Judicial Convention Set for Oct 14 in Freeport

Republican leaders in the Fifteenth district named October 14 as the date for the district convention to nominate a candidate for the vacant circuit judge post. The event will be at Stephenson county courthouse in Freeport with delegates elected by county committees. one delegate per 500 votes cast for governor last election. Harry L. Heer of Galena is the first Republican candidate. other possible contenders include Charles E. Stewart, Ralph M. Eaton, Robert L. Gracken, and A. Dick. The Democratic convention date is not yet set. a special election to fill the vacancy will be held December 7, with local judges to be chosen in Lee and Stephenson counties.

High School District Tax Levies Rise in Most Carroll Units

Carroll county districts file new tax levies for 1938 showing increases in five of seven districts mainly to fund staff and educational equipment. Thomson and Milledgeville keep last year totals. Totals cover educational and building funds: Chadwick 10000, Thomson 8000, Lanark 14000, Milledgeville 18000, Mt Carroll 30750, Savanna 98500, Shannon 9500.

Car overturns on Route 78. occupants escape with minor injuries

Five persons narrowly escaped serious injury when their car overturned on Route 78 near the Ernest Miller home on Friday morning. The Woods family from Mr. Carroll were aboard. Mrs Woods braked on a hill causing a wheel to rock and the vehicle to overturn, leaving the passengers with minor cuts and bruises.

New School Laws Passed By Assembly

A survey of Illinois 60th General Assembly actions shows several public school laws now in force. Law 448 requires boards to buy and use state mined coal within ten percent of other states’ costs. Law 486 governs school transfer approvals with a county superintendent issuing a convenience certificate after board approval. Armistice Day is added to statutory school holidays. Law 597 requires drivers to stop for school buses loading or unloading passengers. Minor changes to school director elections await state superintendent rulings.

Mt Carroll Man Jailed on Tire Theft Charge

Emery Bowden of Mt Carroll was arrested Sunday on larceny charges and bound over to the grand jury under a $2000 bond after a hearing before Justice Frank Lchroeppel. He allegedly removed four tires from a truck owned by Jack Smith of Janesville Wisconsin on August 9 while the Smith truck was on the Smith property in Mt Carroll. Bowden is detained in the county jail pending grand jury action or bond.

Build Up Shoulders on Highways Deepen Ditches in Vicinity

State highway crews have worked for days along Route 40 east of Route 78 near Mt Carroll deepening roadside ditches filled with silt from fields and building up shoulders. Last week they operated on Route 52 between Mt Carroll and Lanark as they repair washout damage from early summer rains.

Chicago Resident Dies Of Injuries In Route 80 Car Upset

Chicago resident Edward Bailey, 40, died at Savanna hospital from chest injuries after a Route 80 car upset Sunday noon. His companions Albert Jones and Ernest Walker, both of Chicago, were injured but alive. a coroner ruled accidental death. The car skidded into loose sand after a tire blew near the Black House, and neighbors aided the victims to Savanna for treatment.

Beth Hower leads Carroll county bands to Chicago festival

Miss Beth D Hower of Lanark directs a Carroll county group among 2500 musicians from five states in the Chicagoland Music Festival at Soldiers Field Chicago. The Sunday Tribune notes 28 visiting bands with Hower bringing 90 players plus 200 county supporters. Some bands from nearby counties also participate.

History Professor Burke Leaves Shimer for Ball State Post

Lanark Hires Morrison Native Louis Daehler for History Posts

Louis Daehler of Morrison will teach history and social science in Lanark, filling a grade faculty position under Robert Royer. A Chadwick native, he has resided in Morrison two years, graduated from Illinois in 1935, and earned a B A in social science while working through college. He will be one of three departmental teachers for 6th 7th and 8th grades, sharing a room with Lil Nan Clemmer.

WPA road projects halted in Carroll county

One hundred two men employed on Carroll county WPA road construction projects were discharged following Washington orders. A county supervisors delegation met WPA officials in Rockford and was informed that all WPA work in counties with fewer than 150 workers will be halted.

Corn Crop Seen Slightly Below Normal Across Northern Illinois

A state-wide report shows Illinois corn conditions on Aug 1 at 91 percent in Carroll County and 30 percent in Whiteside, with counties like DeKalb at 95 and Jo Daviess at 80. Husking Contest Planned in Bureau County Illinois

The planned 1937 state corn husking contest will be held near LaMoille in Bureau County with champion Adam Byczynski of the area likely to host and defend his title. Plans set by the Bureau County Farm Bureau call for a September 1 site selection and a November big match, contingent on the national contest date to be announced later in the fall. The event will feature top county huskers plus Byczynski and other Bureau County champions in a fast, competitive state meet with hopes for a strong Illinois turnout.

Five top cows in Carroll County DHIA July standings

William Werner leads the Carroll County DHIA July with 1141 lbs milk and 44.7 fat. Stransdale No 1, Edwin Keim, J L Winters and Werner’s herd place next with 972, 866, 917 and 789 lbs milk respectively and fat ranging from 60.5 to 71.0. Thirteen herds totaling 200 cows rest, forty cows exceeded 40 lbs butterfat, three were unprofitable and two cows dry.
