The Spectator writes of a large state fair closing after a strong run with top livestock, auto races shortened by rain, and Lincoln tomb visits breaking daily attendance records. It praises police courtesy while criticizing reckless driving that caused a traffic accident and delays.
Harold McCleary of near Milledgeville becomes a director to fill the vacancy created by C. J. Hepfer’s death. Carroll county gains a representative on the Production Credit board.
Fred Oslund, 48, indicted by Carroll county grand jury for obtaining money under false pretenses, was arrested in Jefferson City Iowa and extradited. He admitted guilt in circuit court and received 90 days in jail plus a $1 fine and restitution. Authorities plan additional jail time upon return to Watseka.
Ralph M. Eaton of Mt. Carroll will be the principal speaker at a Carroll County Republican central committee rally in the courthouse on Friday evening at 7 30. The newly formed Carroll chapter of Associated Willkie clubs will also meet with the central committee.
A district rural life conference will be held Thursday September 5 in the Frances Shimer Junior College auditorium Mt Carroll open to northwestern Illinois residents. The program runs 10 a m to 3 p m with talks on economic factors affecting stability church responsibility rural schooling and voluntary education and includes a closing summary by A H Rap king.
Plans for the largest single day celebration in Shannon for its Homecoming on Labor Day are completed. The parade will surpass prior years with a ferris wheel live pony rides chair-a-plane and ten free vaudeville acts. The business district will host carnival rides shows stands and concessions with three bands Shannon Forreston and Stockton and a high class orchestra for the outdoor dance.
All rural districts in Carroll county report instructors for 1940 41 with Gillespie pending official report. Pleasant Hill last to report. Several districts will not operate, directing pupils to other schools. Rural teachers meet at Mt Carroll high school for instructions and supplies.
Mount Carroll builds a colonial brick post office expected ready Oct. 1. The former Odd Fellows location becomes the new office with private postmaster suite, a large vault, staff rooms, patron service windows, 106 marble‑trimmed lock boxes, and a rear loading platform. Applications for fireman laborer and barman due Sept. 4.
Local chapters of the county sportsmen's club will release about 300 adult pheasants over the next ten days. Birds raised by the state department of conservation will be distributed locally. Each chapter must name three farmers with suitable cover willing to host releases and report to the county president at a Mt. Carroll courthouse meeting on Friday night.
Attorney Ira Silbar of Chicago released on $5,600 bond after a month in Fulton county jail on criminal syndicalism charges. Co-defendants George Gibbs Jane Curtis and Mary Wilson also released. They were arrested July 22 by Sheriff B F Cook for distributing communist party election petitions. Bonds had been $20,000 each, lowered by Circuit Judge William Barden.
Coleta residents plan a two day centennial celebration on September 13 and 14 to mark the village settlement and dedicate a new concrete highway to Route 8 8. A parade featuring floats and a Coleta historical float will lead events with horse shows bands and possible rodeo. Committees report strong fundraising and diverse entertainment with antiques display and community speakers on the agenda.
Four men were arrested in Savanna last week. Two youths, Arthur Aurand and Walter Gilbert, 16 and 15, face charges of taking watermelons from the L. V. Curley farm near Thomson with a hearing set for Sept. 3. Robert Fizer, 38, and George Green, 26, are bound over to the grand jury on larceny charges after alleged junk theft from sheds at Jefferson street. Bonds of 500 dollars each were posted and they were released pending the grand jury term.
A rural life conference is set for next Thursday in Shimer auditorium. Willkie Club and Republican Organization will hold a joint meeting Friday night in Mt. Carroll. The state conservation department will release 300 adult pheasants in Carroll county within ten days. A new Mt. Carroll post office is expected ready by October first. A local swindler was captured by the Iowa sheriff and returned to face charges and sentenced to 90 days in jail with restitution. Coleta plans a centennial celebration and highway dedication in September with a horse show and antique exhibit. Almost all county rural school teachers are hired and the county superintendent lists the staff for the upcoming school year. Thomson prepares for its 16th annual Melon Day with free melons, baseball games and entertainment for Labor Day.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Remmer leave Monday for Red Wood s Minnesota to visit a week with Mr and Mrs Mannen. Mrs Mannen and Mrs Remmer and sisters are staying at the Mannen farm in their absence.
