Changes in Carroll County school districts advance petitions

Two petitions filed with the Carroll County board of trustees seek district changes. One withdraws signatures from an Argo-Fa district 77 annexation to Thomson grade district, while the other requests transferring about 900 acres west of Wacker from Mt. Carroll high to Savanna high school district. The area lies nine miles from Mt. Carroll and five miles from Savanna.

Savanna Woman Former City Comptroller Dies

A Chestnut Park and Savanna high school graduate, she served nearly 18 years as Savanna city comptroller and later worked as assistant secretary at Savanna Savings Building and Loan. She was married to Dr. Philip Bryant of Elizabeth, who predeceased her, and she lived with her mother in Chestnut Park. Surviving are the mother, two sisters in Chicago and Freeport, a brother, and other relatives.

The Illinois high school association released district regional and sectional tourney pairings. District meets begin February 22 with regionals March 15 and sectionals opening March 10. Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross held a January meeting in Savanna with Walter Hedberg, field director for the district, and about 30 members from Milledgeville Lanark Mt. Carroll Thomson and Savanna. Savanna representatives included Elmer Struckman Albert M Greison Miss Mary Var caro Mrs H F Whitney and Charles L Reese. Hedberg spoke on Red Cross work and plans for civil defense first aid home nursing housing and mass feeding. Reese outlined the March county fund drive.

Local Feeders Ship Cattle and Hogs to Chicago Market

Carroll county feeders from Milledgeville and Lanark sent cattle and hogs to the Chicago Stock Yards on Monday. Prices showed hogs up to 27.00 per cwt, the highest since July 24, 1953, while cattle remained near last week's levels.

Utilities Seeks 9.3 Percent Electric Rate Increase

Illinois is assigned a 1954 savings bond goal of 457.3 million dollars for Series E and H bonds, about 86 percent of the national target of 5.3 billion. County Legion Auxiliary Meets In Shannon

The Carroll County American Legion Auxiliary gathered at Shannon Legion Hall on a Wednesday evening with 53 attendees. Mrs. James Chaffee led the meeting, with representation from Lanark Mill edgeville Chadwick Carroll and Shannon. Shannon had the largest attendance. Mrs. Edith Ewing directed the program, with six ladies singing and Molly Woodard dancing, accompanied by Mrs. Catherine Truckenmiller at the piano. Audrey Stoner led the refreshments crew. The next gathering is planned for Thomson in March, date to be announced.

Card Party Funds School Chair Purchases

Patrons of the Fair Haven school held a card party at the school house last Friday evening. Proceeds of about 129 dollars will buy feeding chairs for prize winners.
