Shannon Flier Becomes Pilot After Pacific Front Service
Master Sergeant James H. Beck visits his uncle Mayor Walter Byers in Shannon after 22 months in the southwest Pacific. On furlough at Keesler Field he plans pilot training. Beck earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Presidential Citation, and Asiatic Pacific Theater battle stars for New Guinea and Papuan campaigns. He served as radioman gunner on a Flying Fortress and hopes to become the aircraft driver. Beck, an honor graduate of Shannon High School in 1938, enlisted July 1941, trained at Scott Field and March Field, and shipped overseas March 19, 1942. His squadron spent time in Australia and New Guinea before combat. He is son of George Beck of Polo. his mother died during his last year of high school.

Six indictments by a district federal grand jury reported last Monday afternoon before Judge Michael J. in Freeport allege violations of the selective service act. Chester Bowles as OPA administrator and Elmer Zuck of Lanark faced a separate case with a $200.42 judgment settled on stipulation. Zuck allegedly sold corn above the ceiling price. the $209.42 compromise settled all penalties. Cases set for trial April 17 include U. S. vs. Kenneth Seisler.

Former Lanark Resident Dies In Akron Ohio
Mrs. Allen Martin 40 formerly Helen Burkholder of Lanark died Thursday evening in an Akron hospital where she had lived. She was born January 4, 1904 near Lanark and is survived by her husband Allen Martin and four brothers Ernest Earl Ralph near Lanark and Glenn of Freeport. Funeral services were held Monday in the Church of the Brethren with Rev. H. F. Richards officiating. Burial was in Lanark cemetery.
