Babson Park Florida February 22 former Assistant Secretary of Labor argues against compulsory arbitration except for monopolies. He urges voluntary mediation boards with three respected figures, equal anti trust and corporate laws, and industry consolidation. He also advocates inflation awareness and tie wages to mediation decisions.
Sheriff Eber Shepherd and Savanna police report four cars ransacked Sunday evening around Indian Head tavern on route 80 north of Savanna. W A Hutchins of Freeport NL announces Glenn S Garvin as Field Scout Executive for the U S Grant Council BSA. Garvin takes duties March 1, attends National Training School in Mendham NJ returning April 17 to serve Green and Lafayette Districts. Richard Lebetsamer remains as Field Scout Executive for Stephenson Carroll JoDaviess districts. William C Morgan continues overall direction.
Mrs Caroline Hatfield 95 died February 20 at her son Roy Hatfield's Savanna home. Services were at 2:30 p m Saturday at Savanna Methodist Church with Rev Arthur C Monkman officiating. Burial followed in Savanna Cemetery. Born Caroline Mills February 10 1851 in Erie County Pennsylvania she moved to Savanna at age five. She married Benjamin Hatfield February 16 1879. Surviving are two daughters Mrs Selle Shaw Clinton Iowa and Mrs Mary Sigalus Savanna five sons Roy Frank Harvey Charles and Ralph plus a brother and many relatives.
Word came Sunday of the death of S Sgt Donald M Hayenga Shannon at the Naval Medical Center Bethesda Md 8 30 am after surgery Saturday. Hayenga enlisted in 1942 served 27 months in the Pacific and later at Cherry Point NC He was born March 10 1921 son of Everet and Helen Hayenga and lived in Shannon. Surviving are his widow Dorothy Sorenson two brothers Harold Wilbur serving in Navy two sisters Doris Barklow Edna Waegley and a grandmother Mrs C Hayenga Funeral arrangements pending arrival date
As part of the National 4-H Rally Carroll county club members plan a county rally at 7 30 p m Tuesday March 5 in Farm Bureau hall Mt Carroll All members urged to attend and bring potential members and parents Each club should present a short demo musical number or skit plus a program note also mentions a weekend visit by the Shoemakers and Slocums with family ties.

About 400 Illinois livestock farmers met in Sterling to back higher price and weight ceilings for livestock opposing OPA limits. Illinois Cattle Feeders Association, led by Elmer Buffington, warned most marketable cattle could leave farms within 60 days, citing corn quality and rising costs. A parliamentary report claimed hog disappearances surged in 1945, with nonfederally inspected losses exceeding slaughter. Speakers urged a strong organization to oppose subsidies and ceilings via aggressive tactics.

Straitt a Savanna High School graduate and ordnance depot worker.
The Carroll county soil conservation district will elect directors at a meeting Monday in Farm Bureau hall, Mt Carroll. The Paul Daehler family is moving from a farm northwest of Lanark to the Seyfarth farm about three miles northeast of Mt Carroll, Mt Carroll Rt 4.
The Carroll County Red Cross Chapter begins its 1946 fund drive on March 1 with local quotas for Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Lanark, Milledgeville, Shannon, Chadwick, and Thomson. The drive supports peacetime Red Cross services for veterans, hospitals, disaster relief, and community programs, aiming to sustain and expand long standing peace time efforts.
P J Caron, formerly of Rochelle, buys the North Main Savanna Chevrolet garage from Kuchler Motor Co. Mrs Caron will handle the books while Harold Atherton becomes head mechanic and partsman with his brother John also on the staff. A redecorated interior awaits completion as the Carons invite the public to visit.
Fidelity Life Association of Fulton celebrated its 50th anniversary with an open house on Monday February 25 drawing guests from distant states including Texas and Minnesota. Ed M Warren president of Central National Bank Rockford spoke praising the association. a senior award for Fulton Community High School was presented for character scholarship leadership and service. The sales force met at the Hotel Lafayette Clinton on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tentative plans for a Carroll County American Legion initiation of new members were discussed at the Chadwick meeting of the Carroll County Council. Initiation is slated for the council's March meeting. Commander Oliver Emnyre said the opening event will allow the public to learn more about the Legion's purpose.
Chadwick grade school eagers won two titles and Mt Carroll Grades claimed the third in the Carroll County grade school basketball finals at Chadwick gym. Chadwick Midgets and Lightweights beat Milledgeville. Mt Carroll Heavyweights edged Milledgeville for the crown.
In a noon Saturday ceremony on February 23, Miss Jean Hummel, daughter of Roy and Mrs Hummel of Savanna, wed James Imel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Imel of Mt. Carroll, at the bride’s sister's Lanark home with Rev. Merle Hawbecker officiating. The couple plans to live near Mt. Carroll with Imel’s parents while he helps on the family farm.

T. F. Shultz the village marshal of Chadwick dies of a heart attack. The 13th district board of the Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs meets in Polo at 9:40 a.m. with reports from state and district chairs. Mrs. Keck of Freeport reviews the Chicago board meeting and district reports on subscriptions and projects as county presidents gather after lunch. Tentative convention plans will be submitted for a Freeport meeting on April 26.
Shannon high school defeated Chadwick high 34 to 27 to claim the district title and earn a regional opener against Mt. Carroll in Mt. Carroll this week. Rodermel led Shannon with 123 points and Brown topped Chadwick with 123 points.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars hosts a free dance at its Savanna clubhouse on Tuesday evening March 5 inviting all veterans and their wives mothers and sweethearts to attend.
Thomas F. Shultz 74 longtime Chadwick village marshal died suddenly of a heart attack at home. The funeral was held Tuesday at Hope Evangelical church with Chadwick Lodge A F and A M members assisting. Burial followed in Chadwick cemetery. He helped organize the Carroll County Independent Telephone Co and served as its manager. He also ran a Chadwick garage and later was game warden and constable. He leaves a widow and a son with two grandchildren.
Morrison high defeated Fulton cagers 56 to 35 and Savanna trampled Elizabeth 44 to 29 Tuesday night in the regional high school tournament opener in Mt Carroll.
