The piece notes unusually cold weather and drifting snow that hindered travel on rural roads and forced some rural schools to cancel sessions. Two Carroll county stockmen topped Chicago Stock Yards hog sales last week. J H Miller near Shannon earned 5.35 per cwt on 275 pound butchers, while Ed Kampmier of Shannon sold 60 head averaging 848 pounds at 5.20 per cwt. The market also saw a record truck load run and cattle prices hit 12.15 per cwt for the year.
With blank tax bill forms arriving last week the county treasurer and deputies begin filling them for 1939. Extensions have reached seven or eight of fourteen townships, with larger areas left for last. Cherry Grove and Salem townships show higher taxes than 1938, driven by higher levies for county, town and road purposes.
Farm Bureau delegates from this county join Carroll Service and County Life Insurance company reps planning to attend the Illinois Agriculture Association convention in Chicago from January 40 to February 1. Delegates chosen January 13 are Naaman Diehl Lanark John Heinze Shannon and John Fogel Milledgeville. Also attending are Ralph Fabhrney Vincent Olson Howard Woessner Ray Moyer D R Lower Eldon Lower Guy Mackey and possibly Warm Adviser M P Roske.
Nell Stewart R N county nurse releases her annual Carrol county report for 1939 detailing visits to homes 1703 up from 2381 in 1938 and 471 counties miles 9471. She notes immunization and crackdowns on tuberculosis plus school health measures and crippled child referrals.
Mt Carroll Horsemen's Association weighs a spring or early summer horse show at the old fair grounds in Mt Carroll in collaboration with the Northern Illinois Horsemen's Association. About 16 members exist, with officers named and offers of free fair grounds use, hauling, feed, and office supplies. A membership drive and further planning are planned.
About two years ago Hungarian partridges were released at the Proving Grounds north of Savanna. The wandering birds travel up to ten miles daily and have reached Carroll County. Residents are asked to watch for them and notify Thom as Hand at Thomson promptly. An investigation is planned to assess their cold weather tolerance.
Mr and Mrs Harry Hoffman of Savanna marked their 58th wedding anniversary observed with open house at their Savanna home. The couple wed on January 24 1882 and have lived in Savanna since 1891. He worked as a machinist for the Milwaukee railroad until 1928, retiring after 52 years of service. Mrs Hoffman is 78 and he recently celebrated his 84th birthday.
Mrs Jesse Colehour departed Saturday for Lakeland Florida to visit Mr and Mrs Louis Cunningham. Mrs Howard Petty traveled to Solon Iowa to stay with her sister Mrs Neto Licky. Several residents attended the wedding of Mildred Fulrath and Marvin Moltman at the Lutheran church in Savanna Sunday afternoon. A group of Preston Prairie men now wear A F B F pins.
The final date for a special judicial election to fill the Dixon 15th circuit vacancy after Judge Harry Edwards death faces delay. Governor Horner reportedly will not call a special election for April 9. Republicans Ralph Eaton Donald Eaton George Dixon and Robert Bracken are listed as potential candidates while Democrats show little interest.
Chicago attorney F. J. Stransky warned Illinois Holstein-Friesian Association members that farming profits come only from sound management and soil value. He warned against short cuts to riches, urging owners to reinvest profits into soil and livestock, noting tenant conflicts and dilapidated buildings misstate soil value.
The Carroll County Republican central committee announced a Lincoln day dinner to be served February 14 in the Mt. Carroll high school gym. Tickets are distributed by committee members and may be obtained from them. They hope to secure either Richard Lyons or Dwight Green as the main speaker. A marriage license was issued in Clinton, Iowa, to Robert Linker of Lanark and June Rahn of Milledgeville.
A Lincoln Day dinner is scheduled for February 14 at Mt Carroll High School. Since December 1, 1980, 124 corn loans covering 96 001 bushels of 1939 ear corn have been completed in Carroll county. Elver-Fisfeller, secretary for the county AAA committee, said 64 applications remain to be completed. Eligible producers may secure 1080 corn loans until March 41, 1940.
Mt Carroll high school beat Shannon 37 to 26 securing a fifth straight conference win and leadership. Carroll light weights won 21 to 17. Chadwick beat Lanark 46 to 34 to remain second with four wins and one loss. Chadwick reserves won 14 to 10. York of Thomson topped Milledgeville 38 to 30 and York second team won 25 to 10. Milledgeville Lanark and Shannon sit at the conference cellar with one victory and four defeats.

Savanna fire department answered two calls Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday blaze at Luther Lynn home in Oak Park started when an overheated gas stove ignited a wall partition. Sunday around 6 p.m. smoke from a dry furnace pan at John Rogers home triggered a fire scare.
