Brig. Gen. Lewis B. Hershey ordered the deferment of all men 28 and over subject to induction. Lester Eastabrooks 21 of Milledgeville died when his truck struck a halted vehicle on Route 65 four miles east of Aurora. An inquest ruled accidental death from a basal skull fracture. He left a wife Elizabeth Ryder and a young son Junior, plus two stepchildren.

Hanover Woolen Mill resumed operations at 7 am last Thursday after a one and a half day walkout by spinners. The strike began Tuesday noon as workers sought a 20 percent wage increase but the firm, led by president F. E. Harvey, said current orders do not support higher pay and workers agreed to return to work at existing wages after a second conference.
Farm Adviser M P Roske reports 215 youths in Carroll County 4-H clubs, up 30 from last year, across 288 projects including dairy swine beef and crops. Eight clubs exist in eight towns with Lanark hosting two clubs. Judge George Dixon will preside at Mt Carroll circuit court Monday July 7 in his first local bench appearance since April election.
Five youths travel from Thomson and Savanna to Springfield for the annual Boys State under the Illinois department of the American Legion. More than 200 workers from Edward M Roche Co. of Freeport walked out at Savanna Army Ordnance Depot delaying construction of igloo magazines for munitions. Col Crim said the strike should end peacefully by week’s end as unions push for a 40 hour week and union-preferred subcontracting, while wage gains were pledged to rise to 1.25 dollars for carpenters and 75 cents for laborers under new contracts.
Foster Black of Walnut NL associate grower for Pfister Hybrids spent Saturday in Carroll County among Pfister users. He was joined by Rev Keener of Palymia PA working in Pennsylvania where Black corn covers the state. A Pfistergrams feature will cover the Stransky farms and their Pfister hybrids in the next issue.

Five Thomson and Savanna youths attend Boys State in Springfield. Milledgeville youth dies in a truck crash near Aurora. Savanna prepares July 4 5 festivities with a grand parade and fireworks. 109 young men register under the selective service act. July 9 board meets to assign serial numbers. Deferment ordered for registrants 28 or older for 30 days pending action on relief bill. Savanna ordnance depot contractor employees strike over pay and hours.
State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports June age assistance rose to 146 650 recipients totaling 3 397 327 dollars. May had 145 899 recipients receiving 3 350 243 dollars. Downstate 95 639 got 2 046 625 dollars and Cook county 61 011 got 1 350 704 dollars. Federal matches half. rest from state treasury. Carroll county lists 441 recipients receiving 9 670 dollars.
Carroll county Old Settlers association announces committees for the 68th annual reunion to be held at Lanark on Thursday August 21. Committees cover concessions park program decorations soliciting band barbecue advertising entertainment juvenile parade and association officers led by President Lloyd Peters and other officers.
Forty-five men building houses at Hanover quit Monday due to heat and did not complete their shifts. Reports say 150 carpenters are on the project with completion aimed for early August.
In this county 100 registrants with order numbers 1769 through 1868 received their questionnaires this week leaving about 200 from last October’s list unsent. The weekly list features numerous individuals including Forrest S. Flack Kenneth W. Dunworth Russell D. Switzer and many others across towns such as Savanna Lanark Mill edgeville and Savanna.
B L Peck of Mt Carroll is appointed public administrator in Carroll County by Governor Dwight Green, succeeding Grover Reddington of Shannon.
Savanna readies a July 4 celebration featuring a mammoth parade with 20 floats, riverfront fireworks at Marquette park, water carnival, dances, and a boxing card at the high school field. Six Golden Gloves boxers headline an 8:30 p.m. start, part of a daylong lineup under the Van Bibber-Hansen American Legion post.
One hundred nine men who turned 21 since Oct 16 registered July 1 in Carroll County for selective service. Eighty two are county residents, 27 from other counties registered here for convenience. Harry Adams of Mt. Carroll led registrants. Serial numbers will be assigned after a July 9 board meeting, then a national drawing will set the order for questionnaires. No date for the drawing had been announced.
Albin C. Bro president of Frances Shimer junior college at Mt. Carroll received the honorary Doctor of Letters from Northland College Ashland Wisconsin. He attended the Northland commencement a few days ago to receive the degree. He is an alumnus of Northland with a 1917 Bachelor of Arts from the college.
