Carroll County Board approves annual reports in Mt Carroll

Carroll county board of supervisors met in Mt Carroll for a two day session approving bills and the annual reports of county officials. The general county fund showed a Dec 1 balance of 41916.23 with receipts totaling 711632.87 and disbursements of 34118.22 plus jury warrants 833.95 and other fees. Mothers pension fund had 241.58 from the state and 4817.34 from the county with six months payouts totaling 2272.50. Highway fund receipts were 13081.01 with 4921.50 paid.

Legion Plans to Distribute Xmas Baskets in Savanna

The American Legion in Savanna prepares its thirteenth annual Christmas baskets for needy families. Committee head Albert M. Greison and members Vincent Sullivan John Altenbern Leo Nast Ben Rogers Ralph Thain and Fred Thain coordinate with the Shaw Leavens VFW post Van Bibber Hansen American Legion post and Savanna Lions Club for cash and food donations. The U and I club of Savanna, with Legion Goodfellows, plan a similar drive to maximize baskets without overlap.

Nativity Play at Shimer Set for Sunday Evening

A nativity drama titled The Finding of the King will be set at Shimer Junior College in Mt. Carroll on Sunday December 15 at 7 30 pm in the gym. A musical program of English carols from the 14th to 17th centuries will accompany the performance by members of the dramatic and glee clubs under Dorothy Wil as director and Mrs Scott as musical director. Admission is free with a silver offering collected.

Savanna Amends Parking Ordinance At City Meeting

The Savanna council approved a Parking Ordinance amendment restricting parking on 4th Street in Arvana Borough and Sibington Street to within ten feet of school blocks. Vehicles may park within school blocks if within ten feet of the building. The amendment imposes penalties for violators under state traffic laws enforceable by the city police.

WPA Sewing Project Aided by Savanna PTA

Ten women on the WPA sewing project in Savanna craft garments for children from financially embarrassed families. Equipment and much material were donated by the Savanna Parent Teachers Association. The project may expand to additional work as it progresses. Lowell Teeter, son of auctioneer Glenn Teeter, assists at farm sales and foresees a future as an auctioneer himself.

Richter Wins Farm Bureau Essay Contest

Glen Richter of Salem township won the Farm Bureau essay contest sponsored by the livestock marketing division. Betty Rose Swett of Bristol York township took second place and Betty Keim of Kingery school Salem township third. Judges were Walter Lamoreux and Kurt Schmidt.

Second Vocational Guidance Conference at Stockton High

Northwestern Illinois high school seniors will attend a one day conference at Stockton High School in February. Held last year at Frances Shimer College, the event moved to Stockton due to space. Organized by the Tri county Schoolmasters club, plan is to host 500 students with lectures from a nationally known vocational guidance expert and about twenty sessions on various fields.

County relief expenditures in November totaled 1419.68 for Carroll County residents not aided by the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission. Hospital and doctor bills are excluded. figures to be reviewed by the county board. Jury Fails to Agree 9-3 in Dennison Case

Jurors in circuit court at Mt Carroll could not reach a verdict after nearly thirteen hours of deliberation. The closest vote was 3 to 3 for convict or acquit, and Judge Edwards dismissed the jury. No new trial date has been set.

New Scout Officials Installed in Freeport Area

New officials of the U. S. Grant Council Boy Scouts were installed at the annual meeting in Freeport Sunday. George Chronic of Chicago officiated. Savanna resident Miss Pet Madsen, who sang whistling solos on a local Barnyard Jamboree program, won the George Olsen Amateur show in Savanna last week. She was a guest of Mr and Mrs Olsen in the College Inn, Hotel Sherman, and performed on WEBM. Plack Wins Carroll County Spelling Meet

Beth Allene Plack captured the gold medal as champion speller for Carroll county schools at Mt. Carroll high school on Saturday. She will enter the state contest in Springfield on December 26 representing the county. Plack attends Baustwood School near Lanark, under Gladys Tailman Rister. Glen Richter of Kingery school won second place, with Lucille Smith as his teacher. Valley Heisler of Shannon grade school took third.

Carroll County Receives Motor Fuel Tax Allocation

The state finance department announced Carroll county's share of November motor fuel tax, totaling $2,131, part of statewide $960,357 distributed to counties. The announcement notes Carroll's portion within the statewide allotment.
