Babson Park Florida February 15. The article urges small and large businessmen to build cash and inventory reserves during inflation and warns wage workers to save and upskill. It stresses spiritual reserves and recalls Jesus Sermon on the Mount.
Chadwick residents recount a weekend of gatherings as Mr. and Mrs. Homer Geison and family from Morrison along with the Bogotts and Donna Dee Milledgeville joined Mr. and Mrs. Robert Geison and Ronnie, and the Schreiners with Darla to celebrate wedding anniversaries. Other guests included Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Mest Carmen of East Moline, Orval Schreiner of Mt. Carroll, Frank Hawkins and Tony, and Harve Schreiner hosts. Kenneth Hartman of Freeport visited his grandparents H. P. Hartman, while Lee Emyre of Chicago joined W. H. Taylor for a dinner, and George Knoess and Mrs. Rath attended Sunday evening at Henry Schleuning’s.
The Carroll Service Company annual meeting is set for Saturday at the Mr Carroll high school gym. Principal speaker John Strohm Prairie Farmer managing editor will discuss world journalism and agriculture. T L Davis Illinois Farm Supply will also speak on soil testing and farm topics. Morning reports from officers and the manager will be followed by entertainment and a noon box luncheon. Patronage refunds will be distributed to member patrons at the close.
York Community high of Thom son meets Shannon high school in the opening Shannon district basketball tournament game tonight. Chadwick faces Han over in the second contest. First game at 7 30 p m second at 8 30 p m finals Friday night determine champion and Mt Carroll regional berth. Woody Fulk erson and Bill Cregan of Freeport oversee.
N. V. Lateer field supervisor of the emergency crop and feed loan office will be at the Production Credit Association office in Mt. Carroll today February 21 from 9 to 11 a m to accept loan applications for crops or livestock feed. Applications for loans in this county are also taken by Mrs Lula M Ross at the PCA office in Mt Carroll. Farmers may write to Mr Lateer Box 26 Galesburg Ill for more information.
Richard Weidman 17 of Savanna was hospitalized Saturday with a crushed chest and multiple lacerations after his light truck collided with a stock truck on Chicago Avenue. John Tracy 14 and Dorothy Pollock 15 were treated for minor injuries and released. Victor Tracy 15 was not hurt. The stock truck driver Merle Gillogly of Miles Indiana escaped injury. Police say Weidman lost control. Gillogly said the light truck came on the wrong side of the street.
Max Ellert of Clinton Iowa purchases the Ralph Boerema farm southeast of Thomson and relocates there. The Boerema family moves to 1126 14th Ave Fulton. Mr Boerema reports his recent auction produced excellent results. Sale advertised in the Review.
Mr and Mrs Jack Brooks of Sabula Iowa received notice February 14 of the accidental death of their only son Tom Linton Brooks in New York. A firing by a handgun in their apartment caused the fatal shooting. Tom, known for tent theatre acts in the territory, had served two years in the merchant marine and planned to return home next month to rejoin the show business.
Court notices report marriage licenses issued by county clerk W M Nipe listing six couples from Mt Carroll Freeport Winfield Milledgeville Sterling and Lanark. Four divorce decrees granted in Carroll circuit court on Feb 13 by Judge Leon A Zick. A motion by Savanna attorney to strike a complaint in a Coburn suit sustained with 30 days to amend. County Judge O M Grove returns after emergency surgery in Freeport hospital.
Circuit Clerk Gordon B. R. Smith reported honorable discharges filed this past week for numerous servicemen from Chadwick, Lanark, Mt. Carroll, Savanna, Shannon, Masshach, Maywood, Moline, LaCrosse, Linn Creek, Pittsfield and other towns. Names include 1st Lt. John G. Magill, Sgt. Orval Schreiner, Pvt. Riley Temple, Robert B. Lewis, Leighton Phillips, Milford Miller, Reuben Leitner Jr., Luverta Neuscheanger, Harold Foltz, Harold Edwards, William Hartman, John Whitmer, Robert Hockman, Durand Eaton, Gervace Law, George Whyte, George Lundy, LeRoy Bell, Vernon Conley, Vernon Sack, and others.
A Navy Recruiting Station representative from Rock Island Illinois will be at the Fulton Post Office on Friday March 1 1946 at 1 00 p m to interview young men interested in enlisting in the U S Navy Enlistments are open to ages 17 to 30 with 2 3 4 or 6 year terms Young men 17 may enlist for 2 3 or minority years Minority serves until the day before the 21st birthday G I Bill of Rights accrues after this enlistment Free postage through December 31 1947 Family allowance benefits continue for the duration of the enlistment
Pvt LaVern Weber of Fort Sheridan Miss Clement of Freeport and Mrs H F Weber were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Joseph P Weber.
Fishing licenses for 1946 season arrived Wednesday at the office of Mrs. Kate Cole Whitney Thomson village clerk. Included are Resident Hook and Line Trot Line Hoop Net Jaiket Trap 100 yard Seine Tram mel Net Non-Resident Hook and Line and 10 day Non-Resident Hook and Line licenses.
Chadwick Midgets and Lightweights won opening round games on Monday as Lanark and Mt. Carroll also claimed wins in various classes. Milledgeville swept the second round with wins in all three divisions, earning finals Monday Feb 25 at 7 p.m. plus matchups against Chadwick and Mt. Carroll.
