The Spectator notes the fourth nationwide war loan campaign, urges buying bonds via banks or post offices, and urges citizens not to wait for solicitors. It also discusses farm machinery production shifts, war versus civilian output, weather impacts on farming, and Illinois voting rights for service members.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hockman of Mt. Carroll announce the marriage of their daughter Maxine to Pvt. Theo dore A Buckwalter son of Mr. and Mrs Henry Buckwalter of Mt. Carroll. The ceremony was conducted by Rev J A Foard at the Methodist church parsonage in Mt Carroll on Sunday afternoon Jan 9. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Milton Hockman the bride’s brother and sister in law. Buckwalter serves with a military police detachment at Camp Wallace Texas.
Miss Miriam Pape, Carroll county nurse, was announced accepted into the Army Nurse Corps by Major General H.8 Au rand. She has served as county nurse since Jan 8 1942 and will end duties Jan 29. Assigned to Camp McCoy Sparta Wis she plans to depart early February after training at St Luke’s Chicago. She previously served as Franklin county nurse from West Franklin. No successor named yet. Sunday visitors included Mr and Mrs Ray Englekins.
The Carroll County Taxpayers Association schedules its annual meeting Friday at 7 30 p m in the Mt Carroll courthouse. Speakers include Thomas E Fiske J H Eichelberger and J H Shirk with Ben Williamson presiding. A business meeting will elect officers and directors for the coming year.
Mary K Miller of Lanark enlists in the Women Army Corps at Fort Des Moines after qualifying. Pvt Miller, a University of Illinois graduate and Lanark Community High School alumna, reports Jan 13 for six weeks basic training and may move to specialized schools and global army assignments. Her brother Russell L. Miller serves at Ft Bragg North Carolina.
Franklin Corners residents held a farewell gathering at the Nancy Slager home for five families moving from the district. Gifts were given, Rev. Paul Book led prayer, and lunch was provided by local hosts. Attendees included area families and servicemen among others despite Mrs Carpenter’s absence due to illness.
The 1944 drive for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis opens January 13 and runs to January 25. At a Savanna meeting for the county home, Mrs. Lyle Bailey was re elected county chairman, Mrs. Jess Johns was elected secretary, and Mrs. Wilmer LaShelle became treasurer.

Shannon high school named as a district basketball site for the 1944 state tournament system. Ninety districts will hold meets from Feb 2 to 25 with winners moving to regionals Feb 29 to March 3 culminating in 15 sectionals. Mt Carroll hosts the regional meet. Shannon winner advances there. Nearby centers include Byron Franklin Grove Clareville and Waterman.
Master Sergeant James H. Beck visits his uncle Mayor Walter Byers in Shannon after 22 months in the southwest Pacific. On furlough at Keesler Field he plans pilot training. Beck earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Presidential Citation, and Asiatic Pacific Theater battle stars for New Guinea and Papuan campaigns. He served as radioman gunner on a Flying Fortress and hopes to become the aircraft driver. Beck, an honor graduate of Shannon High School in 1938, enlisted July 1941, trained at Scott Field and March Field, and shipped overseas March 19, 1942. His squadron spent time in Australia and New Guinea before combat. He is son of George Beck of Polo. his mother died during his last year of high school.
County clerks met in Springfield to discuss speeding tax extension with the state revenue department. Certification of original valuations for capital stock and railroads may occur this week. Champaign and LaSalle counties seek mandamus to compel certification to railroads and corporate taxes per 194% assessments. court action in January could accelerate certification by over a month.
Farm account keepers may get help from J B Cunningham of the University of Illinois extension service at the Farm Bureau office in Mt Carroll on January 25 and 26. Farm Adviser M P Roske urged west end farmers to call the morning of the 25th and east end in the afternoon. Those starting an accounting system for 194? may seek assistance from Cunningham the morning of the 26th.
Preston Prairie records show visitors including Robert from Freeport and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Coleman from Cordova. Elmer Bashaw visited January 11 from Highland Park Savanna.

Nominating petitions circulate for Atty Franklin A Stransky of Savanna who will run as Republican candidate for representative in the Illinois general assembly from the 12th senatorial district. A former Carroll county states attorney, he is completing his fourth term in this district which also includes Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties.
Carl Engaldo fullback at Savanna high named to 194% all state squad by coaches and writers. He is a senior. son of Mr and Mrs Jake Engaldo of Savanna. Other notes mention Spurgeon Harter Jr and Emmett Zumdahl visiting Great Lakes.
Six indictments by a district federal grand jury reported last Monday afternoon before Judge Michael J. in Freeport allege violations of the selective service act. Chester Bowles as OPA administrator and Elmer Zuck of Lanark faced a separate case with a $200.42 judgment settled on stipulation. Zuck allegedly sold corn above the ceiling price. the $209.42 compromise settled all penalties. Cases set for trial April 17 include U. S. vs. Kenneth Seisler.
New draft regulations in Illinois require pre-induction physical exams and delay induction by at least three weeks after acceptance. A two week lull in activations from Feb 1 to 14 accompanies the switch to the national pre-induction schedule. Col. Paul G. Armstrong notes Chicago will host the first exams and eligible navy personnel may be ordered for Feb 14 while army inductees report Feb 22.
A Civil Service bulletin announces openings in Illinois departments of public assistance. Applications for examinations must be received by January 1944 at the Merit Commission Office Springfield or postmarked by the deadline. Examinations around February 5 include local public assistance superintendent II and I, visitor I, and junior stenographer with salaries from 90 to 225 dollars monthly.
Illinois hunters need not send kill cards until Feb 10 as directed on licenses. Director Osborne notes a legislative change moved the deadline from Jan 15 to Feb 10 to aid the conservation department in balancing future game propagation and rehabilitation efforts.
Annual meeting of stockholders of the Mt Carroll Cooperative Locker Co will be held at 1 p m Thursday Feb 10. Directors announce the event and outline the schedule. A February meeting of the Carroll County Rural Youth group is set for Thursday evening Feb 3 in Farm Bureau hall at Mt Carroll.
Jurors were chosen and three special panels seated for the Dean Provant manslaughter trial with a jury of seven women and five men selected. Testimony set to begin Thursday morning at 9:50, after delays and illness affected panel turnout and multiple rounds of voir dire.
Mrs. Allen Martin 40 formerly Helen Burkholder of Lanark died Thursday evening in an Akron hospital where she had lived. She was born January 4, 1904 near Lanark and is survived by her husband Allen Martin and four brothers Ernest Earl Ralph near Lanark and Glenn of Freeport. Funeral services were held Monday in the Church of the Brethren with Rev. H. F. Richards officiating. Burial was in Lanark cemetery.
Announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Mary M Doty of Savanna to Alyson H Frederick of Lanark. The engagement was revealed at a party at East Savanna hosted by Mrs. Arthur Weidman. Mary and Alyson are both local high school graduates with ties to Savanna and Lanark.
An election for two directors of the Carroll County Soil Conservation District is set for March 6. Incumbents whose terms expire are Charles Kessler and Wallace Williams.
