Babson Park Massachusetts January 21. Babson discusses automatic vending machines as supplementary sales aids for low cost items like cigarettes and candy. He cautions profits are small per machine and stresses advertising, packaging, and suitable locations to avoid vandalism and wage pressures.
Carroll County residents bought 96,811 in Series E United States Savings Bonds in December, boosting 1953 E and H bond sales to 1,118,974. The county reached 141.7 percent of its 1953 quota, with Illinois statewide at 101.7 percent.
Doretta Pickens and Harold Newendyke wed in a double ring ceremony at Fair Haven FE United Church of Christ on Wednesday January 20. The couple, from Chadwick and Milledgeville, exchanged vows before Rev. Clarence Stanley with a reception at the Fair Haven basement. The bride and groom will reside in Morrison after February 1.
Kraft Foods fieldmen LaRue Geary and Oran Bryant tour Milledgeville dairies urging regular cow clipping. They say short hair keeps cows cleaner, reduces sediment in milk, and speeds milking, aiding disease prevention and lower waste.
In the past week County Clerk W M Nipe issued a license to Melvin G Roberts and Ruth Ann McCue of Savanna. Four divorces were granted in Carroll County Circuit Court by Judge Robert L Bracken: Earvin Jones from Pearly Mae Jones Savanna Pearl Bolander from Charles Bolander Savanna Laurel I Olson from Teman Olson Savanna and Ruth W Klock from Leonard Klock Lanark.

Bill Spealman son of Mr and Mrs Dwight Spealman of Chadwick received two large trophies from John Abbott Jr of Black Abbott Farms Walnut at a Chadwick high school assembly. Pfister Associated Growers sponsored the honor for his 10 ear corn sample that won Reserve Grand Champion at the 1953 Chicago International Livestock and Grain Show.
Chadwick Mon tague of Chadwick Illinois has been granted exclusive use of the herd name Home Place for registering purebred Holstein Friesian cattle. The prefix will be recorded by the Holstein Friesian Association of America as 1400 prefixes in 1953 were reserved for breeders.
Gilbert Moothart has received his discharge from service and with Mrs. Moothart returned home Thursday from Bremerton Washington where they spent the last two months. For the present they will be with her parents Mr. and Mrs Harold Schleuning.
Morris Cook 44 of Sterling died at Home hospital of head and neck injuries from an accident at the Northwestern Steel and Wire plant where he guided wire onto a drum. A coroner jury ruled accidental death. He served as general foreman in the wire drawing department and is survived by his wife Helen Cunniff two sons his father and several siblings. Burial planned at Calvary cemetery after services at St Mary’s Church.

Includes major lesson dates at Farm Bureau Hall and Frances Shimer College, 4-H Rally, Farm Bureau Annual Meeting at Mt. Carroll High School, and a week of Farm and Home Week at the University of Illinois with various district programs led by local leaders and special activities.
The Jane Addams Council of Girl Scouts in Northwest Illinois held its January 20 board meeting in Freeport. Appointments were made by the president including camp committee chair Mrs. W Bingham and membership nominating chair Mrs. A M Joiner.
Mt. Carroll high school cagers captured top honors in the Carroll County Conference tournament with a varsity 64 to 46 win over Milledgeville and a frosh-soph 47 to 46 victory over Chadwick. Mt. Carroll’s varsity advanced by beating Lanark and Thomson en route to the final, while Milledgeville reached the final by edging Chadwick 62-61 in a late rally. Chadwick frosh-sophs beat Milledgeville 61-50 earlier in the night.
Dense fog and icy roads slowed traffic late Monday with freezing rain turning to snow on Tuesday. By Wednesday morning nearly two inches had fallen, Route 88 near Chadwick reported the slickest spots, and snowplows cleared danger areas as deputies noted minor incidents but no severe injuries.
Lanark Metal Fire Insurance held its annual meeting and election Tuesday at the comfort station. Truman Royer was named president Rex Rahn vice president and Forrest Thompson secretary treasurer. Three directors were reelected Truman Royer R B Gelwicks and Lloyd Peters with Royer and Rahn named to lead a strong year.
Carroll County cattle and hog feeders sold at Chicago Stock Yards with Hereford steers averaging 1155 pounds at 26.75 per cwt and 37 heifers at 24.00 per cwt. Duroc hogs 344 pounds brought 24.50 per cwt. An Iowa meeting survey showed optimistic price forecasts for cattle and hogs into May and August.
A Denver report shows National Western Stock Show and Rodeo sales booming with potential transactions near 8.5 million dollars. Top bid paid 55.77 dollars per 100 pounds for 20 Hereford steer calves sold by John Hubley of Mason City Illinois in the feeder auction. The grand champion Herefords sold for 52.50 per 100 to Henry Steel and Co of Montgomery Illinois. Champion Angus feeder calves went to Vandevere Farms of Montgomery Illinois for 36 per 100.
Tuesday reports from Deaconess Hospital say she recently underwent surgery and is improving nicely.
No county offices will be on the April primary ballot though a county school trustees contest will occur. Republicans list five county offices with one candidate each. Democrats show no county slate and both parties elect a senatoria l committeeman and precinct committeemen across numerous precincts. Local accidents included two vehicle incidents on Chicago Avenue and the Savanna Sabula bridge.
Springfield Ill Jan 20 Rehabilitation of the Old Market House at Galena moved a step closer with the award of a 23 965 bid by Cyril J Droessler of Dubuque. The project aims to repair the walls excavate the basement rebuild the roof and restore the east and west wings. The building dates to 1845 and served as a slave market and trading center in Jo Daviess County.
LeRoy Johnson 23 of Ustick township Whiteside County died when his car collided with a Burlington freight train on a blacktop crossing about three miles northeast of Fulton around 2:30 am Monday. The car struck the 109th car of a 116 car train and was dragged 500 feet. Skid marks showed 66 feet of wheel sliding before impact. Johnson, born Feb 20 1930 in Tampico, leaves parents Gunnar and Eleanor Swanson Johnson and three sisters Mrs John Olson, Mrs Warren Gay, and Mrs Ray Belde. He had lake Manlius high school, Lutheran church ties, and worked in Clinton, Iowa.
The Salem Home Bureau unit met in the home of Mrs Daniel Nelson with 14 members and one guest. Major lesson on achieving good results with a sewing machine was given by Mrs Nelson and Mrs Queckboerner. Recreation led by Mrs Wallace Dresbach. Minor lesson on casserole dishes demonstrated by Mesdames James Morgan Dwight Spearman C M Honberger and Reynold Bloyer. A polio fund collection was taken.
