Illinois Attorney General John E Cassidy warns of widespread dishonesty in downstate relief administration and urges a prompt thorough probe by the state's attorney in each county to uncover fraud. He cites wastage and possible criminal misappropriation of public funds amid a national security context.
Mr and Mrs Ben Stadel return home Sunday after a week with Mrs Margaret Springstead in Central Lake Michigan. Mr and Mrs John Temple of Benton Wisconsin accompanied them and remained for a longer visit.
In July there were 16 herds on test totaling 298 cows with 53 producing over 40 lbs butterfat and 36 dry. Lee Morgan led with 1171 lbs milk and 43.6 lbs fat from 15 mixed cows. Porters Brown Swiss herd second at 1030 lbs milk and 38.7 lbs fat. Keim Brown Swiss third at 828 lbs milk and 32.5 lbs fat. Stransdale Farm No 1 Holstein cow at 1817 lbs milk and 76.3 lbs fat was high for the month. A marriage license was issued to Keith S Krause and Phyllis I Buche.
The 11th Chicagoland Music Festival, sponsored by The Chicago Tribune Charities, Inc., will be held Saturday August 17 at Soldiers Field Chicago. About 8 000 participants from 30 states and Canada are expected along with 1 million prior attendees. The program will be aired on WGN and Mutual. A luncheon Friday August 16 in the Stevens Hotel will feature Mrs Edward MacDowell. Contests include vocalists violinists cornetists piano accordionists choruses bands baton twirlers and flag swinging teams with hundreds of winners. Staff and organizers include Philip Maxwell Henry Weber Dr Edgar Nelson Capt Howard Stube Fred Miller Mrs Edmund J Tyler and Miss Bessie Vydra Beth Hower will direct only two bands this year.
An annual reunion of Carthage College alumni and prospective students is set for Thursday at 6 30 p m The gathering will take place at Pines State Park near Mt Morris with Mrs Vincent Olson of Lanark listed as secretary of the group.
Chestnut Park grade school announces two faculty changes. Herbert Rawlins Thomson resumes as principal, succeeding Roland Wirt. Miss Louise Weidman will replace her sister Miss Elnora Weidman who resigns to marry Arthur Fetterolf of Mt. Morris. Elnora, previously of the first and second grades, will leave for the Preston Prairie district. Other staff include Miss Dorothy Metz and Miss Dorothy Shoemaker.
Judge Harry Wheat last Wednesday granted a divorce to Gayle Murphy from James R. Murphy. Both residents of Savannah.
Seven sign-up meetings in the county are scheduled for August 16 through August 20 to determine eligibility for corn and wheat parity payments under the 1940 AAA program. Meetings begin at 1 PM in Chadwick Lanark Savanna Milledgeville Mt Carroll Argo and Shannon with about 1,250 eligible farms and 130 eligible for wheat parity.
Judge Harry Wheat of Freeport ruled in Jo Daviess county circuit court at Galena that Albert F. Green of Hanover properly commenced a $10 000 damage suit against R R Bonn of Detroit Michigan over the death of Green's son William 10 after an auto crash last year The defense argued improper procedure against a non resident of Illinois Green is represented by F J Stransky of Savanna and Chicago
County superintendent Lawrence Bruch announced that most city and rural schools will start the 1940-41 term on September 3. Twelve rural schools begin August 26 and sixteen on Labor Day September 2. several districts did not report opening dates.
The Republican county central committee met Friday evening in the Mt. Carroll courthouse with county chairman Harry S. Lowman presiding. They discussed fall campaign plans and organized groups of veterans, young Republicans, and committeewomen, appointing officers. An Associated Willkie club is forming, with contact persons in Savannah and Mt. Carroll. The first club meeting and officer election will be held August 19 at 7:30 PM.
The Sterling Tennis Club defeated Savanna five matches to two on Sunday. Doubles saw Hendricks Frye beat Medine Clark 6 4 and 6 3 while Hussey Ferguson beat Wenger Robinson 7 5 and 6 4. Sterling won four of five singles led by Hungate over Ferguson 4 6 6 3 8 3 and Frye over Medcine 5 7 6 2 6 1. Savanna's only singles win came from Hussey over Robinson 2 6 6 4 6 2.
In northern Illinois a series of items are reported including dairy testing results showing sixteen dairy herds with July tests averaging 26.1 pounds of butterfat. Additional notes mention new recruiting stations, construction contracts, and civic events across the region.
Bill Traum of station WROK Rockford announces a coast to coast Mutual broadcast each Saturday at 9 15 p m central time. The show features an orchestra from the Lake Lawn hotel in Delavan Wisconsin and originates from WROK. About 75 or more Mutual stations carry the program with 150 in the network, though not all due to time differences and local commitments.
The 67th Carroll County Old Settlers Reunion at Lanark includes a morning old settlers gathering in the park with a beef barbecue coffee and cream. A 1 p.m. meeting features Rev. E Y Knapp presiding with prayers by Rev. Harry Kaye and songs by Hazel Hawk. Addresses by Rev T Stuart Cleworth and band selections follow. Evening events include juvenile parade amateur contests and concerts by the Lanark Band with a dance at the Masonic Temple.
Due to rising enlistments three new army recruiting stations are authorized at Freeport DeKalb and Woodstock. The Rockford recruiting officer announced the plan increasing district offices to eight with existing stations at Rockford Dixon Aurora Joliet and Kankakee.
Births in July total 18 with four girls and 14 boys plus two June births and 22 past-year birth certificates filed. Deaths total 20 in July with a list of names and burial places, including several Savanna and Lanark interments.
Lanark residents prepare for Carroll county old settlers reunion featuring free beef barbecue for about five thousand, gifts for parade entries, amateur contests with cash prizes, band concerts, a city park program led by Rev. E Y Knapp and speaker Rev T Stewart Cleworth of Savanna, plus a street dance and various concessions. Officers C H Dimon presides, H B Putterbaugh treasurer, S R Brenaman secretary.
Secretary Ickes announced a 60 day duck season this year, up from 45 days, for the intermediate zone including Illinois and neighboring states, with Oct 16 to Dec 14 dates and a sunrise start. Northern zone runs Oct 1 to Nov 29. goose bag limit stays at three. jacksnipe allowed sunrise to sunset.
Earl Rowland assists Howard Petty with farm work. Mrs Fawer of Freeport stays with her sister Mrs Harry Fulrath over the weekend. Mrs Vernon Weber is ill. Harriett Hammond travels to Yellowstone Park for vacation.
