Special election voters in Freedom and Woodland townships go to the polls on Tuesday August 17 to decide bonding for road work. Woodland plans funding with WPA money for road projects and road improvements. Freedom voters will determine whether to build four bridges in their township.
Chailwick's sixth annual Cheese day drew large crowds under sunny skies. Prize money topped 130 dollars, and 10,000 Cheese Sandwiches plus coffee were served efficiently. Acts from Chicago featured fancy re ting, acrobatics, and music, with a boxing exhibition drawing attendees from Mt. Carroll CCC camp. Ferris wheel, games, and dancing kept families entertained through the day.
Rural teachers of Carroll County gather for an all day meeting at Mt. Carroll grade school on Saturday August 28. Lawrence E Brich superintendent will speak and lead planning for the year and supply distribution. Most rural schools start fall term Monday August 30.
A new 110 foot long turntable, part of an 000 program, was installed at the Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific railroad roundhouse in Savanna. The upgrade, driven by larger locomotives, replaces the old structure, with two wrecking cranes and one steel erection crane used in the removal and installation.
Raiph M. Eaton of Mt Carroll and former state's attorney is urged by friends to seek the Republican nomination for circuit judge. A vacancy on the fifth circuit bench will be filled at an election on December 7. Eaton says he has not given the matter serious thought but friends believe he would accept if chosen by district Republicans.
Lanark’s Old Settlers Day celebration on August 14 progresses favorably with a parade at 7 pm, a 2:30 pm program at the park band stand, free coffee, and a loud speaker system. The lineup includes E Knapp invocation, Hazel Hawk vocal, attorney Robert Morris welcome, Ralph Eaton response, Rev. G T Ronk sermon, Savanna band selections, and a 3 pm game between Chadwick Tigers and Carroll County Farm Bureau. Five free acts, a four city band directed by Beth Hower, and officials and committee chairs are announced for parade, juvenile parade, solicitation, amusements, advertising, program, concessions, decoration, park, and cook tent.
Milwaukee Savanna round house workers reach 65 under railway retirement act. Several engineers and firemen from various depots also retire, marking a broad implementation of the act across railroad ranks.
Mt Carroll Homecoming plans under Mt Carroll jubilees club leadership promise a major celebration. WLS radio stars Chuck and Ray Christine Pokey Martin Red Foley Eva and Girls of the Golden West appear August 25 with a parade, midway concessions over 34 vendors, rides including Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, and a Thursday parade at 1 o clock following the dinner hour.

Carroll county school superintendent Lawrence Be Bruch received a warrant for 880.09 from the 1930 state distributive fund. The payment represents 16 percent of Carroll county’s 1930 balance, per Edward J. Barrett, Auditor of Public Accounts.

A county school of instruction begins Monday August 16 for farm reporters involved in the 1937 Agricultural Conservation Program. One reporter per township will assess land use, under the supervision of the county performance supervisor Euer Ejisfeller. All Masons and families in northern Illinois invited to first all Masonic picnic Saturday Aug. 14 at Andrews Grove eleven miles northwest of Rockford on Route 70 Trask Bridge Road. Eight lodges of the Northern Illinois Masonic Forum sponsor the event with baseball games contests and special entertainment planned.
The Carroll county Board of Supervisors met Tuesday with Chairman Carson and Mr Johnson absent. The day’s main action was naming five nominees for county welfare superintendent to oversee county old age pension. Nominees include Miss Schaut, Mt Carroll. Florence Marks, Shannon. W S Todd, Milledgeville. W R Kauck, Savannah. and W McGrath, Mt Carroll. They have until September 1 to file and must pass a state exam before final selection by the board. Salary is fixed at $100 monthly for counties under 25,000 population.
