Economic experts warn meat costs rise this year with bigger butcher bills and higher hog and steer prices. Yet some households offset by stored meat while legislators consider sheriff radio funds and corn marketing quotas amid wartime policy debates.
Regional tournament schedule announced for Mount Carroll High School gym. March 5 features Mount Carroll vs district runner up and Savanna vs Lanark. March 8 shows Morrison vs district winner and Fulton vs Forreston with later rounds March 7 and 8 leading to consolation and championship games. Officials Milton S Vaughn of Rockford and Milton Death of Forreston assigned to the event. Vaughn also officiated the state finals in Champaign last year.
Lieutenant George Swanson of Savanna reported to Roberts at San Miguel California for his tour of duty. He is a member of the army reserve corps in the adjutant general's department and was among three reserve officers in northern Illinois called into service this week.
Mr and Mrs Paul Daehler hosted a group of friends from the deaf school district at the Center School Friday evening. The visitors presented the Daehlers with many gifts for their new home.
Mount Carroll Horsemen announce a Mardi Gras dance Saturday night March 1 in the Farm Bureau auditorium at the county seat. Esposito's orchestra will play and Miss Esposito will perform folk numbers. The committee secured a skilled square dance caller and invites all to join in several square dance segments. Attendees may dress in Mardi Gras attire or fun costumes.
Mrs. Alva R. Dry of Freeport is the 13th district candidate for the vice presidency of the northern region of the Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs. She has held multiple roles in the Freeport Woman's Club and the 13th district, chairs state federation committees, and serves on IFWC boards. She belongs to several societies and churches and leads the Past District Presidents group.
A batch of 120 youths ages 17 to 24 will arrive March 1 at the NYA resident work center near Savanna for housing training and study. Construction at the north end of Mississippi Palisades State Park is nearly finished. Enrollees may join programs at Savanna Ordnance depot with pay of 20 dollars monthly offset by living costs.
In Mt Carroll officials report 50 more lockers have been installed in the cold storage locker tank, bringing the total to 240. More than 200 are said to be sealed and the remainder expected to be taken within a few days.
The March term of circuit court in Carroll County opens Monday March 3 with Judge Harry E Wheat presiding. Four new criminal cases seven common law actions and five chancery matters fill the docket including divorces foreclosures and appeals. Grand jury panel members from several townships are summoned for service.

Local draft board sent 21 questionnaires Monday to 1A registrants numbered 201 to 220 and 20 more on Wednesday. One inductee from Feb 20, Robert Martin of Lanark, failed the physical. Savanna reports the deaths of Mrs. Caroline Atkins 75 and Miss Mary DeLaVergne 72 both at their Savanna residences. Atkins born 1886 in McGregor Iowa, survived by three sons and three daughters with 39 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. DeLaVergne died of a heart ailment. funeral planned at home with burial in Savanna cemetery.
Shannon grade school cagers defeated Chadwick Tuesday evening at Mt. Carroll to win the county championship. Mt. Carroll took third by defeating Lanark. Chadwick beat Milledgeville in the first round and Lanark in the semi finals to reach the final. Mt. Carroll beat Chestnut Park of Savanna in the first round and then lost to Shannon in the semi finals.
At the annual meeting of the American Association of Junior Colleges in Chicago Frances Shimer college Mt Carroll is represented by Albin C. Bro president Miss A Beth Hostetter registrar Miss Ruby Baxter director of the lower division Miss Lois Angleman librarian and George E Hoffman director of public relations.
Savanna high school closed its home season with a 25 21 loss to Fulton after a hard fought battle. Sikkema and Tremayne led Fulton scorers while Johnson Cravatta and Nehrkorn scored for Savanna. Fulton reserves defeated Savanna 41 1 in a preliminary.
Chadwick Community High School earns the league crown as the first non Mt Carroll team to win since the conference began. Lanark defeats Chadwick 34 31 in the final week while Shannon takes second place with a 39 16 win over county seat. Mt Carroll finishes third with Lanark fourth and Thomson fifth. Thomson and Lanark look to the upcoming tournaments.
Lanark high school scored a 21-12 first half surge and held on for a 48-38 victory over Lena. D Keever led Lanark with 16 points, G Keever 12, Aurand 10, Merchant 5, while Lena’s Howard led scorers with 11. Lena reserves won 26-12.
The 129th infantry band of Mt. Morris will give a farewell concert in Mt. Morris on March 10 before entrainment for Camp Forrest Tennessee for a year of active duty. The band draws members from northern Illinois including Savanna Mt Carroll Chadwick and other towns. Induction into federal service is set for March 5 with the unit likely staying in Mt Morris about ten days for transport arrangements of the 38rd division to Camp Forrest.
Chadwick High wins the county basketball title as Shannon’s team finishes runner up in the final game. Mt Carroll hosts regional tourney with Elizabeth as runner up. district competition continues. Local firemen attend Sterling meeting as Blackhawk group expands activities. Draft board distributes questionnaires and one applicant is rejected by the army.
More than 100 members and friends of the Blackhawk Fire Fighter s Association attended a Sterling meeting at the city hall. Chief Connell Nicol of Sterling spoke with Commissioner William Jacob and Mayor Sam Feigley in welcoming visitors. Two reels on electrical fire hazards were shown and a demonstration followed. A lunch at Moose hall preceded noting rapid membership growth and new admissions. Members from Whiteside Carroll Lee and Ogle counties joined from Savanna Lanark Mt Carroll Milledgeville Morrison Tampico Prophetstown Amboy Mt Morris Polo Oregon and Forreston.
A Kane county grand jury indicted Robert Adams of Lanark and William Laird of Dundee on murder charges tied to the fatal beating of an inmate at the state training school for boys in St. Charles. Both men, employed at the institution, were ordered held without bail and arraigned Tuesday.
Four-H club leaders of Carroll county met Wednesday evening in Mt Carroll to fix dates and discuss plans for various 4-H meetings during the coming year.
Chadwick and York County high schools will jointly hire an agriculture teacher for the coming year. John Rosenberg of Thomson will split his time between Chadwick and Thomson, directing 4-H work and starting an ag program July 1 under the Smith Hughes act. Two Chadwick classes will serve different grade levels, with state and federal funding sharing the salary.
Mount Carroll native Col Walter Bender 54 was executive at Langley Field Virginia. He is transferred to Fort Wright Spokane after five years at Langley and a long military career from Troop K Sixth Cavalry to air corps officer. A marriage license was issued in Maquoketa Iowa to Marshal Bock and Helen Wabben both of Mount Carroll.
