State police report 4 of 9599 January test takers failed completely for licenses. 681 were given restricted licenses. Observers wonder how many previously licensed drivers should have been restricted or retested, a check perhaps only after accidents occur.
Six colored CCC enrollees at Mt. Carroll were discharged after disorderly conduct on a Milwaukee train from Chicago. Two guards were fired for letting them enter the camp commissary. All eight youths were sent home by train from Savanna Wednesday night.
County clerk figures show Lima township 1939 tax bill at 13 629.16 versus 13 500.04 in 1938. The comparison lists 1939 and 1938 amounts for County, Town, Road and Bridge, and various districts, indicating general increases across several levies.
The total tax to be collected in Carroll County for 1939 is 672106.42, up about 16000 from 1938. County taxes rise to 119082.13 while town, corporations, road and bridge, school and library taxes shift modestly.
January births in Carroll County total fourteen with seven boys and seven girls. Twenty one people died, including a one day old infant in Savanna and a year old infant in Chadwick. The oldest death was 90 year old Reuben Stenner of Savanna.
At a Carroll County Farm Bureau gathering last week Naaman Diehl was reelected president and Harve Good named vice president. John Richter was re elected secretary and Charles Gordon treasurer. Directors also chose an organization committee to assist Ralph Fahrney with joining John Henze Shannon Flickinger Lanark and Carl G Chadwick.

County clerk filing deadline passes with no Democratic candidates for county offices. Only Democrat in race is Robert L. Morris of Lanark for senatorial district committeeman. Republican slate includes Brearton Turnbaugh Smith for state's attorney and Schreiter Gelwicks for coroner and circuit clerk respectively. Additional precinct committeemen listed for both parties.
Leaders in soil work and all farmers and businessmen are invited to a meeting in Mt. Carroll courthouse next Tuesday February 27 at 10 a.m. The session will be led by H. A. DeWerff University of Illinois extension soils specialist.
The Ryan Plumbing and Heating of Davenport submitted the low bid of 14859 dollars for a steam generating plant at the Savanna Ordnance depot. Bids opened Friday. award expected this week with 120 day completion. The system will supply steam to heat the plant and for processing.
The week’s news includes a WPA storm sewer project planned for Savanna, no Democratic nominations filed for county offices, only one Republican contest, and eight CCC enrollees discharged from Camp Carroll for disorderly conduct on a train.
Frances Shimer Junior College in Mt Carroll announces the first aerial student tour for women. Two American Airlines shops will charter flights from Chicago to Washington and New York with stops in Indianapolis Detroit and Buffalo and a possible Annapolis side trip. Chaperone Miss Velma Maul former chief stewardess with miles flown leads the group.
A Carroll County Legion meeting convened in Milledgeville town hall on Thursday evening. Mt. Morris commander Charles Edson from the 13th district spoke, and refreshments were served to 21 members from Savanna Shannon Mt. Carroll and Milledgeville.
Preston Prairie reports on local residents with brief notes: Sarah Liberton turned 85 on February 13, while Jesse Colehour of Lakeland Florida reports warm weather and garden planting on February 10. James Buswell visited Salem, and Mrs. Howard Petty spent a day in Freeport. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor of Rockford were in town with friends.
Sheriff Ray R. Westfall attended the Illinois Sheriffs association convention in Rockford last Thursday. He was among 19 Republican sheriffs present while only two Democratic sheriffs attended.

A forum at 7 30 p m tomorrow February 23 at the Mt Carroll community house will explore Influence of the European War on Farming, Distribution and Business. Farm Adviser M P Roske announced Prof H A Working of University of Illinois will lead the discussion. Farmers bankers and professionals are invited to attend and participate.
Judge Franklin J. Stransky of Ca roll county marketed a drove of 60 steers from his Lanark area farm in Tuesday trading at the Chicago Stock Yards. The cattle averaged 1397 pounds and sold straight at 10.90 dollars per cwt. Stransky and farm manager Adam Heizne accompanied the shipment to supervise the sale.
