Gloucester Mass August 2 I have just been appraising the 1946 domestic crop lookout and am amazed at America’s continued good fortune. Barring unfavorable weather aggregate production may exceed the 1942 banner year with a near record wheat and corn crop. Fruit prospects are generally favorable with apples peaches pears grapes and citrus likely to set records or exceed normal. Vegetables show a larger total pack though some items may lag behind last year. Consumers should stock canned vegetables as insurance against shocks.

Death of Mt. Carroll businessman George D. H. Paul at 75
George D. H. Paul a Mt. Carroll lifelong resident and hardware store operator died after a heart attack while sitting in his car in the Mt. Carroll business district. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2:30 p m at the Frank funeral chapel with burial in Oak Hill cemetery. He was born July 13 1871 and survived by his widow Bertha two sisters and a daughter.

State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports July aid to dependent children payments at 1,486,047, down 6,122 from June, and July old age pensions at 4,247,091, up from the prior month. In Carroll county 38 children received 1,031 and 283 pensioners 8,592. Whiteside county 201 children 4,853 and 740 pensioners 25,197.

Mrs. E. Booth Dies at Savanna After Stroke
Mrs. Edward L. Booth 88 longtime Savanna resident died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday after a paralytic stroke last Thursday. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Savanna with burial in Whitechurch cemetery near Albany. Survived by husband Harley, a son and a daughter, 17 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and other relatives. Two sons and several siblings preceded her.

Illinois State Fair Opens Friday for Ten Days
The first Illinois state fair since 1941 begins Friday for a 10 day run at the 836 acre grounds north of Springfield. More than a million people are expected to attend the event featuring 77 rebuilt buildings and $285,782 in premiums the largest in state fair history. Admission is free first three days, then 30 cents August 12 to 18 with extra charges for grandstand races and shows.

Local World War II Discharges Include Weber and Genkinger
Discharged naval serviceman Sir Henry T. Weber, son of Joseph Weber of Chadwick, left the Great Lakes separation center July 31 and returned to Chadwick. Private Marion Genkinger was discharged from the army last week and is currently staying in Rock Falls.

Local Dairy Feed Payment Announced by Carroll AAA
J. W. Erdmier, Carroll County AAA chairman, urges timely April May and June Dairy Feed Payment filings. Rates include 6c per cwt for milk in April, 45c for May and June, and 17c butterfat per lb in April and 15c in May June. Applications accepted through August. Farmers advised to seed alfalfa alsike and red clover to avert next year seed shortages, with 7c per lb for alfalfa and alsike and 9c per lb for red clover sold in 1946.
