Shannon Mother and Son Die in Freeport Area Collision

Mrs. George W. Thiele 52 of Shannon and her son Galen 30 died Friday after their 1946 Packard collided with James Hubbard’s car on the Pearl City Freeport road. The crash occurred as Hubbard turned into the Van Dyke farm driveway near Freeport. Hubbard suffered minor injuries. an inquest was postponed due to his condition. Funeral services for the Thiele family were held in Freeport with burial at Lena.

Flower Show Classes Announced by Merry Circle Club

The Merry Circle Club lists classes for its Flower Show at the Community House on Sept. 13. All may compete in divisions including potted plants, bouquets, and junior entries for children under 15 with table and mixed flower displays.

Price Control Board Nearly Loses Home in County Halls

Carroll county's price control board faced eviction after a supervisor moved to force vacating its quarters in the county annex within 60 days. The motion failed six to eight as backers warned the transfer of functions could push local business to travel farther and increase correspondence. The measure followed approval of a separate motion to deny an occupancy grant OPA sought for next year.

Legion Plans to Purchase Resuscitator in Carroll County

Carroll County American Legion sponsors a magazine subscription drive to fund an army type resuscitator. Oliver Emnyre of Chadwick, newly elected commander, says the campaign starts now and runs about three weeks. Bonded volunteers will cover rural and urban areas with signed letters and sheriff’s office registration to place the device at the sheriff’s office for 24 hour access. A previous drive raised funds for a fracture bed and left a small balance for community service projects.

War Brides at Homemakers Institute Fair

Mrs. Arthur Eckert of Mt. Carroll represents Carroll county at the Homemakers Institute for war brides in Springfield this week. The program opened last Friday with classes, demonstrations, dress reviews, trips, and tours and includes other fair events. Friday guests will visit the governor’s mansion. Mrs. Bickert is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Carson of Woodland township.

Bridge Aid to Wysox and 4-H Club Funds Approved

Carroll county supervisors approved county aid to Wysox township for a bridge and appointed Supervisors Carroll Reddington and Crouse to act on the proposal. The board also appropriated 500 from the general fund for Carroll county 4-H club agricultural projects.

Standard Oil Wins County Approval for 662 Mile Pipeline

The Carroll county board of supervisors granted permission for Standard Oil Company of Indiana to install a 10 to 8 inch pipeline beneath roads in Shannon and Cherry Grove townships. The line from Whiting, Indiana to Moorhead, Minnesota will pass near Joliet to Dubuque and cross northern Illinois in a straight path. The project, costing around 17 million dollars with over 100 thousand for buildings, requires highway officials be consulted to avoid future road use conflicts and possible route changes.

Coach Line Earns ICC Certification for Illinois Routes

Fox Valley Coach Lines, Inc. received a certificate of convenience and necessity from the Illinois Commerce Commission last Thursday to operate as a motor carrier of persons. The certificate covers travel between West Dundee, Hampshire, Oregon, Mt. Morris, Brookville, Lanark, Mt. Carroll, Savanna and Fulton with restrictions on edge routes Lanark to Savanna and Savanna to Fulton.

Savanna fabricator Savanna Fabricators Inc buys four acre parcel from Helle Bros in Chestnut Park to build a plant for housing material. Ivan Shaver of the Chamber of Commerce says an industrial area will form nearby. Water main will service the site and Helle Bros sawmill rebuilt after last spring’s fire. County approves funds for Chadwick to Route 78 project

The county board adopted resolutions to improve the Chadwick west to Route 78 road with a gravel or crushed rock Type A surface. An appropriation of about $40,000 will match federal funds, with work not expected to start before July 1, 1947. A new survey and right of way acquisitions are needed to meet federal and state highway specs, delaying completion likely beyond a year.

Duck hunting season cut to 45 days in 1946

Secretary Krug announced a 45 day duck hunting season for 1946 with a 24 bird daily bag limit and 1 24 possession limit. Hours run from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour before sunset. Geese limits set at two of any kind plus two additional. No Canada geese season in Illinois Iowa and other Mississippi flyway states. Post season possession remains 90 days. Open season for mourning dove runs Sept 1 30 in Illinois.

Shannon Youth Hurt In Fall Near Mt Carroll Farm

Dick Stevens 18 of Shannon suffered two crushed vertebrae near the base of the skull after falling from a ladder about 50 feet while aiding his father shingling a corn crib on the Haven Noser farm northeast of Mt Carroll. Taken by ambulance to Freeport hospital, he regained consciousness within a few hours.
