Babson Park Florida February 14 1946 discusses labor unrest and revolutionary inventions post World War II. It cites the importance of production and predicts electrified storage and future industrial shifts, urging diversification and faith in scientists and preachers over politics.
Chicago's Quartermaster Depot at 1819 W Pershing Rd begins handling remains of World War II dead to be returned for final burial. Col J N Gage says the War Department pamphlet Tell Me About My Boy is available to next of kin. Lt Col Carroll J Grinnell coordinates distribution of Pacific and Atlantic area remains to Illinois Minnesota Wisconsin Indiana Michigan Iowa North Dakota South Dakota. Mr and Mrs Vernon Rawlins of Morrison visited H L Rawlins.
Miss Bertha Smith and Miss Ruth Nehrkorn report Carroll county March of Dimes receipts total 5263.45, covering January returns. They will break the sum down by townships after all returns arrive, noting prior $840.52 from last fall's polio drive with town contributions listed.

At about midnight Saturday two cars collided in front of Hugh Wilson residence on Route 78 near Frances Shimer college Ambrose Abbott of Des Moines and Arvil Kraman of Rockford suffered minor injuries Abbott was hospitalized then dismissed and Kraman treated for cuts Walter Bugenstein of Cedar Rapids escaped injury. Abbott's car flipped and slid 20 feet up an embankment before stopping on its right side. both cars were badly damaged.
Robert and Robert F. Sibley of Chadwick NL bought the registered Brown Swiss bull Mayor Betwyn 55480 from John Ingold of Monroe Wisconsin RR 5. The report comes from Fred Idtse secretary of the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association in Beloit Wisconsin.
Mount Carroll P E O Chapter sponsors a two day book fair in the old grade school gym Feb 21 and 22. Hundreds of books including new publishers editions will be displayed and for sale. Ruth Tooze of Evanston, a renowned book authority, will attend. Fair hours are 9 am to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm Friday and 9 am to 5 pm Saturday.
Carroll county poultrymen may enter the national Chicken of Tomorrow contest alongside growers from ten north central states. A flock of 50 baby chicks hatched May 4 to 10 qualifies, with prizes totaling 10,000 dollars and a 5,000 dollar grand prize in 1948. Local contact is Cliff Carpenter, president of the Institute of American Poultry Industries, Chicago. The census shows Carroll farmers earn poultry income with 586,000+ chickens and nearly 1,870,000 dozen eggs sold.
Raynes McNamara and Cate McNamara of Thomson were injured when their car collided with a Milwaukee freight train on Route 80 south of Thomson. McNamara suffered deep facial cuts and possible skull fracture and was hospitalized in Clinton Mercy Hospital. Cate had minor injuries and was released. The car was severely damaged beyond repair after swerving into the train as the freight car number 18 pulled by an eastbound engine blocked the highway. Mrs. John Ashpole travels to visit relatives in Clinton Iowa.

George W. Asay, 63, foreman of the Mt Carroll Mirror-Democrat composing room, died at 6 a m Friday February 14 in St Francis hospital Freeport after major surgery. He was born May 30 1883 in Tipton Iowa and lived in Mt Carroll since age four. He married Luva Arb in 1920 and leaves three daughters, a grandson, and a brother. Funeral was held Sunday in Mt Carroll with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Milledgeville residents Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Crom celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. A family dinner is planned at their home on Sunday February 23 with an open house from 2 30 to 5 30 p m. The couple married February 24 1897 in Sterling Illinois and have three children four grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
A state recognition meeting for volunteer 4-H club leaders in Illinois will be held Feb. 27 at the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield. Sponsored by the Illinois Agricultural Association Extension Service of the University of Illinois, Illinois Home Bureau Federation and Illinois Chain Store Council.
Chadwick's grain judging team finished fourth in the sectional grain and poultry judging contest at Dakota on Saturday February 16 with 105 contestants. Members Floyd Imel LaVerle Sturtevant Junior Brown John Janssen and Vernon Fink led the effort. Imel ranked eleventh individually. The Chadwick poultry team finished sixth with Ned Hartman Max Sturtevant Charles Aude Richard Avis and Donald Gordon.
