Deaths Outnumber Births In County In January

The county reports more deaths than births for January with eight birth girls and eleven birth boys listed. Dates show multiple infant births in Savanna and surrounding towns, including names such as Jane Law Harold and Merle Martin, among others.

Release of District and Regional High School Basketball Pairings

District and regional pairings for northern Carroll County high school teams were announced. Four Carroll teams will play in the Shannon district, with three Jo Daviess squads and one from Whiteside. The other three squads enter regional play at Mt. Carroll the following week, with the Shannon district winner and runner up advancing to regionals. Shannon and Milledgeville meet in the district due to a three way tie for the conference crown, while Lanark advances directly to regionals. District games start Tuesday February 24 with Chadwick facing York Community and Milledgeville meeting Lyndon. On Wednesday February 25 Shannon plays Elizabeth and Hanover meets East Dubuque.

River to Open Early for Traffic

River traffic will begin earlier than planned this spring with pools 20 and 21 raised in the last week of the month and pools 16 to 18 starting in March. Pool 14 to follow the next week while pool 13 is slightly lowered. The Rock Island district engineer warns the river from Keokuk to Dam 10 remains too weak to bear a man’s weight, but offers full cooperation to move traffic earlier if needed.

Everald Foltz Reports Navy Action in Pacific Attack

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Foltz of Mt Carroll learned their son Everald Foltz a radioman second class in the U S Navy is aboard a ship that took part in the attack on the Marshall and Gilbert Islands.

Swine and cattle fetch near top prices at Chicago yards

Carroll county livestock sold well at the Chicago Stock Yards last week. Mason Deers sent 59 prime butcher hogs averaging 278 pounds to the market, selling at 12.40 per ewt. Ed Snyder of Mt. Carroll marketed 25 heavy beef cattle averaging 1456 pounds at 13.40 per ewt, a top for that weight. O M Bloyer and Son of Lanark sold 1523 pound steers at 15.00 per cwt.

Farm Home Totally Destroyed Near Mt Carroll

Flames consumed a large frame farm home about four miles west of Mt Carroll at the foot of Tuckey Hill early Sunday. The Merle Kingery family occupied the Petty farm house, owned by Frederick Getz. Fire was spotted around 6 30 a m by Francis Gillespie who woke the family and helped move furnishings before the house burned to ashes two hours later. An east wind aided protection of nearby buildings while Mt Carroll’s rural truck arrived too late to save the structure. Cause of the fire remains unknown.

Tire board starts on new task in Carroll County

Carroll county's tire rationing board this week added the sale of new automobiles to its duties and issued certificates of purchase to Wallace Ware Lanark Ferdinand Grimm Thomson and Harold Manning Lanark after proof of bona fide pre January 1 1942 purchases with undelivered cars by that date. The board cannot issue auto purchase certificates yet except in such cases. A full time secretary Mrs Gladys M Dube was employed by the civil service commission. Board members are unpaid. secretary to be paid. The board also issued certificates for obsolete tires and tubes to eleven people three for truck tires and tubes and four for passenger car tires or tubes. District Legion Meeting Set in Lanark

The 18th district Legion delegates will meet in Lanark on Sunday March 16. Carroll county council of the American Legion announced the plans at Mt. Carroll last week. A business session talks entertainment and dinner are on the agenda.

Shannon High Beats Mt Carroll 40 to 33 in Conference Clash

Shannon High School defeated Mt Carroll High 40 to 33 Friday in the next to last conference game. Rodermel led Shannon with 12 points while Murney topped Mt Carroll with 8 as Shannon reserves won the preliminary 2 to 20.

Dial Phones Being Put In At Savanna

Northwestern Illinois telephone crews install dial type telephones in Savanna ahead of a full dial system this spring. A similar system was installed in Thomson last fall. The switchboard frame arrives this week with delivery for the board in April. If equipment arrives on time the Savanna conversion to a dial system should be completed in July.

J C Crom Dies at Coleta Home

J C Crom aged 82 longtime Genesee township resident dies at his Coleta home after a year of declining health. He served as Coleta mayor and Whiteside County supervisor with strong church and civic involvement. Survived by wife Sarah, eight children, seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Funeral held at Radical United Brethren church Coleta and burial in Milledgeville Bethel cemetery.

Draft registration totals exceed 1,200 in Carroll County

National selective service estimates 60 percent turnout versus 1940 levels, with 1,229 men registering in Carroll County on Monday. Savanna led registrations, while Mt. Carroll Lanark Milledgeville Thomson Chadwick Shannon showed lower totals. Supplies ran low in several towns and district officials sent cards and personnel to handle registrations and sorting for draft boards.

Wilkerson Pleads Guilty To Fraud Reports

Kenneth Pat Wilkerson, 42, former Mr. Carroll postmaster, pleaded guilty before Federal Judge Charles A. Woodward to making fraudulent payroll reports and asked for probation. The government had accused him of obtaining 75 dollars by padding payrolls and he resigned the postmastership last summer.

Savanna Wins Illowa Title In Friday Night Victory

Savanna high school defeated Lyons Iowa 34 to 28 to clinch the Illowa league title for the 1941 42 season. In a preliminary game Savanna defeated Lyons seconds 41 to 13. Johnson and Keller led Savanna with 27 of the 34 points in the main game, with Johnson scoring five baskets and five free throws and Keller six baskets.

Savanna ordnance depot commanding officer L. P. Crim has been promoted from lieutenant colonel to colonel. Crim arrived at the Savanna post in 1936 as a major, took command in March 1937, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in August 1946.
