Marshall Richards 27 pleaded guilty in county court to driving while intoxicated. Judge O M Grove sentenced him to 60 days in the county jail and revoked his license for one year. Richards was arrested by Sheriff Ray Westfall after a crash on state route 78 near Mt. Carroll that involved a large transport truck and a wrecked car found abandoned on the highway. John Ivey of Chicago reported the semi trailer overturned and hides spilled on the road. Richards was bound over to the grand jury after a hearing before Justice Frank Schroeppel and remained jailed on $1,000 bond.
Miss Jean Schreiner, a second year student at Francis Shimer College, will be installed tonight into the Pro Musico club. The event marks her formal induction into the musical organization on campus.
Savanna township tax bill for 1939 is about 1200 dollars lower than in 1938, first township in the county to show a reduction as tax extending for corporation purposes in Savanna city falls by roughly 7000 dollars while other taxing bodies rise slightly. The 1939 total is 113079.51 versus 114232.22 in 1938. a table details tax allocations for the two years.
Carroll county banks will close on Lincoln's birthday Feb 12 and Washington's birthday Feb 22 in observance of legal holidays. Savanna high school beat Lyons 35 to 18 on Lyons floor to strengthen its claim to the Illinois league title. The first half was tight with a one point margin at the break before Savanna pulled away in the second half. Savanna lightweights also prevailed 28 to 11. The conference record stands at four wins no losses with two games remaining against Maquoketa and DeWitt.
Three more Carroll county elementary schools received state certificates of recognition from the state superintendent. Shannon grade school and Union rural school renewals join Strawberry school, the first time it is recognized. Sixteen county schools hold recognition, with four earning superior ratings.
Preston Prairie Mrs. John Hammond and Mrs. Fred Wolf visited the Ira Fish home near Savanna. Wallace Williams named their infant son Wall ace Jr. Reid Horner and Vivian Downing joined Sunday dinner at Paul Metz home. Glenn Bickelhaupt and Melvin Getz visited Clinton and Milwaukee respectively over the weekend.
Funeral services for Charles S Deneen former Illinois governor and US senator will be at 3 pm Thursday at Englewood Methodist Church with burial in Oak Woods cemetery. Deneen died Monday at 76 after a heart attack survived by his widow a son three daughters and two sisters. He served as governor 1904 1908 and as US senator 1925 1931.
Judge Harry Wheat grants a divorce to Elda M. Preston from Lyman W. Preston for cruelty. He reserved ruling on the validity of Carroll county election judge and clerk appointments after arguments. The case was appealed by Walter Sherlock, following county court overrulings. The brief lists multiple quitclaim and warranty deeds across Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Cherry Grove, York, and Chadwick involving numerous parties and properties.
James F. McCray, Mt Carroll cooperative observer, reports January as a real winter month with a high of 53 degrees above zero on three days and a low of 20 degrees below. There were 14 days at or below freezing, 18 inches of snowfall of which 12 fell in the Jan 15 14 storm, and total precipitation of 1.78 inches, 1.06 inches in 24 hours.
January results show Rush Carroll of Thomson leading with 25 purebred Holsteins and 1 2 12 pounds of milk and 44.9 pounds of fat average for the herd. Wallace Williams of Mt Carroll follows with 1 2 07 pounds of milk and 42.6 fat from seven purebreds and eight grade Holsteins. Ninety cows produced 40 to 81.5 pounds of butterfat.
Petitions from five candidates for April 9 Republican nominations in Carroll County were filed with County Clerk Walter Watson. The slate includes Dr J B Schreiter Savanna coroner John Gelwicks Mt Carroll circuit clerk John L Brearton Savanna state’s attorney and John D Turnbaugh Mt Carroll state’s attorney Lawrence A Smith Savanna. No Democratic county filings yet though more are expected by February 19. Local posts include coroner circuit clerk and state’s attorney with precinct committeemen elected by both parties on April 9.
Carroll high won the Carroll conference reserve tournament by defeating Shannon reserves 28 to 11 after beating Lanark in the semi finals. Lanark finished third by downing Thomson 16 to 12 in the consolation. Carroll led early and stayed ahead in the final.

Announcement of the Lincoln Post Office dedication at New Salem Park on February 12 1940 from 1 to 2 pm. Postmaster General James A Farley to be chief speaker with U S Senators Lucas Slattery and Rep Barnes as speakers and Logan Hay chairman. Farley to visit Illinois governor Horner at the executive mansion.

Keever, Lanark guard, hit a field goal in the final 20 seconds to lift Lanark to a 28 27 victory over Winslow on the Winslow high school floor. Winslow led 6 5 after one, trailed 12 10 at halftime, and was even in the final quarter.
Lanark edged Milledgeville 30 to 27 on Milledgeville's floor despite a 19 point third quarter rally by the Millies. Keever led Lanark with five baskets while Fogel scored nine for Milledgeville as Lanark reserves won 20 to 12 and 35 to 1 in preliminary games.
