caused the blaze, damaging the kitchen and a second room while smoke and heat affected other areas as the family tended a garden.

New Draft Lottery Slated for July Seventeen

A national draft lottery to determine the call order for youths registered under theSelective Service Act will be held in Washington at 6 p m Thursday July 17 The drawing in the departmental auditorium will use the same glass jar as the October lottery Secretary of War Stimson will draw the first number Registrants with low serial numbers may not be first called but the lowest numbers drawn today may enter the army in July or August The drawing will take about two hours as 750 numbers are to be drawn The largest July registration district total was 661.

Savanna Native Dies in Chicago

Thomas Upchurch, 60, a Savanna native who had lived in Chicago, died Sunday there. Funeral rites were held Wednesday in Ohio. He was the son of Mrs. Alice Upchurch, formerly of Savanna, and a first cousin of Robert and B E Fuller of Savanna. Surviving are his wife, several children, his mother, and his brothers and sisters.

Court Reporter Severely Hurt In Auto Crash

Arthur Patrick, 83, of Freeport, court reporter for Circuit Judge Harry E. Wheat, was seriously injured Tuesday of last week when his car left the road and struck a tree near Shannon. He was unconscious on arrival at a Freeport hospital, with brain concussion and severe facial, head, and body injuries. his car was demolished and pinned in the wreck.

Merry Sewers 4 H Club Plans Coming Meets

The Merry Sewers 4 H club of Argo Fa announces an Achievement Day for Friday July 18 at the Argo Fa community house in cooperation with the Argo Home Economics club. The program includes songs solos band numbers and a style revue. A regular meeting is planned for next Tuesday at Miss Jean Rawlins home with a program featuring a roll call talk and performances.

Thieves Take 55 From Savanna Cleaners Safe

Savanna Cleaners and Dyers owner Arthur Weidman found the safe door open Sunday morning and $55 missing after entry through a window and cut screen. Police report says the burglars forced a window in the cleaning room and entered the main building before stealing the cash.

Fresh Fields opens Frances Shimer summer theatre season

The Frances Shimer Summer Theatre at Mt Carroll Illinois presents Ivor Novello's Fresh Fields opening July 18 at 8 15 p m for five Friday performances. Directed by Charles Shain with Lawrence Carra producing the three act comedy about two sisters and a mansion social climbers. Season tickets show strong advance sales and audience anticipation.

Dress Revue and Judging Planned for County 4-H Day

County Achievement Day for 4-H girls will be held Thursday July 31 at the Farm Bureau auditorium Mt Carroll. Activities start at 10 am with a dress revue clothing and foods judging and a brief program by club members. Five girls will advance to the state contest later in the summer with two winners in dress and two in foods.

Sunday return from ten day West tour

Mr and Mrs Homer Switzer of Edinburg and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Whitney returned Sunday evening from a ten day trip to the Black Hills Yellowstone Park and Boise Idaho covering about 4000 miles. They noted fine crops and abundant spring and summer rains with Yellowstone reporting rain all but four days since Memorial day. They visited relatives in Boise and stopped at the King Brothers sheep ranch near Laramie observing a large purebred flock. They could not visit Julesburg due to time.

Courthouse Briefs: Marriage License and Local Real Estate Transfers

A marriage license was issued by County Clerk Walter Watson to Charles David Switzer of Thomson and Frances Louise Thomas of Big Rock. Over the past two weeks Circuit Clerk John R. Gelwicks logged numerous warranty and quitclaim deeds involving multiple properties in Shannon Savanna Lanark and nearby areas, plus a jail-release notice: Wilbur Whitmer of Lanark was released after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct and paying a $10 fine.
