In Babson Park on February 4 1954 readers are urged to shop aggressively for winter markdowns across many goods. Furs coats wool suits appliances and furniture see notable price cuts as merchants reduce stock to boost turnover while parking space becomes a new dare. Neighborhood notices include several local households visiting relatives and hosting dinners.
Funeral services for Mrs George Schneider of Lanark were held Friday at the Lanark Methodist church with Rev. Irving Bruhn officiating. Burial followed in Lanark cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, one son, three grandchildren, three brothers and three sisters. The deceased was born February 22 1870 in Mt Carroll and married George Schneider in 1894. her husband died in 1924.
Chadwick high school beat Shannon Eagles 75-73 in double overtime after a 51-50 freshman win. Weber led Chadwick with 23 points, Doden 18, Handel 10, while Shannon’s Fransen totaled 29.
Oregon defeats Mill edgeville 77 41 in a non conference game Friday night. Chuck Cleaver leads Oregon scorers with 20 points on eight baskets and four free throws. Drl Smith tops Milledgeville with 14 points. Milledgeville won the preliminary 48 47.
Maurie Strukhoff celebrates a quarter century as Thomson, Iowa linotype operator for the Review. A self taught craftsman and former linotype apprentice, he ran Model 5 and later Model 14 machines, kept parts stocked, and even fixed parts at home.
Mr. and Mrs. John Doty and sons were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Oberbil lig in Sterling. Mr. and Mrs. John Hoover of Argona and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller of Lanark joined Mrs. H. F. Weber and several others visiting Mrs. Jessie Straub in Sterling last Thursday afternoon.
Savanna beat Galena 80 to 64 after leading 13 20 20 27 in the second half. Earlier Savanna won the preliminary 49 to 18 as Shannon contributed strong scoring.
Sunday and Tuesday dinners and lunches were held at multiple homes. Guests included Howard Mackey and Hattie Doden honoring birthdays and an anniversary in Lanark and Moline, Forest Bokemeier from Freeport, L. A. Frank, Elmer Zugschwerdt, Fay Lower, J. R. Smith, Ormond Runnels, Wesley Luckstead, Albert Hartman, Leroy Foltz, Myrta Groharing, Bessie Groharing, and Leland Forth with families in Lanark, Polo, and near Lanark.
The Carroll County draft list shows 33 men inducted into the U S Armed Forces through the Selective Service System. Names include Jack W Paschal Richard H Aries Savanna Tlrbert W Carson Charles W Kingery William W Reiling and others from towns such as Lanark Milledgeville Morrison Polo Glen Dittmar and more.
Mt Carroll 16 year old Ralph Leslie Johnson was bound over to the grand jury on Feb 4 after confessing to Sheriff Harry Miller involvement in four Mt Carroll burglaries. He admitted breaks at Western Auto, Coast to Coast, Darnell's Radio Shop, and Brown Lynch Scott hardware with most stolen items found at his home and in junked car trunks. Johnson, son of Mrs Pearl Grams, confessed without accomplices.
Betty Fay Green and Nancy Zimmerman visited Elizabeth Quest at her parents home, then returned to Beloit to register for the second semester. Several couples and families shared meals and visits across Beloit Miledgeville Sterling Lanark Chadwick and Mt Carroll, including trips to Chicago for business and pleasure and a Country Life Insurance meeting at Edgewater Beach hotel.
The Milledgeville event calendar lists the annual Livestock Feeders banquet on February 18 at the local school gym. Invitations are encouraged with a points system awarding four points for attendee invitations and ten points for joining, aimed at boosting membership through upcoming February and March meetings. An awards portion for Play Day on March 30 and radio television show honor is noted.
District conferences for local 4-H club leaders are planned for Monday March 1 in Loveland Community Building Dixon and March 2 at the American Legion hall Freeport. The Carroll County Livestock Feeders association banquet is set for Thursday evening February 18 in Milledgeville school gym. The eighth annual event, largest county feeders group in Illinois, will feature a top dinner and talks on feeder topics with Orville Cockrel toast master and Milton Dunk Poultry Tribune editor as speaker. Tickets are available from association members.
The Home Bureau outlines a week of county and area meetings from Feb 12 to Feb 19. Activities cover major lessons in home adviser topics, special activities like Swedish Darning and casserole dish recipe exchanges, and roll calls. Locations include Mrs. Eugene Murray West End Mrs. Charles Myers Lanark Rock Creek Hickory Grove Cherry Grove Lima Larks Shannon Rural and Farm Bureau hall with times mainly 1:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. and a 6:30 p.m. event.
A double ring wedding took place at 2 30 p m Thursday Feb 4 in Freeport Methodist chapel uniting Miss Savanna Garcia to David Milroy son of Mr and Mrs Rex Milroy Milledgeville The bride wore a brown suit with red accessories and carried carnations The groom's family and Mrs John Garcia attended the ceremony A dinner followed at the Bach home in Savanna with yellow pompons decor The couple reside at 801 Chicago Ave Savanna and will be in Savanna.
