Up to Monday this week 124 Carroll County men in the armed forces filed for absentee ballots for the November election. County Clerk W. M. Nipe noted the count is a small share of service members but expects more applications as time allows. Some townships are not represented yet.
Carroll county consignments led a strong Chicago Stock Yards week with cattle at $18.25 per cwt, the highest August price since 1937 and near the year’s peak. Lanark farms D Schreiner Tom Diffenderer and Ed Schneider shipped 21 1330 lb Herefords 22 1202 lb steers and 20 1257 lb cattle at the top rate. Additional Lanark lots by Fred Guenzler and Son and Ralph Manning sold at $18.00 per cwt with 1230 to 1325 lb averages.
Earl Freeman Y2. was killed in action in the southwest Pacific when his ship was struck by enemy aircraft. The Purple Heart was awarded posthumously and received by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freeman Jr. of Carroll after a Navy telegram dated February 14.
The Sandridge school will begin Tuesday September 5. The teacher is Mrs Libbie Rupple. Mr and Mrs Guy Brown and family visited in the Ray Rupple home Sunday evening. Several local residents visited others and attended the Isenhart reunion at Chadwick with 91 attendees.
The county clerk issued marriage licenses to eight couples including Robert J. Hamill and Shirley A. Weed of Lanark and Gilbert L. Shingledecker with Beverly C. Smart of Middletown Ohio. In circuit court Judge Leon Zick granted four divorces, two involving the Bily and Pulfrey families of Savanna. Numerous warranty and quitclaim deeds are recorded for properties across Mt. Carroll Savanna and surrounding townships with transfers among many residents and entities.
Community committeemen will hold meetings at several trade centers in Carroll County to collect farmer reports on conservation practices for the year. Daehler states farm program payments depend on these reports. schedules list meetings from Aug 22 to Sept 9 across towns and townships.

Smith Savanna, Charles Hopkins Savanna, Arthur Dyer Lanark, Mobbie Foley Savanna, Robert Hartman Mt Carroll, Robert Falls Thomson, and George Phillips Savanna. The roster covers multiple towns and military associations.
Mrs. John Downs 85 died Friday afternoon at her daughter Mrs. Charles Diehl’s home in Lanark. Funeral rites were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Frank Funeral Home Lanark with Rev. H. F. Richards officiating. Burial followed in Lanark cemetery. Born Harriett Elizabeth Witt May 10 1859 in Stockton she married John Downs who preceded her in death. Survived by daughter and two grandchildren.
First Lt Harold Fink son of May or William Fink of Chadwick serves in the southwest Pacific. A Chadwick High School and University of Illinois graduate, he taught algebra, later ran the Chadwick elevator with Elmer Fink. He was drafted, released under the over 28 rule, then recalled and commissioned at officer candidate school. He has been in the southwest Pacific since the summer of 1943.
Miss Kathleen Wilson died at Savannah city hospital after weeks as patient. Funeral services were held at Fuller funeral home with burial in Savannah Cemetery. Born October 10, 1918 in Prophetstown, she lived with her aunts after 1920 and graduated from Savannah High School in 1956 and Cornell College in 1940. She worked for the British War Relief Society and later at Savannah ordnance depot personnel office. Surviving are her father the Methodist pastor in Morrison, a sister Phyllis J., four brothers including Lt. Donald J. Wilson overseas, and a nephew. Mrs. Mary Edwards died at Hall Nursing Home in Chadwick after months of care. Born September 7, 1856 near Mt. Carroll, she married John G. Edwards in 1874. he died earlier. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Hart Smith, three sons Roy Alvin Merle, ten grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a sister Mrs. Conrad Lang.

Miss Shirley A Weed daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Weed of Lanark and Sgt Robert J Hamill of Lanark were married Friday at 730 pm in the Savanna Methodist church parish. Rev Arthur C Monkman officiated. The bride a Lanark native and 1959 Lanark high school graduate. Sgt Hamill returned recently from the Aleutians after 22 months overseas and has three years in the army. They left Saturday for Savannah Ga where he is stationed.
Four Lanark F F A members exhibited six purebred sheep three beef calves two dairy heifers and two purebred hogs at the Warren fair last week. Leland Zier won first place Angus calf grand champion and second place Shorthorn calf in Baby Beef. Eugene Strauch took first place Shorthorn calf in Junior Baby Beef and first place yearling Shropshire ram in open class. Thornton Zier earned third place purebred Chester White under six months open class and second place same in Junior show. Allen Salier claimed first place Brown Swiss heifer calf in Junior Dairy.

Fred Orrin Holloway 60 died 7 p m Monday Aug 21 at his Savanna home after a week long illness. He was born Oct 4 1884 in Savanna son of Fred and Mary Holloway and married Hattie Elliott July 1 1916. He worked as a clerk in Savanna groceries and as toll operator on the Savanna Sabula bridge. He was a member of St Johns Catholic church. Surviving are his widow, a sister Mrs C H Levitt and a brother Elmer Holloway both of Chicago.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Dietrick of Mt Carroll were Sunday supper guests at the Claude Grim home. The newlyweds the Lesters Grim received a good old fashioned charivari Wednesday evening at the Claude Grim home. Mr and Mrs Edson Holland and Mr and Mrs Gilbert Holland were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Frank Miller of Milledgeville.
Gravenstein Heffelfinger unite in marriage on Wednesday August 16 at Grace Evangelical church Brookville. Bride Gravenstein, daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Gravenstein of Lanark, is a Lanark native who graduated from Lanark High School in 1929. Groom Heffelfinger, son of John Heffelfinger of Milledgeville, has served in the Army nearly three years with action in the Aleutians at Kiska and Attu and recent duties at Camp Hood Texas.
Larry and Lola Grim traveled with Mrs. Viola Van Zee of Milledgeville to Chicago on business. Mrs. Delia Melendy and Mrs. Cath erine Bennett visited Mrs. Lena Stagg for Sunday dinner. LeRoy Gablin is working at Fulton during the regular operator’s vacation.
Carroll county 4-H boys and girls prepare for the annual Roundup and Farm Bureau picnic at Old Mill park in Savannah. Judging begins at 10 a.m. with livestock and home economics divisions, followed by a community picnic, singing, talks, dress revue, and a county softball game. Judges include J. G. Cash, Frank Norrish, Mr. Parkinson, and Barbara Herlin.
Pfc. Lewis Keith Kentner nineteen year old Savanna resident was killed in action in Italy on July 27. He had been reported missing prior to the notice from the War Department his mother Mrs Ray Kentner receives word Saturday. He was born in Savanna October 22 1924 and lived there most of his life. A 1942 graduate of Savanna High School he joined the army August 23 1943 at Camp Grant and later served in Africa before transferring to Italy in June His survivors include his parents a brother Raymond and grandmother Mrs Capitola Hoffman all of Savanna The father is in the Veterans Hospital at Hines Illinois.
A scrapbook page carries a war correspondent’s account of Sgt Wayne Harwood and Sgt Lego of Chadwick Mo in New Guinea. Harwood recalls jungle battles and the dangers that led to his death, while Lego, then a corporal, hopes to see his wife and fish the Mississippi.
County Treasurer Frank L. Ross warns Carroll County taxpayers that September 1 will trigger a one percent penalty on unpaid second installments of 1943 real estate taxes and an additional one percent on unpaid first installments and personal property taxes. The treasurer’s office will be open all day Saturday, August 26 for convenience.
