Citizens of Carroll county and the country will rise an hour earlier next Monday in compliance with daylight saving. Some call it war time as President Roosevelt said this week. A lighthearted note about a missing horse story ends with a debt dispute and a possible future update.
Edgar F. Crozier in charge of the Dixon Illinois Regular Army Recruiting Station announces a goal to enlist nine thousand men at the nearest date. Requirements include ages 18 to 35 fit health moral standing and height 5 to 6 feet 6 inches with at least an eighth grade education or equivalent. Recruits go to Chicago for final exams then Camp Grant for classification and basic training with schooling afterward. Retirement after thirty years and benefits like free room board uniforms medical and dental care are offered along with recreation. Office hours are 8 am to 6 pm daily except Sunday.

For the second year in a row Carroll Jo Daviess and Lee counties saw no fatal automobile accidents in January despite poor road conditions. Stephenson Whiteside each logged two deaths while Ogle had one, contrasting with nearby counties.
U S engineers in the Rock Island district will auction about 45 items including farm buildings and cabins on land taken for Pool 13 in the Mississippi. The sale starts at 10 a m February 13 at the round barn west of route 80 near Savanna with leasing bids also open for several government tracts suitable for farming or cabin sites.
Two Lanark stockmen, Per cy Schriner and C H Roth, sold swine at the Chicago Stock Yards last week. Roth moved 64 hogs averaging 265 pounds at 12.20 per cwt, the January butcher high in 15 years, without sorting. Schriner sold 63 hogs averaging 257 pounds at 11.75 per cwt, plus three 430 pound heavyweights at 11.00 per cwt. Hog prices peaked at 12.15 per cwt on Friday, a 25 cent rise.
More than 300 persons attended Carroll county livestock marketing committee’s annual dinner Saturday night. Prof. W. G. Kammlade of the University of Illinois urged boosting farm production for defense while stressing quality over quantity. A representative of the Producers' association said livestock market men foresee no drop in market prices.
Mrs Dorothy May Brooks 38 of Lanark wife of Charles W Brooks died suddenly from a heart attack at her Lanark home about 7230 p m Jan 28. She moved with three children Charles Virginia and Edward from Wyoming Illinois for housing relief. Born May 14 1908 she was married May 14 1926 to Charles Brooks. Survived by husband two brothers Howard Whitmer and Harold and four sisters. Funeral held in Frank funeral home Lanark with Rev F A Sword. burial in Lanark cemetery.
Shannon High School tops the Carroll conference after a victory over Chadwick and Lanark’s loss to Milledgeville. Lanark ties Milledgeville for second as Chadwick drops to third and Thomson stays fourth. Mt. Carroll remains winless.
Lavetta Neuschwanger, daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Neuschwanger of Carroll, is among the first five U S nurses to volunteer for Red Cross duty in Honolulu. A Mt Carroll High School and St Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing alumna, she previously worked with The Creche nursery project in Hollywood aiding mothers in defense jobs.
Milledgeville defeats Lanark 37 to 28 on Milledgeville floor to notch a second conference loss for Lanark. Wy Sox build a nine point lead in the first period and hold it, with Lanark reserves taking an 18 to 9 win in a preliminary game.
Names of citizens chosen for the Carroll County circuit court March term petit jury were announced by Circuit Clerk John Gelwicks. The panel includes Wayne Gillespie, Ray Gelwicks, Harry Dinderman, Fred Lessman, John McAuliffe, Donald Jones, Lillian Garner, S. R. Brenneman, Daisy Rupp, Harold Gouker, and many others from Woodland to York and Wysex with listed residences such as Freedom Cherry Grove Mt. Carroll Dan Dauphin and Fair Haven.
Spring primary races are shaping up for at least three county offices with filings opening February 7. Current contenders include for county clerk Walter Watson vs Sharpe Carroll, for sheriff Carlos Johnston and Eber Shepherd, and for county judge O M Grove and Lawrence Smith.
The January old age assistance payments in Illinois reached a new high of 49 510 recipients totaling 3 751 546 as reported by state auditor Arthur C. Lueder. In Carroll County 10 566 was paid to 445 people. Auditor notes ADC warrants also rose with Carroll County issuing 4 warrants for 79 dependents totaling 1 111 for January.
Carroll County records show Oak Hill cemetery board of managers denying good faith of the petition for audit. The board contends a personal feud exists between petitioner Melvin Finer and Mt. Carroll attorney John Turnbaugh, with treasurer’s report already submitted to Mt. Carroll city council and approved September 26, 1941.
Today a new staff assumes duty in the Carroll County office of the agricultural conservation program. The resignations of J. W. Erdmier and Mrs. Irmn R. Hartman are effective, with Herman Daehler named chairman, Frederick Nycum as office manager, Miss Lois Zuck as secretary treasurer, and Eugene P. Murray becoming a regular county committee member to fill a vacancy.
Secretary of State Edward J. Hughes released figures showing 1,264 drivers licenses revoked in 1941. Most revocations stemmed from driving while intoxicated, with 1,247 cases. 69 had no set time limit. Financial Responsibility related judgments numbered 1,666 and proof of responsibility was posted in 442 cases. Overall revocations rose 21 percent from 1940.
The Mt. Carroll circuit court granted Ida Hoot a divorce from Hollis Root on cruelty charges. Separately, fines, pleas, and probation actions were handled for cases including a rape conviction and several property transactions across Savanna Lanark Milledgeville and surrounding townships.
Men aged 20 to 45 must register February 16 for possible army service under the selective service act. Registration will run 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at designated community sites, with high schools in Carroll County likely serving as venues. Registrants include men born between July 2, 1920 and Dec 31, 1921 and others born between Feb 17, 1897 and Oct 16, 1904.
Nearly half of Illinois draft registrants classified 4-F due to permanent physical disability are prepared for defense work under a vocational rehabilitation plan. The Rockford district office, covering Carroll County, will accept applications and place or train men rejected for military service based on vocational qualifications.
Hugh F. Senneff son of Mr and Mrs Freece Senneff of Chadwick enlisted January 15 in the army air corps at Rantoul. He attended the University of Illinois studying vocational agriculture and was to receive his degree February 4. He is now listed as Private Hugh F. Senneff Flight 28 357 S S Jefferson Barracks Missouri.
J W Erdmier of the USDA County War Board appeals to Carroll County farmers to collect old scrap iron for 1942 war needs. The drive targets wire bale ties, paper, metal, rubber, and bale ties to conserve materials. tips include reusing ties, splicing short wire, and drying stored ties.
