4-H Foods Committee Plans County Training and Show
The county 4-H Foods Committee at Mrs. Orville Koser's Savanna home will meet January 21 with members Mines Daryl Rocka fellow Palmer Dauphin George Miller Francis Eckel Jean Eaton and Bonnie Koser to plan the February training school and the June 29 30 foods show. Last year 173 youths enrolled produced 8293 foods dishes and 1941 meals canned 783 quarts and froze 1120 packages of produce. Medals honored Charlene Flack Karen Wirtjes Valeria Schoonhoven of Shannon Delight Siedenburg of Mt. Carroll and Carol Dauphin Ardath Flack for preservation work. Other projects include clothing room improvement babysitting photography and handicraft. Open to girls and boys ages 10 to 20.

A Carroll County Conservation Education Committee has been formed under Ed Cooney to compile data on local natural resources for teaching in public schools. The project, in cooperation with the Farm Bureau and Soil Conservation District, will cover soil water forests minerals birds wildlife and county settlement history with mimeographed materials for all grade schools. Authorities pursued Edmund Maras 30 of Warren Ohio after he escaped Friday night from a county jail in Freeport. Sightings and a photo identification followed as the search spread to Carroll County Shannon County Illinois Savanna and St Louis Missouri with a Milwaukee freight train check yielding no results. A car theft at Lanark was linked to the case and later found abandoned in St Louis as the search extended westward.
