Floyd Stiles of Chadwick joins a newly organized Savanna orchestra led by Paul Stevens Jr. with Steve Stevens and his orchestra. The ensemble includes Robert Soltow on trombone, George Buckman on trumpet, Edward Buckman on trumpet, Richard Soltow on drums, Miss Jeanette Truninger on piano, and other Savanna players. William Hawk and Robert Marth from Mt. Carroll contribute trumpet and saxophone.
Thomson notes Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Morse visited his mother Mrs. Laura Morse in New Boston Illinois on Sunday. They were joined by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sack of Dixon and Mrs. Emma Curley of Chadwick who spent Tuesday and Wednesday at the Dan Sack home.
Mt Carroll led 11-1 early and 26-3 at halftime to beat Carroll Ad Wick 64-14 in a league game. Carroll reserves also won 30-13. Shannon High beat Milledgeville 37-26 with reserves 26-16. Savanna High defeated Maquoketa 27-2 as Mt Carroll beat Savanna 89-36 in a later game. Murney led Mt Carroll with 21 points, Engaldo had 10 for Savanna.
The Carroll County Taxpayers association held its annual meeting at Mount Carroll Court House. President Ben Williamson praised county officials for cooperation and outlined savings from the past three years. Officers were renominated and reelected, with Vernon S. Todd as executive secretary and a full executive committee listed.
Lanark high school beat the Thom son quintet last Friday night 40 to 14 led by Pry with 13 points. Flack led York with 6 as Lanark built a 9-8 first quarter edge and expanded to 23-6 at halftime. Second team lost 29-9. Mattie led Thomson with 4 points and Merchant had 8 for Lanark. Grade school lost to Lanark.
John Parks, owner of the Parks Hatchery and Feed Store in Milledgeville, was elected secretary of the Illinois Poultry Improvement Association at a district meeting in Rockford attended by about 60 hatchery representatives. The association is affiliated with the International Baby Chick Association. Mr and Mrs Joe Blair of Thomson visited their daughter and son in law, Mr and Mrs Wayland Bennett, Sunday.
Carroll county soil conservation district directors submitted a yearly summary to the state board showing farming using conservation practices has more than doubled. The report cites contour farming strip cropping and pasture improvement on over 1800 farms with plans for 16 new participants and requests from more.
Claire R. Hollinshead aged 57 and lifelong Ustick resident died Friday night at his home. Private funeral was held Monday at J Carney funeral home Morrison with Rev. H G Arink officiating and burial in Hollinshead cemetery. He was born March 6 1886 in Ustick township and survived by two brothers D Earle of Morrison and C Burton of Fulton. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Mitchell and Mary Wagner of Morrison spent the weekend at the Ben Wagner home and attended the high school carnival. Mr. Mitchell is a brother of Mrs. Wagner. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Holland were Tuesday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kemmer.
Lt. Donald C. Sprecher twenty five year old son of Mr and Mrs Charles Sprecher Milledgeville is reported missing in action January 11 after a bombing raid over German held territory The family received notice from the war department and the flier had written January 8 describing his first operational flight and two enemy fighters down His relatives hold hope he is a prisoner or alive and awaiting further details from the war department He is the first Milledgeville youth reported missing in this war and leaves a sister Lorain and several brothers in service
Carroll County Farm Bureau plans its annual meeting at Mt. Carroll high school gym on Saturday January 29. Morning sessions start at 10 am with reports from the director insurance director treasurer and farm adviser. A noon lunch precedes the 1 pm business session electing president and township directors. Guest speaker James Green of Madison Wisconsin delivers the day’s address. Afternoon features Music by Laws orchestra Woodland school band Hans entertainers and the Schubert sisters.
The Milwaukee Road credits $50 000 in bonds to Carroll county as part of a $20 000 000 government securities purchase planned across its 12-state system for the Fourth War Loan drive. Illinois receives $3,480,000 to be distributed among 22 counties. Trustee H A Seandrett told a Chicago federal court the investment aids the war effort and benefits the railroad.
A Rock Island recruiter will be at the Savanna Post Office on February 3, 1944 at 1 p.m. and at Fulton at 10:30 a.m. to interview men for the Navy or Naval Reserve and women for the Naval Reserve and WAVES. WAVES must be 20 or older with at least two years of high school. Eligible men 17 may enlist. 38 to 50 may enlist with special skills. Bring birth or baptismal certificates and parental consent notes.
