A Sangamon county circuit court injunction blocks the Illinois Department of Revenue from certifying revised railroad and capital stock assessments, delaying 1943 tax bills. The injunction affects county clerks and treasurers as they resume work, with potential hold ups into spring primary period. state and county funds may cover current expenses, but local treasuries risk depletion if tax collection is postponed.
Illinois contains about 250000 acres of swamps and open water suitable for duck and goose shooting and about 77000 sportsmen actively hunt waterfowl, leaving roughly three acres per hunter. In contrast 300000 upland game sportsmen have access to 30000000 acres of upland lands statewide.
An amendment to tire rationing rules, effective February 1, allows some farmers and essential workers to obtain grade 1 tire certificates. It removes the 601 mile per month limit and lets boards issue grade 1 certificates to car owners with preferred mileage needs, covering teachers, physicians, and other professionals. Only running wheels may receive grade 1 tires, spares remain limited to grade 3.
John Fogel of Milledgeville was reelected president of the Carroll County Farm Bureau at the Mt. Carroll High School annual meeting. Re-elected were the vice president and secretary-treasurer, with most township directors retained. About 800 members attended as Ralph Fahrney reported 205 new or reinstated members, boosting rolls from 935 to 1054 by year end 1943. An afternoon program featured musical numbers and a talk by James Green, Wisconsin Farm Bureau secretary.
Walter Fulrath 45 died after a lingering illness at his Mt Carroll home early Saturday January 29. Funeral rites were held Monday at his home and Mt Carroll United Brethren Church. He was born September 6, 1898, in Mt Carroll, married November 28, 1918 to Mary Jones of Savanna. Surviving are his widow two daughters his mother two sisters and a brother.
The Social Security Board warns taxpayers not to rely on a complete wage statement for the March 15 income tax return. Wages from the last quarter are sent to the Internal Revenue Collector in January, then forwarded to the Social Security Board in Baltimore in February and March. About 600,000 wage items arrive daily for 47 million wage records, with full completion not until well into June.
The County Clerk W M Nipe issued marriage licenses to John P Cravatta and Rebecca Pfeiffer of Savanna, Clifford F Hastings of Savanna, and Hazel L Fulrath of Mt Carroll.
Carroll County Coroner A Schreiter of Savanna says in 1943 he held fifteen inquests and three inquiries after deaths. Inquests included three verdicts of death by own action, four drownings, eight accidental deaths from various causes. Inquiries covered sudden deaths from heart attacks.
The county farm machinery rationing committee issued permits to purchase ra tioned farm equipment during Jan 24 period. Recipients include Elmer L Kaufman Miles Miller for manure spreaders Henry A Miller Max A Rahn for hayleaders Howard Shrake for corn planters Harold Real B L Peck John Halfman for milking machines Max Rodenburg for tractor Lewis DeGraff for corn picker and William Henning for mower.
The year end figures from Illinois Secretary of State show reduced motor vehicle activity in 1943. Passenger car licenses fell by 155,416 to 1,692,837, with other licenses also down. Licensed drivers rose by 199,872 to 2,886,130, automobile fees totaled 23,668,006.03, and total sources revenue reached 26,474,667.54. Domestic corporations declined while foreign corporations and securities issues increased compared with 1942.
Sunday morning brought sun and then clouds as a light rain began after sunset. The drizzle persisted through the night into Monday, providing moisture. By noon, the sky cleared, northwest winds cooled the air, and Tuesday cooled to ten to fifteen degrees above zero.
Henry Daehler purchased the Charles Zugschwerdt estate farm last week, now the fourth farm he owns in the Chadwick area. Zugschwerdt continues to operate the property in 1944, and Daehler also rents two farms west of town to the How ard Emnyre and Donald Smith families, plus another north of town rented by Vernon Dachler. Sunday visitors were Ervin Martindale and wife of Thomson.
Illinois Public Aid Director reports January drops in Old Age Pension and Aid to Dependent Children rolls and total allowances. 1,789 fewer Old Age Pension recipients vs December. 141,937 in January. Average grant rose to 9.35 dollars. 53,778 Aid to Dependent Children cases in January. 876 dollars total payments. Carroll County records show 353 Old Age Pension recipients and 9,772 dollars in payments. Mies Maxine I. Aitken and Edward W. Hebeler wed in Savanna with 150 guests as grandparents celebrate 40th anniversary.
Shannon high school defeated York high of Thomson 60 to 12 Friday night in a Car roll conference game after a prior 38-13 win by Shannon lightweights. Fisher scored 14 and Shirk 12 for Shannon. Robinson led York with 6.
Miss Rebecca Joyce Pfeiffer and John Pasl Cravatta of Savanna wed January 27 in Mount Carroll Methodist parsonage with Judge Fourd performing. Attendants were the bride’s father and Sgt. Jack W. Wires. A wedding dinner followed at the groom’s parents’ home. The couple will reside in Chicago.
Chicago reports note a revised selective service policy allowing men in Carroll County to report for preinduction physicals at an induction center. Affected volunteers aged 36 to 45 were summoned for exams. officials withheld names while some recipients announced their orders. Local officials will not release lists until instructed, while several Chadwick and nearby residents named in the piece await guidance on disclosure.
Miss Mary M Doty and Alyson H Frederick were married Sunday Jan 30 at the Wacker Church of the Brethren in Savanna. The ceremony featured Rev William Kendall, with Weidman as best man and matron of honor, and Yvonne Frederick as bridesmaid. After a reception for over 100 at the bride’s parents’ home, the couple will live in Savanna.
Milledgeville squad defeated Chadwick 42 to 11 in the main game with Reiff scoring 16 points and Harris adding six for Chadwick. Earlier the lightweights lost 15 to 9 as Milledgeville built a first quarter lead and held on through the second period.
Mrs Selah Shipman announces the marriage of her daughter Merna Kathleen to Tech Sgt LaVerne Edwards son of Mr and Mrs Glenn Edwards both of Lanark. The ceremony Saturday January 22 at Clinton Methodist Church with Rev L Gustafson officiating. Edwards a tail gunner in the U S Air Corps overseas for eight months now on 28 day furlough awaiting pilot training.
A January survey across six northwestern Illinois counties reports two highway deaths. Ogle and Stephenson counties each recorded one fatality, while Carroll Whiteside Jo Daviess and Lee counties reported no deaths for the month.
Complete returns for last year show 1,228 deaths from highway accidents, down 22.1 percent from the preceding year and about half of those reported in 1941. Engineers cite more old cars, altered traffic, and wartime tensions for a slight rise in deaths per mile in 1943, with relative increases in pedestrian fatalities and auto train crashes.
