Houzenga Takes Third in FFA Public Speaking Contest

Steve Houzenga son of Mr and Mrs James Houzenga of Thomson placed third in the Section II FFA Public Speaking Contest held at Ashton on February 19. His speech titled The Farmers Place In Todays Agriculture. Bart Besse of Erie won first for Farming in the Future with James Rath of Lanark second for Preserve the Family Farm. Section III includes 19 schools in Carroll Whiteside and Lee counties.

Cedarettes Plan Share the Fun Act Practices

The Cedarettes 4-H Club met February 24 at the Legion to discuss the Share-the-Fun act. Members chosen for the act will practice March 1 8 and 22 from 10 to 12 at the Legion Hall, with judging at Chadwick High School on March 28. They also consider the April public speaking contest and June State 4-H Club Week.

Carroll Service Sets Annual Meet

The Carroll Service Company holds its annual shareholder and member meeting at Mt. Carroll High School on Saturday March 1 starting 10 45 am. Dr Carl S Winters of Oak Park Illinois will present the main message. Mayor Timothy Hays of Whoopup Missouri will also speak. Board elections and officer reports will be presented with a noon tree lunch.

Absentee rate at Thomson school declines somewhat this week yet remains above normal. Flu bugs appear to be moving beyond the building as residents across the community report illnesses of various flu forms.

Funeral services held for Glen Wilt 71 Thomson native

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Fay-Seesser in Fulton for Glen F. Wilt 71 a former Thomson resident who died Friday in Sarasota Florida The Rev Emer Grafft officiated with burial in National cemetery Rock Island Wilt a World War I Army veteran was born near Thomson April 29 1897 He had lived in Chicago Rockford and Detroit before retiring to Sarasota Survivors include his wife Florence Hassman two sons Paul V Wilt and Dee L Wilt seven grandchildren and a brother Paul K Wilt He was preceded in death by his parents a granddaughter and a daughter Sandy of Jessup Md Funeral party arrived Monday and spent time in the home of Paul V Wilt in Thomson.

The Sophomore class hosts a bake sale Saturday March 1 from 11 to 1 at the Thomson fire station. Proceeds support class activities with breads pies candies cakes and cookies on sale.

Residential Changes in Local Transfers

Mr and Mrs Larry Grim sold their home to Mr and Mrs Eugene Muur of Fulton and plan to move Saturday. The Grims bought a home in Camanche Iowa. The Muurs have three sons. Mr and Mrs Donald Schoening sold their farm east of Thomson to Mrs Robert Johnson and bought the Hoff home in Thomson. The Schoenings expect to move in several weeks.

All Conference Team Named After Final Week Game

The four trophies were presented to the teams and coaches after the final game Monday by Howard L Kennedy superintendent of the Thomson schools. For the first time Carroll County conference coaches selected an all conference team with players from Lanark Mount Carroll Shannon Chadwick Milledgeville and Thomson listed.

The FHA held a February 6 meeting with a spaghetti cheesecake salad meal. A guest speaker from India, a Clinton Job Corps guidance director, spoke on her country’s customs and history. Don Robinson and Charlene Temple were named the winning King and Queen candidates for the upcoming Sweetheart Swirl.

57 Adult Students Desire Diplomas

After planning and registration Sterling Area Evening High School opened well. Fifty-seven of about 370 registered students attend classes for high school credit and hope to earn diplomas. Ages span eighteen to fifty-three, with most between twenty and thirty. The program will be offered again this fall.

SGT David Bealer Deploys to Germany for Three Years

T Sgt David Bealer departed Saturday for McGuire AFB New Jersey and flew to Weisbaden West Germany to be stationed for three years. He traveled with Mrs Bealer and their three children who visited Thomson relatives after arriving February 16 from Sunset Utah. Mrs Bealer is Geraldine Smith daughter of Lloyd Smith of Thomson. The Bealers remain with Mrs Eslinger awaiting port call. Bealer is brother of Mrs Wayne Drake of Thomson.

York Township Election Set For April 1 1969 Nominees

York Township voters will choose a town clerk assessor and three town board auditors plus three library trustees. Incumbents seek re election except library seats for Heusinkveld and Strauch. A second ballot asks for gravel tax funding road maintenance and a rate increase from .125 to .33 percent for five years, with wording causing potential confusion.

Milledgeville comeback stuns Trojans 56 54 at home

The Fresh Soph overcame a first-half deficit to edge Milledgeville 56 to 54 as Ed Bielema 20 free throws in the final minute led the Trojans. Don Robinson then stole a late miss and hit a 20 footer with one second left for the win. Robinson 26 Groharing 12 Hill 11 led scoring. St. Ores and Manning added the late effort. The varsity fell 73 72 in a tense finish with Mintke making a late second free throw.

Top honors for February go to Anna Vene ma and Jeanette Dykema with weekly queens Isadore Senneff JoAnn Badtke Delores Prins and Jeanette Dyke ma. The Chapter started a new contest pitting Rowdy Reds against Gorgeous Greens amid reports of one team lagging behind possibly due to team size.

Mr and Mrs George Plog of Thomson celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary with an open house March 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. at their son James home in Milledgeville. Married March 1 1919 in Rock Island they later lived in Milledgeville then Thomson. The Thomson Woman's Club held its annual guest night potluck at the Thomson Community Church on February 6. Decorations featured a valentine theme by hostesses. Door prize was won by Mrs. Ruby Hill and Mrs. Lavella Diehl. David Murray of Sterling, Illinois spoke on Estate Planning. Mrs. Marion Wheeler presided as president and the club voted to order more Illinois placemats.