A skating party and weiner roast were enjoyed Sunday by Glendora Schade Verda Crowe Ben and Car roll Dimmick. It is unusual to skate and picnic at this time of year. Monday evening callers with Mrs. Anna Jenkins included Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sack of Argo.
Three Carroll county high schools will play in the Shannon district cage tournament with the winner advancing to the Mt. Carroll regional along with two other Carroll teams. Four Shannon district entrants are How team Chadwick Thomson and Elizabeth. The Dixon regional hosts Milledgeville and other area teams including Amboy Dixon Prophetstown Rock Falls Sterling Township Sterling Community and Franklin Grove district winner.
An all day district conference of Triple-A county committeemen and farm advisers set for Tuesday Feb 1 in Dixon will center on the 1944 farm program. On Feb 8 community committeemen meet in Mt Carroll to learn how to present the plan to farmers who must sign a 1944 farm plan indicating yearly production intentions. Payments for 1944 hinge on production conservation practices with set maximums per farm and various practices earning added payments, including limestone and phosphate spreading, hay seed harvest, pasture improvement, contour intertilled crops at 1.50 per acre, contour seeding of small grains 0.50 per acre, and contour stripcropping 2.50 per acre.
Major Walter E. Browne of the Savanna ordnance depot was injured when his car overturned near Mississippi Palisades state park north of Savanna around 11:45 PM on Tuesday night January 18. He was taken to the post hospital for treatment after the accident. The vehicle was badly damaged.
Master Charles Gordon and the Black Hawk Grange named committee rosters last Thursday night. Finance includes Farthing and Krempel. home economics lists Gordon Farthing and others. membership covers Arnold Farthing and Mrs. Deets. About 40 members enjoyed the program and social time. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Halfman and Mrs. Olson.
Sunday guests included Mrs. Mary Jane McGinty and Maude McGinty of Thom son with Eldon Hickey and family, N B Lewis and son Dick, and Betty Miller of River Forest. Ruth Ratterman of Dubuque visited Mrs. Gladys Cate. Nellie Schade joined son-in-law Delbert Dimmick for a Sunday meal. Stage Kemmer and Robert Stage families hosted guests from Rock Island.
The notice lists numerous men accepted for military service last week across Army Navy Marine Corps and names include Robert W. Pilerim of Milledgeville Paul Mackey of Chadwick Lloyd Fickert of Chadwick and many others from Mt Carroll Savanna Milledgeville and Chadwick along with Harald Barthel and Robert Isenberger among others who were inducted into different branches.
Fire about 1 15 a m Saturday razed a three room house on the J W Miller farm on Oakton road near Savana. Mr and Mrs Frank Cramer occupied the home and lost contents entirely as they fled after waking to flames. The structure had tile walls and a wood shingled roof. building loss was partly insured, contents were not.
Mrs. Leonard Koser, 19, of Savanna is in Savanna city hospital with serious injuries after a 5 p.m. crash on Route 80 at the north end of the Milwaukee railroad viaduct. Her husband and Paul Koser were injured, with the car struck by steel girders after a loss of control at the turn.
Friday evening at the Round Grove Grange hall Mr and Mrs Ed Johnson and Mrs Louis Mennenga hosted a shower for Mr and Mrs Wilbur Slager. Five hundred was the game of the night with prizes awarded. Refreshments followed and many relatives and friends from Morrison Chadwick Dixon Lyndon Me Sterling and Rock Falls attended.
The W.8 U.8 meets Wednesday afternoon February 2 with hostesses Laura Francke Clara Switzer and Iva Cr cutz. Roll call celebrates My Favorite Woman Celebrity. Mary Cone will read a short sketch of two important women. Verda Crowe of Morrison visited the Schade and Dimmick homes for the weekend.
A Carroll county jury returned a not guilty verdict Saturday evening for Divan Prowant 16 of Chadwick on a manslaughter charge arising from a February 19 collision that killed Effie Marie Shibley 17 and injured three other Chadwick girls. Testimony described fog no passing zone signs and speed estimates as witnesses placed Dean Prowant behind the wheel.
