Harvard police ambush starling control at night and threaten other measures. Reports on bootlegging shifts to Canada, larger 1942 shoe sizes for soldiers, and a rise in leather demand. Carroll county’s August quota for the selective service is eight men. Induction will take place in Chicago on August 25, with draftees drawn from the 1 A list registered last fall. July 1 registrants face delays due to late questionnaires, affecting notice and classification. Next quota likely to rely on new 21-year old registrants. The Carroll County Taxpayers group postponed officer selection after a Mt Carroll meeting. The nominating committee decided to appoint one representative from each of fourteen townships as directors. Directors will meet the nominating committee on Friday August 22 at the courthouse in Mt Carroll to decide officers.
Carroll County AAA committee authorized sale of unneeded empty steel bins not purchased in 1940. Bins priced at 7 cents per bushel of rated capacity and limited to farmers for on farm grain storage. New procedure expands sale from 944 to 1640 bushel bins to boost on farm storage and parity loan benefits.
Construction of an earth dike extending about 20 feet upstream from the landwall of Lock 13 on the Illinois shore of the Mississippi River south of Thomson will protect southbound barges. The dike aims to prevent barges from going aground or entering shallow water during westerly winds. Preliminary work occurred last winter to prepare Pool 13 by lowering water levels and clearing stumps.
Mount Carroll high school announces the hiring of John H. Lusk as athletic coach to succeed James Long. Lusk, a Monmouth College alumnus and freshman coach there, will also teach physical education and social science and coach football basketball and track.
Premium lists detail livestock divisions dairy beef swine and sheep with blue red and white ribbons and cash awards. Livestock judging uses grouping in dairy and beef classes. girls Exhibits include a 2:45 pm style show with 25 cent modeling pay.
The Carroll county board approved Lehreiner bridge repairs in Fair Haven township and granted county aid for the project. Sheriff Ray Westfall is authorized to hire an extra deputy starting Sept 1 1941 as state legislation expands sheriff fees. An advisory board for public welfare was formed with R C Carson Ward Fritz and the chairman naming Sterling Carpenter received blind benefit.
Carroll County Clerk Walter Watson reports nineteen businesses registered up to Tuesday, a small fraction of expected registrations under a new state law due by August 17. Watson declines to interpret the law, stating his role is to file registrations and collect the two dollar fee. Some registrants seek opinions on compliance, while others register promptly or challenge the matter, leaving final decisions to individual business owners.
Mrs. H F Whitney of Savanna supervised knitting that was sent to Red Cross headquarters last week from Lanark Mt Carroll Thomson and Savanna. Miss Mabel C Greve county Red Cross chairman praised the work as a real credit to the county.
Frank J. Stransky, former judge of the Circuit Court in the 15th Judicial Circuit, says he will allow his name to be submitted to the Republican Supreme Court Judicial Convention in spring 1942. A Savanna native and longtime Carroll County State's Attorney, he is widely known across northern Illinois for his strong record and public service.
Merit examinations for positions in public welfare departments across downstate counties will establish registers for County Superintendent Case Worker Supervisor Senior Visitor Junior Visitor Senior Stenographer Clerk Junior Stenographer Clerk and Junior Typist. About 400 county jobs in smaller counties will be filled from top eligibles with applications due by August 26, 1941.
The Frances Shimer Summer Theater closes its season Friday August 15 with Streets of New York a 19th century melodrama. Lawrence Carra directs urging applause for the hero and a kiss for the villain as a Wall Street villain deposits cash before a bank fail.
The Anker L. Christie a 1200 horsepower towboat built in Wisconsin will pass Savanna northbound from St Louis to Minneapolis in the coming days. Commanded by Capt George L Vinson the 108 foot vessel carries 1334000 gallons of gasoline. It uses electric levers to steer from the pilot house which can drop 5.5 feet to clear bridges. Its first tow has two barges totaling 500 feet. Three 400 horsepower diesels drive three propellers and speed is five to six miles per hour over 125 to 150 miles daily. The crew is 12 with electric fans showers and a library. Owned by a major refiner the Christie will operate on the Mississippi Illinois and Tennessee rivers.
Joseph Runyan, 28, operator of a Savanna tavern, was wounded Friday afternoon when a .45 caliber revolver discharged while he moved it between drawers. The bullet shattered the bone in his left thigh and he was taken to Savanna hospital for treatment.
A Monday afternoon storm ended a heat wave with a hard rain and gusty wind. Trees toppled across routes near Mt Carroll Chadwick and Lanark reported heavy rain, while Morrison saw little rain and the next day brought cooler air.
Officials of the Carroll County Old Settlers association and Lanark committees prepare for the Gth Old Settlers Reunion in Lanark next Thursday Aug 21. A big barbecue picnic lunch at noon will precede an afternoon program with a speaker, music, juvenile parade with prizes, band concerts, and free acts. Concessions and rides line Main Street and a preevent evening program is planned. Officers include President Lloyd Peters and Secretary S R Brenaman.

Leighton Philips, Will Krower, Robert Schaut and Clyde Morgan Jr. were Tuesday guests at Cedar Creek. Howard Petty and his wife visited O'Neal Garland’s Turkey Farm on Sunday. A group of relatives shared Sunday dinner at Carl Metz’s home in Walnut.
