Babson urges families of service members to plan for postwar careers now. He notes many will return to old jobs, but a larger share lacked worthwhile positions, emphasizing opportunity exists for both big firms and small businesses, with guidance on using classified directories, avoiding politics, and seeking divine guidance.
Mr and Mrs Volk of Clinton have purchased the Ketchum Cafe in Thomson from George Ketchum and now operate the establishment. The Volks bring years in the restaurant trade, Mr Volk ran the Curtis Company cafeteria in Clinton for nine years and served as chef at Reynolds Cigar Store. They plan a special chicken dinner this Sunday and promise more specialties to come.
Mrs Edward Andring of a San Francisco shipyard reports injuries to both arms with one severe burn. Mrs John Ashpole and daughter Evelyn return home after weeks in California and Washington. Mr and Mrs Richard Badtke host this week a niece Arthera Bier of Clinton as house guest.
Renewal of basic A gasoline ration books will begin here late in August or early in September. The eight gallons per month ration remains, but each four gallon coupon is fewer in number: six coupons valued at four gallons each will cover 24 gallons quarterly. Applications require the back cover of the current book, and a mileage rationing record will be issued with each new book. Current A rations expire Sept. 21 except on the east coast.
The Whiteside County Fair at Morrison runs August 29 30 31 and September 1 marking the 74th annual exhibition. Officers anticipate strong exhibits and large attendance with livestock entries closing August 19 and other entries a week later. A full horse racing program including 2-year old trot and pace events plus riding shows and a horse show on September 1 are planned. Frank P. Norrish and Dr. A E Harding handle entries for the horse events and Ross Bealer runs the midway concessions with many stands and games expected.
Carroll County farmer Charles Cheeseman and his sons Keith and Duane run 300 acres. He produced 80 tons of pork, 25 tons of beef, 50 600 pounds of milk, 300 chickens and 700 bushels of seed vats last year. He will receive a War Bond, pennant, pin, scroll and radio notice Saturday.
Rural one room schools in Carroll county declined to 68 last year, five fewer than the prior year, due to teacher shortages. Pupil enrollment rose slightly to 1044 countywide, with city elementary enrollment at 1348 and high schools steady at 924. The district employed 194 teachers, most in rural and high schools, and issued numerous certificates to teachers. State recognition certificates went to 34 one room and two two room schools. Graduation totaled 206 with 260 promoted from eighth grade. Libraries number 103 with 1276 books. school assets include sites and equipment valued in the hundreds of thousands for rural, city, and high schools. Tax levies in 1943 totaled 360,834 for education and 53,885 for building funds.
Herman Daehler, Carroll county AAA chair, announces a Thursday meeting to finish plans for the 1944 farm program. Committeemen will handle reporting forms, and payments will follow on individual operator reports. Harvest seed samples for clover and alfalfa will be graded at the Springfield seed lab, with payments contingent on test results.
Clifton H Taylor of Jewell Iowa spent the weekend as a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Whitney.
Mrs Dart Fogel of Milledgeville dies of heart attack at home aged 55. Funeral at Milledgeville Brethren Church with burial at Bethel. Born May 9 1892 daughter of Wilson and Anna Miller, married Dart Fogel Feb 22 1914. Survived by husband two sons Richard and Frank a daughter Gweneth Mathis a brother Horace Miller and a granddaughter. Mrs Jerry Schamel of Mt Carroll dies after long illness aged 85. Born 1859 in Mt Carroll married Jerry Schamel 1877. Member of Church of God and Royal Neighbor lodge. Survived by three sons Erve Roy Clyde a daughter Mrs Henry Raish two sisters and other relatives.
John P. Reddington 80 a Shannon native died early Saturday at St. Josephs Home for the Aged Freeport Funeral services were held Monday at St Vincents Catholic church Freeport with Rev R L Kennedy officiating burial followed at Calvary cemetery He born November 5 1863 in Shannon son of John and Catherine Reddington Surviving is a niece Mrs Leslie Krauthoff of Freeport
Mrs. John Rohenkohl, 65, longtime Savanna resident, died Saturday in a Dubuque hospital after major surgery last week. Funeral services were held Monday at 4 p.m. at Fuller funeral home in Savanna with Rev. George I. Goris officiating. burial followed in Savanna cemetery. Surviving are two sisters Mrs. H. A. Kranert of Savanna and Mrs. Millie Kranert of McGregor, Ia., and three brothers Charles Young of Dubuque, John Young of Washington, D. C., and George Young of Anoka, Minnesota. Her husband died two years ago.
Frank Monty, 76, died at 6 40 p m Tuesday at his Savanna home after a three year illness. Born July 21 1868 in Lintonville, he was long employed by the Milwaukee railroad. Surviving are son John at home and daughter Mrs Robert Spencer of Thomson. another daughter Mary Kathleen died June 29 1930. Funeral arrangements are being completed at Fuller funeral home.
