Savannan burglary charges pile up in Savanna area cases

Richard K. Winston, 23, of Savanna, faces four new charges for the November 11 to 13 burglaries and an alleged theft from Johnson's Drug store. He remains jailed on 10,000 bond as cases are continued to January 12 with attorney John Rapp, Jr. appointed.

County Loses 75 Farmers in Year

Carroll County sees 1968 to 1969 drop from 1201 to 1126 farms as dairy herds shrink 60 to 344 and beef cattle rise to 5610 head. Feeder cattle hogs and grains shift, prompting farmers to plan changes for the 1970s and address soil fertility building and pollution concerns.

Evening Adult Education Courses Open at Sterling Township High

Sterling Township High School and Whiteside Area Vocational Center offer a wide range of evening adult classes for men and women. Registration for the second semester is January 27 and 28 from 7 to 9 PM at the Vocational Center. Classes begin the week of February 2 1970 except for Banking and You and Income Tax courses.

Carroll County Adopts New Grand Jury Selection Method

New 1969 law requires selecting every tenth name from the county voter list for the 70 member Carroll County Grand Jury. Previously, supervisors chose residents from their townships. Due to late notice, the board and State's Attorney delayed calling the jury this year.

Thomson firemen responded to a Monday call at the rural Potter residence where a small roof fire near the chimney was put out. They cut a roof opening to ensure the blaze was confined to the exterior due to no interior access to the attic.

Superintendent Howard Kennedy announces January 15 16 as exam dates with new policies. Exams last one and a half hours per course with at least one hour in the testing room. Students may be on campus only for their enrolled courses and must stay in supervised areas during unscheduled times.

New Arrival Twins and Births Reported in Thomson Area

Mr and Mrs Danny Wagen knecht welcomed a daughter Billie Jean born Monday December 29 at Savannah City Hospital weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces. Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Gene Kness of Thomson. Mr and Mrs William Wacker of rural Thomson are parents of a son born Tuesday.

Village Board Hears Brief Session and Finances

The Village Board met briefly Monday with all members present. President Joe Shutters presided as Attorney Lawrence A. Smith Jr. attended. The treasurer reported January balances: general fund 5591.66, waterworks and sewer 1009.53, motor fuel 1696.67, York Sanitary District 131.57. Shutters called the general fund in strong condition for January, noting state income tax refunds to Thomson and ongoing concerns for York Sanitary District under the new law.

Trojans set three home games including Preston and Tampico

The Varsity Trojans host Preston tonight then Scales Mound Tuesday and Tampico Saturday at home. Freshmen beat Chadwick Streaks 81 28 and the Junior Varsity won 58 50 at Chadwick. Four freshmen hit in double figures led by Schoening with 25 and Krantz 18.
