Thomson notes Sunday visitors to the Noordhoff family in Lanark including Mrs Cornelius Noordhoff and daughters Judy and Linda. Baptist church interior brightened by a fresh papering and a singing group from the Witt family. Various calls and dinners noted with Morrison, Sterling, Argola, Freeport and Chicago connections. Nancy MacLean visits her grandmother Dora Doty in town and marks a birthday.
Carroll county 4-H officials announce premium lists and rules for the girls division of the annual Roundup at Old Mill Park Savanna on August 25. Exhibits due by 10 am with judging starting at 10:15. Each entrant must have garment and 4-H record book approved by local leader. Style show in afternoon with 25 cent payments for all modeling dresses and food product exhibitors. Classes cover school dresses, better dresses, slips, grains and foods projects, secretary records, handbooks, darning and patching with varied premiums.
Premium lists and instructions released for the annual 4-H Roundup livestock show on August 25. Local officials urge early trucking, hogs ringed before arrival, and note division heads for beef cattle dairy swine sheep and garden display with specific premium amounts for each class and breed.
Miss Vernetta Beck of Savanna returned from a week in Rockford at Mrs Thom as A Sheridan’s home. A Sunday bluffs picnic honored James Smith of Wacker who leaves soon for service. Attendees included Mrs Weston Smith of Wacker, Mr and Mrs Willis Stage and Vernon, Mr and Mrs Lyle Williams and Carol, and Mr and Mrs Leonard Stage. James is brother to Mrs Leonard Stage and Mrs Lyle Williams.
Carroll county again reports zero traffic fatalities in July keeping its yearly record clean. Whiteside shows no July deaths though four fatalities occurred earlier this year. Jo Daviess and Ogle counties each report two July deaths, Jo Daviess’s first this year and Ogle rising to seven for year. Stephenson and Lee counties log no July fatalities.
Military funeral services were held Friday at Fuller funeral home Savanna for Glen E Wheeler 53 who drowned August 1 in the Mississippi River near Savanna. Rev H F Whitney officiated with Van Bibber Hansen Post American Legion in charge. burial followed in Savanna cemetery. Wheeler a World War I veteran had lived in Savanna two years and was son of Fred E and Mina Wheeler born January 19 1881 in Mona Iowa with education in Waterloo. A cousin Miss Helen E Neipert of Waterloo survives.
Carroll county AAA chairman Herman Daehler promotes permanent grass waterways to control erosion and protect soil. He notes payments of 75 cents per 1000 square feet under the program and explains eligibility for landlords tenants operators and sharecroppers. Deadline notices and equipment permits are released by the county rationing committee.
Preston Prairie Crystal Hartman attended with Mr and Mrs Preston Downing and Mr and Mrs Loomer Downing at the Lambert reunion held Sunday at Old Mill Park in Savannah. The Arthur Anderson family also spent Sunday at the Ward Weidman home.
H Tallman dairy herd led with 19 Holsteins and Guernseys, averaging 44.5 fat and 1 078 milk in July. Porter and son followed with 39.8 fat and 1003 milk, then Tousley brothers with 28.2 fat and 891 milk. Buford brothers 56.8 fat and 1105 milk, Reusch and son 35.5 fat and 745 milk. High cow Anna belle yielded 79.8 fat and 2217 milk. 17 cows over 55 fat, 109 over 40 fat. association average 28.9 fat and 750 milk.
Thom son area melon growers welcomed the change in the OPA ceiling from 26 to 35 dollars a ton after July 5 as the crop begins to come in. A few patches were raided over the weekend causing damage to melons and vines, with trespassers risking lead exposure in the fields.
A 4-H fat stock judging school will be conducted in Carroll county next Monday Aug. 14, according to Farm Adviser M. P. Roske. Instruction in judging will be given by H. G. Russell of the University of Illinois. The school starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Kenneth Schneider farm or Farm Bureau office in Mt. Carroll. Bring a lunch. the Farm Bureau will furnish pop or milk. A contest will be held at one farm with instructions in judging swine, beef cattle and sheep.
State Auditor Arthur C. Leuder issued a permit to organize a new state bank at Erie. Local interests are assured of sufficient capital and will proceed with formal legal requirements to organize the institution.
