Miss Lucinda Lee Baker 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs Jake Baker of Thomson, senior at York community high school, receives the DAR good citizens award for 1961 62. She served as librarian in sophomore year dramatics in junior and senior years chorus two years FHA three years GAA one year. She wrote for the Yorkster and Trojan Topics one year each. An above average student she plans nursing training after graduation.
News brief notes plans to start a Thomson Brownie Scout troop for girls ages seven to nine. Two organizing meetings were held February 2 in Ruby Hill’s home and February 16 in Janis Wilt’s home with participants including Mrs Poffenberod, Mr Carroll, Joan McCarthy, Joyce Dykstra, Dianna Marken, Doris Green, Mary Temple and others. The group aims to launch in March.
The Golden Rule class of the Baptist church met Wednesday evening in the church basement with 12 members present. Mrs. Robert Carroll led the program, reading several short stories and ms, followed by group singing. Afterward, refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Holland and Mrs. Helen Brenneman.
Thomson News reports the Carroll County American Legion council will meet at Shannon Legion hall on Monday February 26 at 8 PM. The Heart Fund drive is scheduled for Sunday February 25 with solicitors meeting at the school cafeteria at 2 PM. About thirty members of the St. Ores family gathered at the Legion hall in Thomson for a farewell Sunday noon event honoring Mr. and Mrs. Dan Sack of Clinton who sold their home and plan to move to Tucson Arizona on March 5 for health reasons. Family members from Freeport Davenport Port Byron Fulton Clinton and others attended and presented a gift.
Connie Houzenga daughter of Mr and Mrs Jake Houzenga of Fulton RFD 1 and Raymond Wiebenga son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Wiebenga of 1312 14th Ave Fulton were married Friday evening at eight oclock at Valley Reformed church in Fulton. Rev Jack Van Heest officiated in the presence of immediate families. A reception for 75 followed in the church parlors with mint green and lavender decor. The couple will reside at an apartment on 11th Ave Fulton after a short wedding trip.

Singers performed Grandfathers Clock Working On the Railroad In the Evening by the Moonlight Home on the Range Peace in the Valley and Beautiful Light. The group sang God be with you till we meet again. A reading featured The Old Family Album worn dress 125 years old. The author and Clifford Ritchie enjoyed a Key Largo trip with A A Nicols Fred Withhart and Savanna friends and deep sea fishing including a large shark catch.
L E Kindle of Rt 4 Sterling died at 12 15 AM Monday at Community General hospital. Born July 5 1879 in Reynolds County Mo he was married to Gertie Smith April 16 1901 in Leeper Mo. He had farmed in Hopins Township 41 years and lived in Sterling 35 years. Survived by wife two daughters Mrs Carmal Hey and Mrs John Myra Sloan two sons Vernon and Le Roy Kindle one brother William Kindle nine grandchildren ten great grandchildren. Funeral 1 30 PM Wednesday at Melvin Funeral Home Rev Romaine Tenney Trinity EUB officiating burial Riverside Cemetery.
Plans for the annual parent teacher reporting day conference on Wednesday March 7. Student grades will be recorded on the report card only in the presence of the parent. If the parent fails to attend, no grade will appear. Appointments available 2:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 9:15 PM. School dismisses at 2:15 PM.
Open house Sunday afternoon February 11 honored Mr and Mrs Terry Elliott who wed January 27 in Platteville Wisconsin. Host parents Richard McGinty served cake coffee and refreshments while guests from Thomson Fulton Clinton Morrison Rockford Davenport and Madison Wisconsin attended. A B Roger Eslinger completed basic training in Texas and moved to an electrical repair school at Chanute AFB Illinois.
Freeport hosts a music contest next Saturday with solo entries from Baritone horn Oval Mary Gruber with Terry Kness and others. Evelyn Prins Jill Sloan and Evelyn Wilt accompany several acts. Drivers include Paul Wilt John Sloan and the music teacher Mr Larson.
Mrs Wayne Ashby was honored at a birthday dinner Saturday evening hosted by Mr and Mrs Lyle Greeley. Attending were Mr and Mrs Wayne Ashby, Mr and Mrs Hal Ashby, and Mr and Mrs Carl Petersen. The note lists daily menu items from Monday February 26 through Friday March 2 including Wiener s kraut spaghetti and hamburger Bar-B-Que sandwiches tuna on toast and assorted sides with milk.

Thomson Woman's club announces a walking blood bank typing event on Thursday March 1 at 7 30 PM in the school cafeteria. Donors aged 21 to 50 will be listed with blood types and phone numbers for use in emergencies. Volunteers are urged to attend even if previously registered.
The 500 club met at Bernadette Kustes home in Fulton with prizes awarded to Gertrude Kustes May Kustes Clara Andring and Amy Lewis. The Womens club set March 1 at 8 PM for a meeting with exchange student Aurora Jeres from the Philippines as the speaker.
Den Number 3 of the Cub Scouts changed its meeting time from Saturday to Tuesday at 4 PM. The adjustment affects all members and may alter attendance plans.
The Savanna Womans club invites the Thomson Womans club to a past presidents tea on Friday March 2 at 2 o'clock. The 13th District President Mrs Milton Vaupel will speak. Anyone planning to attend may call Margaret Murray by Feb 27.
Mrs Wayne Drake and children were Friday evening guests of Mr and Mrs Harry Wilkinson. Fulton visitors Gene Diephuis Jerry Brinkman attended a toboggan party at Harold Stresky home in Clinton Saturday. Alfred Workman family spent Tuesday with Andrew Houzenga parents. Edwin Balk Fulton guests at Feldt home. James Dykema visited Morrison parents Shipma Wednesday. John Krahn spent a few days in Milwaukee on business.
The Mt. Carroll Insurance Agency Inc. held its seventh annual meeting at its new office on N. Main and Rapp St. Directors for 1962 are Do. E. Dingman, Darwin Carter, Tyle Law, Wallace Williams, Glen Teeter, Ernest Smith and Frank Lister. Officers named: C. E. Dingman president, Darwin Carter vice president, Alberta Johnson secretary and treasurer, Herbert Richter manager. The agency represents Mt. Carroll Fire Insurance and writes general insurance.
The community shares a series of weekend visits and hosting duties. Terry Carroll of Morrison stayed with Larry Carroll at the Robert Carroll home. Marie Crowe of Morrison visited Glendora Schade and the Dimmicks. Gayle Durward, in nurse training at Freeport Memorial, spent time with her parents. Several families hosted guests including the Pessmans, Buikemas, Marken, Dykstras, Haas, Elliott, Erickser, Bielema, Miller, Bolhaus, Brondyke, and Marilyn Gordon during various weekend gatherings.
