Babson reports a sharp break in Gloucester boat prices for fish led by red fish, noting postwar price cycles for cod and other commodities. He warns wholesale buyers to watch whether cattle and cotton follow fish downward, while remaining bullish on select stocks.
At least five Carroll county rural schools have not secured teachers for the new year. L. E. Bruch the county school superintendent reports that a few instructors are still needed in some city schools. Rural schools begin the new year on Sept 2 or Sept 3. A few open Aug 26. City schools wait until after Labor Day.
The first poliomyelitis case in Savanna this year was confirmed by spinal puncture last week. Ten year old Donald Simmons, son of Mrs. Melvin Cook, Chestnut Park, was examined by Dr. Ruth Church of the district health office and reassured the public there is no cause for alarm. He will remain at home unless his condition worsens.
The 76th Whiteside County Fair starts Tuesday in Morrison, running four days August 27 28 29 and 30. Officers report a busy setup with new improvements, $20000 in premiums and a full four days of rides shows and a stock parade.
Claude S. Collins 50 a California tourist died about 8 a m Tuesday at the Savanna tourist home of Mr and Mrs Lavie Logan where he and his wife spent the night He died of a heart attack per county coroner Dr J B Schreiter They were en route from Detroit to Martinez California Mrs Collins awakened to his heavy breathing and he died minutes later He is survived by his widow his mother and two half brothers Mrs Tillie V Turney is recovering at McCleary hospital in Excelsior Springs Missouri expected to stay two or three weeks.
Heavy rain and a severe electrical storm struck the area early Saturday, delivering over three inches of rainfall. A second storm hit Sunday morning with strong winds but short duration. Lightning sparked at least three farm fires north and west of Morrison, while Dr. H. Holmes faced major loss as a cement block wall collapsed in a bungalow under construction on Main Street Chadwick. Electric service was interrupted for hours when a transmission pole fell, then briefly again during the morning.

Mrs Helen Bentley of Denver and General P McElin of Denver were wed Aug 15 at Savanna in a home ceremony. Lorene Johns and John Bruening Jr tied, and Dorothy Shelly and Heil Marsh married in Savanna with attendants present.

Barbara Herlin of Amboy will judge. grouping system used. exhibits must be in by 10 am. cash prizes awarded across classes including dresses, dairy foods, records, handbooks, darning and patching with 25 cent/style show payoffs for models and foods.
Atty. Charles F. Kinney, son of Mt. Carroll residents, opens a law office in the Kinney building and moves with his wife and two sons to the county seat. He has been claims supervisor for the Illinois Agricultural Mutual Insurance in Chicago and Springfield and was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1941.
Hertha M. Smith of Savanna was appointed chairman of the Carroll County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. She succeeds Mrs. G. H. Colling Wool of Savanna who organized the chapter in 1941 and led three years. Mrs. Leo Heiley served two years. a fund drive is planned in Carroll County.
The Peoria OPA says 32 northern Illinois boards collected 48777.55 in 857 administrator claims against violators over 22 months from October 1944 to July 1946. Nine months saw 15585.64 returned to 576 overcharged customers. settlements to the U S Treasury. County figures follow.
The county board approved lists of judges of registration and deputy registrars for October 8. The names include Washington Wm. J. Gibbons, Sa vanna Arthur D. Haas, Mt. Carroll Ward R. Fritz, Lanark Vinnie Bruner, and many others across Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Polo, Chadwick, Milledgeville, and surrounding townships.

Obituary notices from Lanark and surrounding areas list Frank Harman about 75 of Lanark died Aug. 21. He leaves two daughters and three sons. Elizabeth Sprecher, 70, formerly of Lanark, dies in Macon home for the aged. Reinhold Miller, 80, dies near Chadwick. Mrs. William Ritenour, 39, of Milledgeville dies at Home Hospital Sterling. Funeral services and burial for the deceased are announced for several area residents with ties to Lanark, Chadwick, and Savanna.

Fire crews from six communities battled a weekend blaze in Mt Carroll gutting two buildings in the county seat business district. The Ritenour building and Bricker drug store were largely destroyed with losses up to 100000. Firefighters battled flames for hours while deterring spread to adjacent structures.
