Babson argues 1913 U S wages totaled 89.5 billion with 12 billion in overtime pay. He predicts overtime will fade postwar, pushing toward shorter weeks, higher efficiency, and savings. prices must stay affordable while workers choose leisure or higher消费 goods. He warns wage and price reforms should reflect supply and demand as reconversion begins.
County Superintendent Lawrence E. Bruch reports a Sept 19 program where state representatives demonstrate implementing a new law requiring daily physical education for all public school pupils. Rural teachers will attend sessions at North Otter Creek Georgetown Pleasant Hill and Mt Carroll high school for principals and PE teachers. First grade pupils must receive a physical exam, and every four years thereafter under the act taking effect July 1.
Savanna Lanark exhibitor Leland Zier won grand champion steer with an Aberdeen Angus at Carroll County 4-H Roundup in Old Mil Park Savanna. Lawrence Keim Mt Carroll took both grand and reserve in daily divisions with Brown Swiss entries, and a Poland China pig shown by Ronnie Sturtevant earned swine grand champion. A Shropshire ram led the sheep grand champion with Forrest Byer Mt Carroll winning reserve. Sixty five 4-H girls took part in a dress revue as dignitaries spoke on agriculture groups.
T Sgt Robert E Rahn 20 son of Mr and Mrs Earl Rahn of Lanark was killed in action over Germany May 29 1944. He volunteered as radio gunner on a bomber replacing a fallen crewman and was born June 22 1924 near Mt Carroll. He enlisted February 25 1942 and trained in several bases before overseas duty in April 1944. Surviving are his parents two sisters and three brothers plus his fiancee Miss Wilma Jean Newton.
Salem township farmers will report conservation practices at two community committee meetings. One at Fair Haven town hall Chadwick on Sept 6 from 1 pm to 9 pm and another at AAA Mt. Carroll office Sept 7 from 1 pm to 9 pm. Daehler notes additional evidence needed for alfalfa red clover and alse seed payments with a State Seed Testing Laboratory certification.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sour and son John of Argo and John Sour of Fulton, along with Mr. and Mrs. Anne Blink and daughters Wilma and Arlene of Fulton, spent Sunday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Imel.

Several thousand dollars of government owned hemp burned at Hemp Industries plant in Polo when a blaze started in spoiled stock spread to good hemp. Fire chief Basil Rinard estimated four acres burned with damage near 3000 dollars and noted water shortages hampered suppression.
County treasurer Frank L Rose reported another tax fund distribution of 85000 dollars to Carroll County townships. Allocations included Washington 1700 Woodland 150 Freedom 1800 Cherry Grove 4500 Shannon 2100 Lima 1650 Rock Creek 5150 Salem 4850 Mr Carroll 11850 Savanna 24000 York 6000 Fair Haven 2700 Wysox 4000 Elkhorn Grove. He noted 1945 taxes collected up to 90 percent in some townships and expected county total above 69 percent by week’s end.
The Carroll county tire shortage worsens with 57 tires needed for 22 trucks and 152 No 1 tires awaited. September quotas are expected smaller, while August hit 47 tires for trucks and 16 front tractor tires. OPA district director Robert M Harper labels the shortage alarming and urges priority for essential war travel and ride sharing.
Clinton stores will close next Monday for Labor Day and reopen at noon Tuesday. The Chamber of Commerce announced hours shift to 9 p m closing, with regular winter hours following thereafter from 12:30 a m to 5:30 p m daily except Mondays.
Harvey C. Lindsay 72, retired Lanark city mail carrier, died Saturday at Deaconess Hospital Freeport. Funeral services were held Tuesday from Frank Funeral Home Lanark with burial in Lanark cemetery. Born October 1871 in Somerset County Pennsylvania, he moved west as a youth and lived north of Lanark. He served as mail carrier from 1920 to 1937 and is survived by his mother and three brothers Albert J M Ernest all of Lanark.
Bertrand Earl Sartwell 55 died at 7:40 a m Sunday at his Savanna home after illness starting Saturday afternoon. Born July 17 1859 in Savanna he worked for years as a Burlington railroad engineer. Survived by mother two daughters Ruth and Ramona four sons Homer Gerald Stanley adopted by Earl Andersen a brother Leon a sister Mrs Riley Douglas all of Savanna. Funeral arrangements at Fuller funeral home.
Henry Pabst of Lanark died Thursday at St. Francis hospital Freeport at 1 30 pm He was born in Germany and came to the United States at age 20 He farmed near Shannon before retiring and moving to Lanark Survived by his widow two daughters a son Emil two grandchildren four great grandchildren three sisters and three brothers Burial was in Lanark cemetery with Rev William West officiating at Trinity Lutheran Church Lanark.
Mamie Moore Eades 42 of near Milledgeville died Monday at Lena hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral at 2 p.m. today in Brick church east of Milledgeville with burial in South Elkhorn cemetery. Survived by eight children and husband Herbert Moore of Clinton, plus three sisters and three half brothers and one grandson.
Crystal Hartman spent Sunday in the Preston Downing home. Louis Decker was home for the weekend from Madison.
The Parkhill school will begin on Tuesday September 5 with Miss Laura Daemer of Chadwick as teacher. Guests Thursday included Mrs. Adeline Groharing and Mrs. Marvin Brookstra, both of Memphis Texas, visiting Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Brookstra of Davenport.
Second Lieutenant Rolland L. Mitchell, 21, was killed August 15, 1944, over Sardinia in the Mediterranean. The War Department telegram to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Mitchell of Thomson gave no death details, only that a letter would follow. Mitchell, a B-26 Marauder bomber pilot with the First Tactical Air Force, had recently arrived in the Mediterranean theater. He was born October 15, 1922, in Thomson and educated locally.
Mr Mitchell formerly ran a garage and Rolland attended Argro-Fa school then York Community high school Thomson, class of 1940. He enlisted in the air corps July 1940 and was commissioned at Ellington Field in October 1943. After serving in this country he went overseas. He was a high school classmate of Aviation Cadet Donald Ashpole, killed in a June 1943 training crash. Parents received a telegram and a letter dated the day before his death describing life at Sardinia station. Surviving are two brothers Lauren of Garden City Kansas and Lyle at home, and his grandparents Mr and Mrs Area Atherton of Thomson.

Ervin daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Ervin of Highland Park Savanna will wed Marvin L Schreiner Navy coxswain son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Schreiner Vine street Savanna at 3 pm Sunday in First Methodist Church with Rev Arthur Monkman officiating A reception will follow in the church parlors The couple will spend a week in Chicago Both graduates of Savanna township high school Schreiner a musician formerly with the Savanna ordnance depot bride to be has worked in civil service for two and a half years in purchasing
Miss Arletta Hartman was honored at a pre nuptial shower hosted by Mrs. Vernon Rawlins Mrs. Howard Nelson and Miss Blanche Seim last Friday evening. About 50 guests attended a patriotic themed shower. She will wed M Sergeant Elmer Hans this coming Friday at Ideal church with Rev. Merle Hawbecker presiding.
