A strike at Kearny New Zealand shipyards ends as President Roosevelt orders navy control. The move raises questions about worker pay and future concessions while government curbs spending autos and other goods. Citizens react to wartime economic measures and social security changes.
Lawrence E Bruch Carroll county superintendent attends Springfield conference with John A Wieland to review new laws from the latest legislature. Topics include county school surveys due by October 15 and reports by Dec 31, 1942 with $750 allotted per county.
Elmer Buffington of Milledgeville sold 20 prime beeves averaging 1210 pounds at 12.60 per cwt the top price in week one. John Haug, also of Milledgeville, received 11.85 per cwt for 24 heifers averaging 926 pounds.
Sheriff Ray Westfall announced that Carlo Johnston of Mt. Carroll will become deputy sheriff on September 1. He hopes to hire a second deputy soon, following vacancies from Eber Shepherd’s resignation and a board-approved new full-time post. Johnston, 12 years city marshal of Me Carroll, will resign this week. No night rural patrol plans were disclosed.
A 25 member group of legislators and state officials inspected Mississippi Palisades State Park north of Savanna on Tuesday as part of a state parks tour. Rep. Franklin A. Stransky of Savanna joined the delegation.
J W Erdmier chairman of Carroll county farm defense board says the committee is preparing a complete report on all farm machinery and minimum 1942 needs. The ten day order covers tractors barb wire and all implements. data on current sales and numbers in use will aid plans to secure materials amid wartime shortages. A county scrap metal estimate is also requested for possible collection.
Mrs. Clara Etnyre and relatives Mr. Clyde Etnyre Mrs. John Zahn Miss Arlene Uppenberg and others were entertained at dinner Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Etnyre in Wacker.
Raymond M. Hartman of Mt. Carroll has been officially appointed postmaster and took over duties Monday morning. He succeeds Kenneth P. Wilkerson, who resigned Saturday night after serving since 1936. Hartman, a Democrat, previously worked at the Savanna Ordnance Depot and in Illinois highway maintenance. Wilkerson’s future plans are indefinite.
The Interior Department announced 1941 federal waterfowl rules establishing a 60 day duck season nationwide with a 10 duck daily bag and 20 in possession. Three buffleheads or redheads may be added to the limit, rail and gallinule season runs Sept 1 to Nov 30 in Illinois, and blue geese have a special 3 per day limit with six in possession.
Naaman Diehl of Lanark was elected president of the Carroll County Old Settlers association at the 68th annual Lanark reunion. Other officers named were Vice President Lloyd Peters, Secretary Sherman Brenaman, and Treasurer H. B. Puterbaugh, all of Lanark. A picnic and beer barbecue drew a large crowd as Ransom L. Bradley of Pecatonica delivered the day’s address. Light rain affected afternoon events but cleared by evening. Juvenile parade prizes went to Sandra Fuhremann first, Marian Crofton second, and Jackie Burkholder third.
James Merchant paid a $10 fine and costs after pleading guilty to speeding in Mt Carroll. He was arrested by Mt Carroll marshal Carlos Johnston and had a hearing before Justice of the Peace Frank Schroepel.
The National Barn Dance celebrates 17 years in radio and plans a gala tour at Melon Day in Thomson with new stars of comedy song and dance. The show blends hayloft rusticity with vaudeville flair and Saturday coast to coast broadcasts. The original 1924 WLS program began in Chicago.
Lanark resident Richard Zuck won the grand championship in the beef calves with a Short horn elf at the Lanark 4-H club roundup and livestock show. Donald Zier, Lanark, took reserve with an Angus. The event drew the area’s largest crowd and entries, prompting talk of relocating the roundup for more space.
Three new state highway police officers assigned to district one after completing training in Springfield. Officers are R. H. Gentry Lee Center G. L. Plowman Freeport and E. H. Westwick Galena. District now has nine officers plus Lieut. Wm Tehan and Sergt. Edward Mahan. staff of 16 contemplated.
County townships met Friday at the courthouse with Caryell County Taxpayers Association and Illinois Taxpayers Association representative J Herbert Eichelberger to plan a nationwide mass meeting. They will not elect officers now but organize for the September 19 meeting in Mt Carroll at 8 p m to elect officers and promote full value for tax dollars.
J W Erdmier Carroll County AAA Chairman outlines 1942 farm program aims to boost food defense and soil conservation. Changes replace total soil-depleting allotments with minimum soil-conserving goals, adjust payments, and set surplus feed and outside areas with specific acre-rate incentives and penalties. Special allotments will still govern corn wheat cotton tobacco rice potatoes and peanuts.
The Review announces Thomson s 17th Melon Day on Labor Day with all attractions ready. Free melons, two baseball games, softball, and four WLS shows headline a planned community celebration in Thomson Illinois. It notes preparations since 1923 and expects thousands to attend despite weather.
Construction of the Glengarry farm stables for Frances Shimer junior college at Mt. Carroll advances toward a Sept 15 opening for the 89th annual session. Charles A Wright arrives to run the stable. Miss Mildred Jaynes becomes equitation director. riding trails access and a campus tea mark the debut.
County Clerk Walter Watson issued licenses to Lyle Irwin and Fern L Carson of Mr Carroll and to Lyle Edwin Endress and Lucille Anna Mace of Woodbine this week.