Miss Anna Gordon, 90, lifelong Mt. Carroll resident, died Feb 15 at Caroline Mark Home. Funeral held at Mt. Carroll funeral home with Rev. Frank Countryman officiating and Oak Hill cemetery burial. Survived by two brothers and two sisters. Arnold W. Rebman, 45, Lanark, died of a heart attack in the Mt. Carroll county jail after arrest for passing a worthless check. body taken to Lanark for burial. Rebman, ill at 10:15 p.m. Friday, was found dead in a bath tub at 7 a.m. Saturday. no water in tub.
An architect with Rep. F. A. Stransky and Dr. E. C. Turner of Savanna inspected the tuberculosis sanatorium site in the upper Mississippi Palisades State Park. An architect’s drawing will be available soon. Dr. Turner serves on the planning committee.
Mr Orion Meyers and sister living on a 540 acre farm near Mt Carroll along with Roy Smith purchased the Hereford herd bull Bob Domino from Charles Demeter on Milledgeville land for 475 dollars to improve their 100 head herd. At McGrath farm Lena sale, EK V McGrath bought ten registered gifts for his farm near Andover and Eggers McGrath sold 60 head last spring’s pig crop for breeding.
Carroll County and Savanna received 56099 in state gas tax allotments in 1946 up from 4232 in 1945 as analyzed by Barcus Endred & Company Chicago. The report credits higher motor fuel receipts from postwar demand and notes Carroll County totals of 45865 and Savanna 10234 with gains of 11071 and 2706 respectively.
The Ayres and Kathryn Daviess Indoor Circus comes to Mt Carroll with two shows on Wednesday February 2H at 4 p m and 6 p m in the high school gym. Sponsored by the Women's Community club, proceeds aid the Milk Fund and other club charities.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kearnaghan of Mount Carroll celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday February 23 with visitors invited between 2 and 5 30 p m. Married February 23 1897 in the bride’s parents home north of Mount Carroll the couple farmed in Woodland township 26 years before moving to Mount Carroll in 1923. They have two daughters Mrs Wesley Sisler Mount Carroll and Mrs Elmer Weber Chadwick and two sons Homer and Donald Kearnaghan Mount Carroll.
Black Oak Grange announces a public card party and box social to be held Wednesday evening February 26 at the Grange hall in Chadwick. No admission charge for the card party. Prizes will be awarded. Lunch boxes will be auctioned after the party and lunch will be provided for non participants. Everyone is invited and asked to bring a box.
Banks and county offices will be closed Saturday February 22 for Washington's Birthday a legal holiday. Postoffice lobbies will be open during usual hours but no window service or rural mail delivery.
The Freedom Home Bureau will meet today February 20 at the home of Mrs Lloyd Kloepping. Mrs Wayne Merboth and Mrs Russell Tallman lead the Yeast Breads lesson while Mrs Isaac Decker presents Hobbies and their Values. Roll call is My Hobby with several special numbers and games.
Salem Home Bureau unit meets Tuesday February 25 at 1 30 pm with Mrs. Clayton Kaul hosting. Miss Dorothy Foottit presents homemade cleaning agents and Mrs. Charles Honberger along with Mrs. Dwight Spearman cover hobbies. Bring your hobby.
Chadwick reports many community happenings as residents hosted and visited over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Shipman welcomed guests for a dinner honoring newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Flynn. Additional gatherings included the Remreys in Zamphy, Harters in Polo, Wiersemas in Morrison, Misewicz children with Williams and Hartman kin in Freeport, and visits to the Weidman and Weber households.
Residents are asked by Legion members to donate old furniture to furnish the George Medema building space. The group seeks large tables chairs a pool table and a pop stand and will accept donations by arranging pickup or leaving items at the hall. Veterans may join at regular meetings.
Norman D. French of Thomson Illinois earned a private airplane pilot rating from the Civil Aeronautics Authority after training at the University of Illinois Institute of Aeronautics. He studied civil air regulations general aircraft servicing navigation meteorology and radio communication with 35 to 46 hours of flight time at the university airport six miles southwest of campus. The Illinois airport serves education research commercial private and military training with a large hangar and shops.