Marion RB Wires 56 died at 8 a m Sunday in Savanna city hospital after several months illness. Funeral Tuesday 2 p m Fuller funeral home Savanna with Rev H Foster Whitney officiating. Burial in Savanna cemetery. Born March 30 1888 in Washington township Carroll county son of Sam and Charlotte McIntyre. Survived by mother three sisters Miss Anne Wires Mrs Tyne L Smith Mrs John Albrecht Hanover two brothers Frank Wires Savanna William Wires Bartlett. Preceded by father Feb 1 1936 and sister Mrs Ray Westfall.
Twin sons were born to Mr and Mrs Melvin Stadel of San Bernardino California at 4 p m on Tuesday August 8. The mother Dorothy Lane is a former Miss Lane and relatives Mrs Clyde Lane and Mrs Royal Smith traveled from Savanna to San Bernardino to be with the family.
Preparations for the annual Pari Bureau piente and 4-If Roundup on Friday August 25 at Old Mill Park Savanna near completion. Judges include Frank Norrish beef division WG Cash dairy division and Mr Parkson swine and sheep divisions with Miss Barbara Herlin Whiteside County home adviser serving as judge in the girls division. Judging begins at 10 a.m. and is to finish shortly after noon before the afternoon program featuring talks on transportation war materials and food production. A railway executive an army officer and a local farmer are expected to speak. A style show and musical numbers are planned for the afternoon.
Edward Allen Hamilton, AMMM, 3-C, 17, Navy, killed July 31 in an aircraft crash and buried on a Pacific island. Parents Mr. and Mrs. Luther Lewis Hamilton of Mt. Carroll report the death by Navy telegram dated Aug. 9. Survived by two sisters Mia and Dorothy Schreiner, WAVES, and Barbara Bernice at home. Hamilton attended Carrol County rural schools and Mt. Carroll high school. served nearly two years.
Pvt Mahlon E Keil 19 of Savanna a radio mechanic school student at Traux Field Madison Wis was fatally wounded Friday morning by a military guard after failing to halt Investigators said his widow Mrs Alice Hatfield the four months old daughter Sonya and parents Alfred and Myra Keil of Savanna survive with a brother Alfred Keil One infant brother died in infancy The field officials ordered an investigation and word reached his wife and parents by 5 p m Friday
Roy Stairs sues Loren Albers in circuit court alleging a July 15 assault with a clawhammer on Stairs at the Albers farm near Milledgeville. Stairs seeks $10,000 in damages, claiming malice and a premeditated aim to kill. The suit names attorney Lawrence A. Smith of Savanna.
Harry Appel of Carroll County led the opening trade at Chicago stockyards with 52 head averaging 1156 pounds selling at 17.00 per cwt. Two loads from Carroll County topped trade at 18.00 per cwt. Fred Guengler and Dr. Schreiner of Lanark and a 21 head steer drive from Roth and Sturtevant near Lanark sold around 17.05 per cwt to an eastern packer bidder.
Waterfowl hunting will span 80 days this fall and winter, ten days longer than last year, with a general 10 duck daily limit and a five duck extra allowance for mallards widgeons and pintails. A total bag of 15 ducks is possible if five or more of those species are taken in a day. The season includes regional dates across midwestern states and a temporary measure to aid farmers. A separate order will liberalize civilian ammunition limits.
Pfe. Keith Kentner, 19, Savanna, has been missing in action in Italy since July 27. Last letter dated July 25 asked parents to check reports of July 19 action in Livorno. Kentner, a Savanna High School graduate class of 1942, entered service in 1943 and went overseas in April, after time in North Africa.
Most high schools and city elementary schools in Carroll county will start the 1944-1945 term on Tuesday September 5. About half of rural schools will open September 4 or 5 while the rest begin August 23. In Thomson both grade and high schools open August 28.
Mr and Mrs William Hans woke to joy Monday as their son M Sgt Elmer Hans phoned from a California base to say he had arrived. He has served since July 10 1940 and spent 20 months in India, sending home gifts including table sets a cloth a billfold and ivory ornaments prized by the family.
Heavy thundershowers Tuesday night broke a weeklong heat wave in the region and brought some relief to farms. While no great rainfall, the showers aided cornfields and pastures, easing stress from near 100 degree days, with further showers continuing into Wednesday morning.
About 35 members of 4-H live rock clubs took a stock judging tour Monday across three Carroll county farms. At Kenneth Schneider’s farm they judged three rings of purebred swine. Blaine McCinty’s place featured two rings of Shorthorn cattle and two rings of Oxford sheep. Clarence Van Buskirk’s farm offered a complete herd of Hereford show cattle for judging, highlighting a profitable and enjoyable day.
Final report from Atty. Robert L. Morris shows Carroll County reached 125.8 percent of its E bond quota and 127.1 percent of the quota for sales to individuals in the fifth war loan drive. The county ranked 5th in E bonds and 18th in individual sales, with Ogle, Lee, Whiteside, Jo Daviess, Stephenson, and Winnebago placing in various positions.
Col Paul G Armstrong state director of selective service announces he declined to become executive secretary and chief of Veterans Employment under the GI Bill in Washington. He thanks Brig Gen Frank T Hines but says family time and health considerations require he stay in Illinois to see the large local draft operation through to completion.
