County Nurse Is Accepted By The Army Nurse Corps

Miss Miriam Pape, Carroll county nurse, was announced accepted into the Army Nurse Corps by Major General H.8 Au rand. She has served as county nurse since Jan 8 1942 and will end duties Jan 29. Assigned to Camp McCoy Sparta Wis she plans to depart early February after training at St Luke’s Chicago. She previously served as Franklin county nurse from West Franklin. No successor named yet. Sunday visitors included Mr and Mrs Ray Englekins.

Mary K Miller joins Wacs At Fort Des Moines

Mary K Miller of Lanark enlists in the Women Army Corps at Fort Des Moines after qualifying. Pvt Miller, a University of Illinois graduate and Lanark Community High School alumna, reports Jan 13 for six weeks basic training and may move to specialized schools and global army assignments. Her brother Russell L. Miller serves at Ft Bragg North Carolina.

Farewell Party For Slager Family In Franklin Corners

Franklin Corners residents held a farewell gathering at the Nancy Slager home for five families moving from the district. Gifts were given, Rev. Paul Book led prayer, and lunch was provided by local hosts. Attendees included area families and servicemen among others despite Mrs Carpenter’s absence due to illness.

Plans Set for 1944 Infantile Paralysis Drive

The 1944 drive for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis opens January 13 and runs to January 25. At a Savanna meeting for the county home, Mrs. Lyle Bailey was re elected county chairman, Mrs. Jess Johns was elected secretary, and Mrs. Wilmer LaShelle became treasurer.

Shannon District Cage Tourney Set in Northern Illinois

Shannon high school named as a district basketball site for the 1944 state tournament system. Ninety districts will hold meets from Feb 2 to 25 with winners moving to regionals Feb 29 to March 3 culminating in 15 sectionals. Mt Carroll hosts the regional meet. Shannon winner advances there. Nearby centers include Byron Franklin Grove Clareville and Waterman.

Shannon Flier Becomes Pilot After Pacific Front Service

Master Sergeant James H. Beck visits his uncle Mayor Walter Byers in Shannon after 22 months in the southwest Pacific. On furlough at Keesler Field he plans pilot training. Beck earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Presidential Citation, and Asiatic Pacific Theater battle stars for New Guinea and Papuan campaigns. He served as radioman gunner on a Flying Fortress and hopes to become the aircraft driver. Beck, an honor graduate of Shannon High School in 1938, enlisted July 1941, trained at Scott Field and March Field, and shipped overseas March 19, 1942. His squadron spent time in Australia and New Guinea before combat. He is son of George Beck of Polo. his mother died during his last year of high school.

County Clerks Study Plans To Speed Tax Work

County clerks met in Springfield to discuss speeding tax extension with the state revenue department. Certification of original valuations for capital stock and railroads may occur this week. Champaign and LaSalle counties seek mandamus to compel certification to railroads and corporate taxes per 194% assessments. court action in January could accelerate certification by over a month.

Farm account keepers may get help from J B Cunningham of the University of Illinois extension service at the Farm Bureau office in Mt Carroll on January 25 and 26. Farm Adviser M P Roske urged west end farmers to call the morning of the 25th and east end in the afternoon. Indictments Return in Freeport Case Over Corn Ceiling Violation

Six indictments by a district federal grand jury reported last Monday afternoon before Judge Michael J. in Freeport allege violations of the selective service act. Chester Bowles as OPA administrator and Elmer Zuck of Lanark faced a separate case with a $200.42 judgment settled on stipulation. Zuck allegedly sold corn above the ceiling price. the $209.42 compromise settled all penalties. Cases set for trial April 17 include U. S. vs. Kenneth Seisler.

Illinois adopts pre-induction exams and staggered draft

New draft regulations in Illinois require pre-induction physical exams and delay induction by at least three weeks after acceptance. A two week lull in activations from Feb 1 to 14 accompanies the switch to the national pre-induction schedule. Col. Paul G. Former Lanark Resident Dies In Akron Ohio

Mrs. Allen Martin 40 formerly Helen Burkholder of Lanark died Thursday evening in an Akron hospital where she had lived. She was born January 4, 1904 near Lanark and is survived by her husband Allen Martin and four brothers Ernest Earl Ralph near Lanark and Glenn of Freeport. Funeral services were held Monday in the Church of the Brethren with Rev. H. F. Richards officiating. Burial was in Lanark cemetery.
