Carroll County Farm Bureau unit meetings set to elect directors

Farm Bureau members in Carroll County begin a series of township unit meetings to elect directors for the coming year and nominate candidates for Carroll Service Company. Townships including Fair Haven, Yorktown, Wysox, and Elkhorn Grove hold sessions with others scheduled December 12 to December 15. The president will be chosen by members at the 1939 annual meeting. current officers include Naaman Diehl and Eugene Murray with a slate of listed directors.

Landscaping at New York World's Fair 1939 Reveals Record Plantings

Landscaping of the fair grounds is described as record making in extent and variety. By the opening on April 30 the site will boast 10 000 shade trees across 50 species 250 000 shrubs from 500 kinds 1 000 000 perennials and annuals from 400 sorts and 1 000 000 flowering bulbs.

Auto Fatalities Increase Sharply in November

Northern Illinois counties logged 22 auto deaths in November, over twice October’s toll, pushing the year total to 112 across ten counties. Ogle and Lee report the heaviest toll while Jo Daviess and Carroll show the lowest, with four November fatalities in Carroll all noncollision pedestrian or doze-at-wheel cases.

Death of Mrs Anna Meyers prompts services at Polo

Funeral services for 73 year old Anna Meyers who died November 30 at her daughter Mrs William Duffy's home northwest of Milledgeville were held Friday at the Duffy home and at the Polo Christian church with Rev L V Lovell officiating. Burial was in Fairmount cemetery. Surviving are a daughter Mrs Duffy a son Isaac of Milledgeville six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Will of William Curran of Chadwick admitted to probate in county court naming executors Mrs Carrie Lampert of Lanark and her husband C J Lampert. Inventory filed. Circuit Judge Leon A Zick attended Mt Carroll for circuit court but adjourned at noon with plan to return today for another session.

New Sheriff Receives County Car Under Official Use Policy

Ray R. Westfall, who began his term Monday, had a county owned car purchased last Thursday for the sheriff’s official duties. The county will cover car costs and maintenance. Bids came from five towns Lanark Milledgeville Mt Carroll Savanna and Clinton Iowa with a Lanark dealer selected. AAA cuts soil-depleting acreage while corn allotment holds

Sterling man freed on recognizance but rearrested on parole violation

Joseph Deets of Sterling, held on larceny charges, was released on his own recognizance Monday and promptly rearrested by the sheriff on a parole violation warrant. He was indicted previously on larceny, but is not expected to face trial and will be sent back to prison for parole violation.

County purchases a new automobile for sheriff use as part of budget spending. Weather observers report November rainfall above normal locally. Corn loan applications are being accepted with loans to be secured under specified guidelines through April 1.

Mary Schaut Appointed to Pension Post

Miss Mary Schaut was appointed superintendent of public welfare for Carroll County by the state department of public welfare under a new setup. The old age assistance office remains in Mt Carroll. the county committee is eliminated and the supervisor reports directly to the state department. Schaut earned the highest rating among local applicants. Florence Marks of Shannon ranked second.

Local man sentenced to 30 days for fraud check

Edward J. Bussan of Galena received 30 days in county jail from Circuit Judge Leon A. Zick after a trial without a jury. He was charged with issuing a fraudulent $10 check to William O Leary of the Black House near Savanna on July 6, 1988, drawn on a Galena bank and returned for insufficient funds, with four similar charges nolled as the checks were later honored.

Christmas Pageant at Frances Shimer College Sunday

Frances Shimer college students present a medieval Gothic cathedral pageant with forty glee club members performing from the rear balcony. A group of dancing angels shepherds Gabriel and oriental kings move through the audience as they sing medieval carols and Christmas folk songs under Madame Gilderoy Scott and Miss Annie Ross. County Officers Sworn In For New Term Monday

Four county officials were sworn into office Monday morning and began the new term. Sheriff Ray R. Westfall and Treasurer Lula Ross start their first terms, while County Judge Orion M. Grove and County Clerk Walter R. Watson were re-elected. County Superintendent Lawrence E. Bruch’s term begins August 1, 1939.
