Statewide Sales Tax Cut and Alcohol Tax Hikes Take Effect
Citizens face a two percent sales tax down from three percent starting July 1. Cigarettes rise to three cents per pack, beer to four cents per gallon, liquor from 50 cents to one dollar per gallon, light wines to fifteen cents and heavy wines to forty cents per gallon. Governor Green backed the changes, forecasting net savings of about ten million dollars annually. Officials estimate twenty four thousand taverns and liquor outlets must adjust to higher liquor and beer taxes and around sixty to seventy five thousand outlets sell cigarettes.

Men of 52nd Ordnance Company Return from Maneuvers
The 52nd Ordnance Company of the Savanna Ordnance Depot, after maneuvers at Murfreesboro Tennessee since May 20, arrived back at the depot Saturday morning at 9 30. The group included 108 men and officers. The return was by 13 truck convoys and several officers autos with Lieut Bond in command. They left Murfreesboro July 3 camped at Giant City state park near Carbondale and spent the final night at Elmwood in a Civilian Conservation Corps camp.

Mrs Wurster Injured Falling Through Store Glass Door
Mrs. Glen Wurster of Zion suffered a deep seven inch leg gash and a nose cut when she believed the Mt. Carroll dry goods store door was open and fell through the plate glass. She received first aid and was hospitalized in Savanna. She is recovering after surgery and shock. Mrs. Wurster is a former Iva Mae Schroth of Thomson.

Truck Free Falls Embankment After Brake Release
A Ford ice delivery truck for City Ice and Fuel roared down Hill Street in Savanna last Saturday at 5:30 p.m. It crashed into the garage at the rear of John C. Rogers residence after Joe Belander and Paul G. Kaiser tried to stop it. Belander leapt clear as the truck plunged over the embankment, leaving the garage frame and doors badly damaged. The incident ended with the cab and front of the truck wrecked and no injuries reported. Separately, Carroll County Womans club to hold picnic July 15 at Point Rock Park.

John K. Morris dairy herd of 28 Guernseys led Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement for June with 781 pounds milk and 39.6 fat. Two cows were dry.
