York cagers edged Fair Haven 27 to 25 to take second place in the Carroll County conference as Chadwick and Milledgeville split later and Mt Carroll extends lead. Lanark moved to 4th with a 50 30 win over Shannon while Savanna tops Illowa conference after beating DeWitt 43 11.
Circuit Clerk John Gelwicks drew the March term petit jury panel for Carroll County. The panel includes many names across towns such as Fair Haven York Wysox Salem Rock Creek Lima Cherry Grove Shannon Mr Carroll and Savanna with numerous women among the members.
Two Carroll county feeders sold cattle last week at Chicago Stock Yards. Ab Prins near Thomson earned 9.25 dollars per cwt for 29 yearling heifers averaging 770 pounds on Monday. John Balk of Lanark sold 20 beeves averaging 1047 pounds at 10.25 dollars per ewt on Wednesday.
Preston Prairie County Agent M. P. Roske was here Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Newman of Alton are visiting and will spend weeks nearby. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bicklehaupt were in Clinton Saturday. Ward Weidman and Elmer V. Smith families are listed among the sick. Francis Handel of Savanna was heard on NBC Saturday January 27 at 6 a.m.
Automobile owners in Carroll roll county paid a total of $77,838 in automobile license fees in 1939, the automobile division under the secretary of state reported last week. Illinois state road fund collections amounted to $23,829,819.
Legend persists despite doubt as followers await Gus the groundhog’s forecast on Friday. Although debunked as a weather prophet the event draws attention on Groundhog Day with the promise of six weeks of winter depending on the shadow.
York township 1939 tax extension figures show an increase of about 4000 dollars over 1938, driven mainly by county levies, the new library tax, and high school district 201. The library levy appears for the first time, funded partly by a shift from village taxes, narrowing the overall rise.
United States Army engineers finished a three week survey of Rock Creek drainage in Carroll and Whiteside counties. R E Myers and eight surveyors submitted the report guiding a flood control project. initial work began January 2 with a larger crew.
Kenneth S. Boesen of Sterling recently named truck registrar for the district will be at Mt. Carroll every Saturday in the circuit court room from 9 a.m. all day to provide information on the new state law requiring inspection and insurance of trucks. He may stay into the evening if needed.
Leaf River High School defeated Shannon High 37 to 22 on Tuesday night, with 24 of Leaf River's points coming in the final half. Shannon reserves won 14 to 13 in the opening game, as Leaf River led 11 to 6 after the first quarter and 13 to 8 at halftime.
Carroll county 4-H members are urged to attend a county rally February 8 at the Mt. Carroll community house. Harold Jepson of Urbana will lead, with talks from club members, awards, recreation, and refreshments. Speakers include Maurice Guenzler, Lanark, and Savanna youths Paul Miller, Paul Doty, Fred Dauphin, plus Harry Stengel.
Savanna High School defeated Mt Carroll 48 to 20 on Mt Carroll’s floor paced by center Johnson who scored 19 points. Emmert led Mt Carroll with six. In prelims Savanna reserves beat Mt Carroll 25 to 20 and Mt Carroll grade school beat Chestnut Park 26 to 13.
Farmers in Carroll County will have their prior year books audited at three meetings this month. E. V. Stadel of the University of Illinois will supervise. On February 5 the forenoon audit will occur at Mt. Carroll Farm Bureau, and Feb. 6 at Lanark Exchange State Bank, with Feb. 7 at the Farm Bureau office for morning sessions.
A series of county meetings will explore probable effects of the European war on Illinois and American farmers. Carroll county hosts February 9 and Whiteside on February 12. E J Working and R C Ross assist in programing at Carroll and Whiteside sessions.
Congressman Leo E. Allen of Galena announces in Washington that he will not seek the United States Senate nomination. He cites belief in a Republican House, aims to block liberal measures, and expresses duty to remain in his current congressional role while remaining open to re election to Congress.
Old age assistance payments totaling $2,818,884 were issued to 139,664 Illinois residents in January. Superintendent Fletcher C. Kettle announced an average award of $20.18, up 15 cents from December, with 888 more recipients and a $39,844 monthly increase. Kettle recently appointed to lead the Division. Weigel shifts to Administrative Assistant to A. L. Bowen.
Judge Harry Wheat of Freeport will preside at a Mt Carroll circuit court session on Tuesday Feb 6. Howard F Griffith and Bernice T Spengler of Shannon filed an application for a marriage license. County records show nearly $2000 in fox bounties paid since December 1937, covering more than 800 foxes. No special election to fill the 15th circuit vacancy has been called, leaving two judges to handle the business, though many attorneys urge a third judge is needed.

A fire caused by a defective chimney damaged the Kurt Schmidt residence in Mt Carroll on Monday afternoon. Firemen arrived about 4 p m and forced a wall cut to extinguish flames spreading inside the wall with estimated damage between 100 and 200 dollars.
This week features games on February 2 with Shannon at Chadwick Mt Carroll at Thomson Lanark at Milledgeville and Savanna at Lyons. February 6 has Fulton at Mt Carroll Savanna at DeWitt. February 7 includes Lanark at Pearl City and Milledgeville at Shannon. York high school reserves trounced Milledgeville lights 26 to 13 while Lanark edged Chadwick 15 to 14 in opening rounds of the Mt. Carroll reserve team tournament. Semifinals pitted Mt. Carroll against Lanark as York faced Shannon, with finals set after a consolation game.
Carroll County field rep R B Gelwicks of the Blackhawk Production Association says the sixth annual meeting will be February 7 1940 at Odd Fellows Hall Freeport. An interesting program is planned with growth and St Louis officials of the parent organization to speak. A large Carroll County turnout is expected due to rising interest in Production Credit Financing.
Rural residents near Scales Mound will receive temporary electricity from a mobile two unit diesel plant bought by Jo Carroll Rural Electric Co op for 25000 dollars. The unit provides up to 200 kilowatts and will be used until lines from the Tri State Co op reach Genoa Wisconsin. The plant is built on two trailers with four diesel engines and 480 volt generators.
Unemployed workers in Carroll county were paid $1150 in unemployment benefits during December as announced by the state director of labor. Checks ranged from $7 to $16 based on prior earnings. the state average weekly check was $13. Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Wiersema and their son of Fulton were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Klaas Wiersema.