Wives and relatives of Legionnaires are urged to attend a meeting tonight at the Oliver Etnyre home in Chadwick to organize a local American Legion auxiliary unit. Mrs. C. F. Moon will lead as deputy organizer. A Carroll County Council meeting also occurs in Chadwick Legion hall alongside the post gathering.
Livestock feeders from northwest Illinois plan a meeting February 22 at the Coliseum in Sterling DL. Elmer Buffington of Milledgeville will chair under the Illinois Cattle Feeders Association. The session opens at 7 20 p m with speakers Mark Pickell of Chicago and C B Watson of De Kalb. The group will discuss price uncertainty and post June 30 subsidies and the best stance toward current government proposals.
Shannon high school defeated Milledgeville high 44 to 26 on Shannon floor to win the 1945-446 basketball championship of the Carroll County Conference. Lanark high lost to Oregon 53 to 36 in a non conference game. Mt. Carroll high beat Mt. Morris 42 to 365.
Homer UH Nicholas a 74 year old resident of Mill edgeville died early Monday in a Rockford hospital after illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Milledgeville Methodist church with burial in Bethel cemetery. Surviving are his wife a son Lyle Nicholas a daughter Mrs Ralph Milrey a grandson and two sisters and two brothers. He operated a garage and auto sales business in Milledgeville for many years.
Mrs Eugene Mellnay 77 died at 5 p m Friday Feb 15 at her home north of Milledgeville Funeral services were held 1 30 p m Monday at the Harry Buffington home east of Milledgeville with the Rev Fred Meyer pastor of the Brick church of the United Brethren officiating Burial was in Brookville She was born Feb 2 1860 at Brookville and married Eugene McIlroy on Apr 23 1891 Surviving are her husband a daughter Mrs Harry Buffington and four sons Clifford Freeport Clarence Dixon Roscoe Daytona Beach Fla and Dewey Atlanta Ga
Ronald Venhuizen the two month old son of Mr and Mrs Fred Venhuizen of Milledgeville died Thursday morning February 14 at home. Born December 14 1945 he was laid to rest at Grove Hill Morrison after services at Reynolds funeral home with Rev Harry L Brower officiating. Casket bearers were uncles Peter Thomas William and Ted Venhuizen. Surviving are the parents one brother Roger the paternal grandmother Mrs Grace Venhuizen and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs John Vandermyde of Minneapolis Minnesota.
Mrs Will Way hosted a group of ladies at her home on a Wednesday to honor the 89th birthday of her mother Mrs Phila Shrader born February 13 1857 in Mt Carroll. Guests included Mrs Harve Zugs chwerdt Mrs John Geist Mrs T F Shultz Mrs Charles Way Mrs Elizabeth Senneff Mrs W J Quest and daughter Mary and Mrs O H Rahn.
Thirty seven schools enter Rochelle events with over 600 students in district music contests on March 2 and April 6. Solo and ensemble contests open the program with seven events across morning and afternoon sessions directed by C A Hill and Willard Gieske of Rochelle High School. Participating schools include Amboy Ashton Belvidere Big Rock Byron Capron Chadwick Compton Dakota Forreston Franklin Grove Freeport Fulton Galena Hanover Hinckley Lanark Leaf River Lee Center Lena Morrison Mt. February 28 is the final deadline to file for Dairy Feed payments under the 1946 Agricultural Conservation Program. Carroll County AAA urges milk or cream sales evidence be mailed to the AAA office. applications may be mailed only after evidence is received. About 86 percent of county farmers have signed 1946 Farm Plans.
Carroll county taxpayers face a total tax bill of 783 099 42 for the 1945 assessment, up 429 72 from 1944. Increases majorly stem from district school levies and highway funding, with salaries for teachers cited as a key factor in school tax growth. York township shows a decrease of about 4 000 due to reduced township levies, while railroads and corporations add 154 404 28 and 195 888 28 respectively to total collections.
York Community cagers lost to Lanark 47 to 33 on Lanark's floor. Lanark reserves won 57 to 56 in the preliminary. Wise led Lanark with 16 points while Robinson Mattie and Bull paced York with nine and eight. Score by quarters shows Lanark domination.
Miss Mice Norvalee Tuttle and Robert W. Swingley were married at Savanna Methodist Church on Saturday February 16. Rev. Arthur C. Monkman officiated the double ring service with attendants Vernon Krahn and his wife. The bride, Stockton High School graduate, has worked as a Milwaukee Road clerk. the groom, Savanna High School graduate, recently discharged from the Army Air Force and employed at the Savanna ordnance depot. Saturday evening callers included Reynold Lang, Arnold Prowant, Donald Hartman and Chuck Gordon families.
Mr and Mrs Edward Aude and Barbara Ann stay with his parents Mr and Mrs Herman Aude Sr near Coleta. Roy Weber of Freeport, Mrs H F Weber, Albert Adolph, Richard Adolph, Spurgeon Harter Jr, Elmer Weber and families join Mr and Mrs Joseph Weber for Monday evening hospitality. Lucinda Gipe visits Mrs Bess Humbert on Sunday afternoon.
