A column notes Congress fights over a conscription bill with no near vote and considers political fallout. It cites a CIO view, a Kansas pedestrian story, Dallas civil service film cut, droughts south of the state, Willkie’s farm stance, and hints of German secret weapons amid the looming blitzkrieg against Britain.
Edward Bently Winston was accepted by the Navy for a four month training course to become an officer. Mac Kreuder has enlisted in the air service at San Antonio, Texas. John Mirosh has gone to Glendale, California to enter the Curtiss Wright aviation school.
County Supt. Lawrence E. Bruch reports steady enrollment drop across elementary and secondary schools for 1939 40 with 187 fewer students than the prior year. High school enrollment fell 16 from the year before and total graduates decreased to 202 from 210.
The Carrol County Legion held a Monday night meeting in Savanna with Ernest Fry presiding. A list of committee chairmen was announced including Ralph Eaton and others assigned to Americanism service officer and various county roles across Savanna Lanark Chadwick Milledgeville Thomson and Mt Carroll.
The Gilbert Brown farm home four miles north of Rockford in Winnebago county is named a regional winner among nine eligible for the state finals of the 1940 Illinois farm floral contest. Northwestern region judges selected the winning farm from ten counties. The county winner competes for the Gov. Henry Horner plaque and $226 in cash prizes at the Illinois state fair in Springfield August 17 to 25.
The Agriculture Department announces a two year renewal option for 1938 and 1939 corn loans in the commercial area, at 67 cents per bushel with 10 cents storage, or one year at 62 cents with 5 cents storage. Redeeming options include full settlement or redemption at 58 and 57 cents plus interest. In the non commercial zone renewal for 1939 corn at 43 cents applies. A Mt. Carroll Democratic rally is planned in 13th district with monthly chairmen council meetings.
Four Carroll county girls won honors in demonstration work at the 4 H Achievement day. Winners in the dress revue and food demonstration will represent Carroll at the state fair later this month. Representing in dress revue are Lavonne Holm and June Coonerwell. Food demonstration reps are Jean Hammond and Ruth Wolf, while Grace Keeney and Marie Johns were sewing demonstration winners. Alternate Katherine Olsen and others may accompany. About 140 attended in Mt Carroll as 91 girls took part. Marie Sympson judged. lemonade was served by the Farm Bureau.
A new petit jury panel, drawn by Circuit Clerk John R. Gelwicks, will report in circuit court at Mt. Carroll on Sept. 4. The panel was drawn after the first panel’s time limit expired. Members include John Geisz, Don Harris, Lavonne Sucher, Fair Haven, Don Carpenter, Ed Andring, Marjorie Stage, York, Melville McKean, C. C. Chaffee, Wyson, Beulah Nickel, Carl Lehr, Lola Linderman, A. K. Madsen, E. J. Nickel, Hazel Heinze, Savanna, Dorothy Dauphin, Woodlawn, Emaline Keefer, Freedom, William Fox, Kenneth Lessman, Cherry Grove, Harrison Barnes, Mabel Alexander, Lois Fisher, Shannon, Aug. Carroll.
A Palissippi 4-H club team from Savanna won the county fat stock judging title at the Saturday elimination, earning a place in the state contest. Rex Doty led with 270.7 points, followed by John Miller and Albert Grinnell. Mt. Carroll and Milledgeville placed second and third.
Two boys escape injury when a pickup truck upturned on a gravel road near Mt Carroll. The car was demolished but the boys were unhurt. County 4-H events feature winners advancing to state level and local honors in fat stock judging and 4-H contests. Officials announce committees and duties for the coming year and county records note highway fatalities remain absent in early 1940.
A shipment of 36000 bushels of corn, property of the Commodity Credit corporation, was moved from the Savanna grain elevator. Twenty freight cars carried the corn to the Continental Grain company in Chicago to fulfill a large foreign contract.
Premiums for livestock exhibits at the Carroll county roundup at Lanark on August 29 were released by Farm Adviser M. P. Roske. Entry limits per member mirror last year with up to three entries in a division and two per class. Animals must be in place by 10 a.m. judging starts at 10:15. Judges will rate single entries as if in competition. Divisions cover Beef, Dairy, Swine, and Sheep with detailed premiums by breed and class, plus breed association prizes. Supervisors include W. G. Warnock, Rev T. S. Cleworth, R. E. Schelling, Mick Stengel, John Rosenberg, Maurice Guenzler, Robert Cambman, Paul Doty, and Joe Rath.
Lanark prepares for the 67th Old Settlers Reunion on August 15 with a new barbecue, two amateur contests offering cash prizes of 10, 5, 3 and 1 dollars each. Entries must be in by August 13. The program includes a park ceremony, Rev. Knapp as MC, address by Rev. Cleworth, Lanark band concert, junior parade, and Hazel Hawk's "The Shout of Liberty" before the second amateur contest and evening concert.
Kenneth and Lawrence Woessner of Shannon were chosen as Carroll county representatives to attend the Boy's State Fair School at Springfield during the state fair from August 17 to 23. Selection was made by local education and civic leaders. The program trains youths to study the state fair's agricultural and educational exhibits, with each attendee required to publish a report. The best country and city boy reports win a gold medal and $10.
A marriage license was issued in Clinton Iowa to Oren Nash of Milledgeville and Margerie Crowley of Antioch.
