The Merry Circle club will sponsor its first Flower Show at the Mt Carroll Community House on Friday Sept 15 with no admission. Col Ray W Ireland of Chicago named organization chair man of the Air Force Association for Illinois by Lt Gen James H Doolittle. He will form a state committee to invite former Army Air Forces personnel to organize a state wing and local squadrons. The association aims to preserve fellowship, maintain recognition, educate the public on air power, and has over three million potential members. Two Injured In Collision Near Lanark Early Sunday

Elmer Bickert 23 of Chadwick and Ralph Steger 34 of Lanark were treated at Deaconess hospital Freeport after a collision about 1 15 am on a highway east of Lanark. Both men suffered broken noses and other injuries. police investigated the crash.

Bar Pierces Rail Worker Thigh Near Milledgeville

Charles Johnson, a Burlington railroad worker from Galena, had his inner thigh pierced by a heavy steel bar while riding on a motor car near the Milledgeville crossing. The bar passed through the thigh without breaking bone or damaging major vessels. He was treated by Dr. A A Calkins in Chadwick and later sent to Freeport hospital. recovery depends on infection.

Veterans Pensions Rise 20 Percent in October

The October pension checks for World War I and II veterans and their dependents will rise by 20 percent, with automatic changes and no extra filing. Burial allowances increase from 100 to 150 dollars, and widows gain full payment for their minor children. Deadline set for beef and dairy payments in Carroll county

Farmers and feeders must file applications for beef sheep and lamb and dairy production payments by August 31 per Carroll county AAA chair J W Erdmier. Those who sold eligible animals or products should appear at the county AAA office to avoid forfeiture. County Legion Officers Listed Amid Installations

O H Etnyre of Chadwick county commander of Carroll County Council announces that appointive officers will be named at next month's meeting after the executive committee meets. Newly installed: senior vice commander Kenneth Tuck, sergeant at arms Ward Frederick, chaplain Rev Earl Cobl, adjutant L A Frank, service officer Vincent Sullivan, finance officer R M Hartman. Charles Reece of Savanna, junior commander, was absent and will be installed later. Installing officers were District Commander Walder and District Adjutant Mason of Dixon. Lanark Old Settlers Day Draws Big Thursday Crowd

A large crowd joined Lanark’s first Old Settlers Day since the war, starting with a parade led by Rex Willis. Bands from Lanark and Shannon performed, with decorated floats and horse entries. Awards went to Docner, Nesemeier, and Willis in horse divisions, Mac's Store and Fuhremann Canning Co. among top floats, and Lanark Creamery and Bowers Cafe among noted cars. Ralph Eaton spoke in the park, and officers for next year were elected: President John Buche, Vice President Bud Schreiner, Secretary S R Breneman, Treasurer Brice Puterbaugh.

Hartman Clan Reunion Held in Savanna Park

The eleventh Hartman family reunion was held Sunday at Old Mill park in Savanna with 102 in attendance. Oldest attendee was John Tripp of Chadwick, youngest Dennis Howard Kinnyre, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Etnyre of Chadwick. Officers elected for 1947 include President Mrs Eugene Miller Vice President Miss Naomi Kisseller Secretary Mrs George Doden and Treasurer Mrs Charles Geisz.

Melon days are thriving along highway 80 near Thomson where stands sell watermelons and muskmelons. Despite dry conditions this summer, growers say fruit is sweet and plentiful with strong motorist sales on Sundays and steady through the week.

Frederick Getz Named Mt Carroll Highway Commissioner

Frederick Getz, a Mt. Carroll farmer, was named highway commissioner of Mt. Carroll township on August 21 replacing resigning Charles Neuschwanger. He will serve until the next spring election for a four year term. Marion Ewart was appointed assistant to the commissioner. Mr and Mrs Fred Hartman visited Mr and Mrs Harry Allen in Sterling on Sunday.

Lanark 4-H Youths Win Five Championships at Round-Up

Lanark youths sweep county round-up with five championships announced August 27. Gov Dwight Green authorized raising Illinois maximum old age assistance from 45 to 50 dollars monthly starting October 1 and urged a review of cases for further increases. He cited a new federal provision allowing half the pension costs up to 50 dollars monthly to be covered by federal funds.

Five Rural Schools In Carroll County Lacking Teachers

Five rural districts in Carroll County still had no teachers Tuesday per county superintendent L. E. Bruch. Oak Grove Walnut Grove and Clifton in Washington township, Jefferson in Pair Haven, and Cloverdale in Cherry Grove faced possible consolidation or pupil transfer. Some schools may not operate if teachers cannot be hired in a few days, though Oak Grove and Walnut Grove expect high attendance making such plans unlikely. The district consolidations reduced total rural schools, but teacher shortages remain a serious annual issue.

OPA Sues Savanna Auto Dealer Overcharges

The OPA district office announced eight suit filings for the week Aug 16 23 seeking damages totaling 42275 34. One case charges Roman H Kluck of Savanna operating Savanna Motor Sales and Kluck Motor Sales with retail overcharge sales of used cars between Nov 14 1945 and May 31 1946 and failure to issue warranty certificates. Overcharges total 2556 63 and the complaint asks 7669 89 or three times the overcharge amount.

Set Clocks Back Sept 1 In Most Area Communities

Sunday Sept 1 ends daylight saving time in several area cities. Clinton Savanna residents will switch to standard time at 2 a.m. Sept 1. Mt Carroll and Thomson merchants who observed daylight saving time also revert. Savanna ordnance depot remains on fast time until Oct 1.
