Bootleggers were liquor sellers during Prohibition. The term arose from smugglers concealing bottles in their boot tops to transport illicit alcohol.

Marion Schroeder a Chicago soprano appears at Frances Shimer College on Sunday evening February 15 at 7 30 p m as part of the collar community lecture and entertainment series She is accompanied by Jane Lear and is known as a radio soloist with Henry Weber s WGN ensemble She has sung with Marshall Field Choral Society Arion Milwaukee and Euterpian Chicago and is praised for both voice and stage presence The accompanist has performed with the American Symphony and the Sherwood Symphony Orchestra in Chicago door admission available for nons season ticket holders.

Eber D. Shepherd announces Republican candidacy for Carroll County sheriff. He has toured the county gathering signatures to place his name on the April primary ballot. Known as sheriff 1934 1958 he later served as chief deputy then civilian guard at Savanna ordnance depot.
The report notes egg prices nearly double February 1941. On February 6 this year No 1 eggs sold for 21 cents per dozen versus 17 cents then. A Carrell County owner earned 70 dollars profit from 270 Leghorn hens, with feed and 40 cents hourly care. Eggs sold to a grocery store. Another farmer Chadwick sold 194 dollars worth of eggs in January from 260 White Rocks.
Miss Evelyn Bickster of Shannon and Ralph Robert of Lanark united in marriage at three o clock Thursday afternoon February five in Ottawa Ontario. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Zabrocki of Ottawa. A wedding dinner followed at the Zabrocki home and the couple will reside on the Lamoreux farm south of Lanark.
Chief registrar Lawrence F Brudi of Mt Carroll announces coordinated registration in seven towns for February 16. Registration will run 7 am to 9 pm with 10 to 30 clerks per town, most drawn from high school staff, except Milledgeville where 8 O Crom Wyxox will lead. Savanna plans high school gym registration with heavy volunteer help as many ordnance plant workers may register there.
Carroll high school, Lanarko, and Milledgeville led the league with five wins and three losses after Friday’s results. Fair Haven defeated Chadwick Bolt to push its rivals toward a likely three-way tie, while Lanark routs Themeon 42 24 with Gordon Keever back.
Mount Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance announces a National Youth Safety Contest for 14 to 21 year olds. Prizes range from 1 to 320 dollars with a chance to enter a nationwide contest. Winners write 300 to 500 word stories on What I Have Learned About Fire Prevention based on farm inspections and safety observations.
Albert O Horning World War I veteran native of Lanark died at 11705 p m Feb 4 at his Freeport home after a lingering illness Funeral rites were held in Freeport with burial in Lanark cemetery where military services were given He was born Oct 3 1887 in Lanark to Samuel and Phoebe Cary Horning married Nov 3 1918 to Phoebe Cary of Rockford He enlisted May 27 1918 in Savanna served with the 44th field artillery discharged Feb 7 1919 Surviving are his widow Mrs Charles Connelly of Freeport and two children Robert and Patricia Ann at home
Four candidates filed petitions Saturday for the April 14 Republican primary in Carroll county. Carlos Johnston led for sheriff, with Walter Watson for county clerk Frank Ross for county treasurer and Lawrence A. Smith for county judge. No school superintendent candidate filed, though incumbent Lawrence E. Bruch plans to run. No Democratic filings were made locally.
Lanark high school plus Gordon Keever back in the lineup trounced Mt Carroll 88 to 20 after a Friday win over Thomson. Lanark reserves won 27 to 20. Lead 13-3 first period, stretched to 15-point edge by third, final 38-20 post half clock.
Richard Emmerson an osteopathic physician in Mt Carroll announces he will enter military service and expects to close his office soon. He has practiced locally for some time and will transition from civilian practice to service obligations.
D. Gantert, water works superintendent, urged the Savanna city council to buy a turbine pump for well number four as the present pump works double duty. The well must produce 500 000 to 700 000 gallons, exceeding other wells, while regional water levels decline in nearby towns.
Lower temperatures Friday into Monday night produced snowfall that continued through Tuesday morning. Official totals show about three and a half inches with no significant drifts as winds faded. By noon Tuesday skies cleared but temperatures stayed cold, delaying snow clearance.

The driver said gear shift near the hilltop caused the loss of control on the icy road.