Mrs Eleanor Lewis entertained the Methodist church Junior Sunday School class Saturday evening. Attendees included Jean Dietz Marie Dixon Arla St Ores Georgia St Ores Bob Heusinkveld and Jennie Stearns. Mrs Ward Weber of Chadwick caught a 19 inch crappie while fishing Sunday. The Chas McGinty family drove to Rockford Sunday visiting their son F McGinty and family Jackie McGinty stayed with grandparents in Thomson. Vernon McGinty visited Thomson House.
Miss Katie Adame 60 of Mt. Carroll dies in Lochester Minnesota hospital after four weeks as a deputy clerk and creamery secretary. Orville Allen 49 of Milledgeville dies after long illness. services held at First Brethren church and burial in South Elkhorn.
Ellery Sisler 78 died at home in Mt. Carroll on Aug 3 with funeral Aug 5 after burial at Oak Hill. Ruth Rohrer 80, longtime Mt. Carroll resident, died Aug 5 with funeral Aug 7 at the Fi lery Sisler residence. Both obituaries list surviving relatives and church affiliations.
An item corrected a prior misnaming in a damage suit, stating Elver Richter was the correct defendant instead of Elver Eisfeller. The county clerk issued marriage licenses to James J. Lee and Louise M Shu felt of South Norwalk, Carl O Leesmith and Theodora Mahan, William Jeffrey and Nancy Moe, August H Behling Jr and Betty Jane Wagner. Sunday guests were Dale Maydew and Ronnie Clinton visiting the Oakleys, with Harold Maydew returning home.
An August 3 Saturday Evening Post ad from Glenn L. Martin depicts a Martin Marauder bomber named Mammy Yocum credited with sinking five Japanese warships in the Aleutian theater. The plane is associated with Captain William Rhodes of Mount Carroll who reportedly flies Mammy Yocum II with the 9th Air Force in England and recently earned the Silver Oak Leaf Cluster.
State Auditor Arthur C. Leuder reports July old age pension payments totaled 3,035,875, down from June. Aid to dependent children payments reached 690,283, down 12,000 from June. In Carroll and Whiteside counties pensions were 284 recipients for 8,286 and 747 recipients for 22,239 respectively. ADC payments listed Carroll 47 dependents for 625 and Whiteside 174 dependents for 2,317.

Miss Irene Heinze daughter of Sterling residents married Melvin Hubbard son of Rock Falls at eight o clock Sunday in the West Jordan Lutheran parsonage. Rev P C Boysen officiated. Attendants Vera Hubbard and Robert Heinze. Reception for 35 guests followed in the Heinze home. The couple will reside in Rock Falls.
Carroll county voters not yet registered under the Illinois permanent registration act may have their names added to the list this fall without visiting the county clerk. A registration day is set for Oct. 10 with one judge and two deputy registrars at each precinct from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The board approved pay for registration workers and named registrars for each precinct including Washington, Woodland, Freedom, Cherry Grove, Slannen, Lima, Rock Creek, Salem, Mt. Carroll, Savanna areas, York, Fair Haven, Wysox, Elkhorn Grove and more with listed officials.
Carroll county ranks fifth in the state for the E quota of Fifth War Loan bond sales as of Aug 2 processed by the Federal Reserve. The county total sales reach 1,177,979 with E bonds at 570,961 and individual sales at 1,031,027. final figures expected soon, announced by County Chairman Robert L. Morris of Lanark.
Paul Palmer of Savanna was appointed a justice of the peace in Savanna township to fill a vacancy at the county board meeting. Savanna, with five justices entitled, currently has two. The board also approved a tax delinquency property resolution and supported a constitutional amendment to allow county treasurers and sheriffs to succeed themselves in office.
Mr and Mrs Warren Grey of Maine visited Mr and Mrs Harold Atherton and Jim Smith of Lanark stayed with Mr and Mrs Leonard Stage. He is Stage’s nephew. Mrs Charles Beck and Janibel of Savanna joined Mr and Mrs Lyle Williams for Saturday night. Mrs Chas McGinty returned to Thomson from a week with her brother John Serneff at his Clear Lake cottage, Iowa, accompanied by her sister Mrs Alice Fitch of Clinton, Iowa.
